I was pretty excited by the trailer at the prospect of civilizations developing all the way to modern times. I'm really hoping that once you have a decent tribe built and are pretty self-reliant, that we could see tribes interacting with one another at some point. I think it would be really interesting if we could make flags and slowly unite into countries. I like to imagine that shops will pop up eventually, when places start turning into towns. Currency could become a trade commodity and lead to the birth of nobility classes. It would be really interesting to be able to get together as a town and elect someone king or chief, see them raise armies, send messenger parties to other civilizations, and etc. What sort of crazy big ideas do you guys have for the game as it develops?

Well, I really like the idea that each food group like meat, veggies, and fruits take different rates to burn off your food bar.

Overall, I am just worried the game will get too easy with even more food bar to fill. If towns are already dying out from boredom it seems like it'd exacerbate the issue. I feel like if anything, there should just be simple needs like vitamins. You don't eat fruit for a long time, you get scurvy. You don't eat meat for a long time, you get fat-starved. Babies wouldn't have to worry about it since they're breastfeeding.

I was thinking about this a lot and I have an idea.

Let's say that the food bar is color coded. You eat a veggie, you gain green food bars, you eat meat, red food bars, you eat berries, you get blue. Each food group could then take different rates to burn off. Fruit would used for energy first, being the least filling food. Veggies could be medium, and meat gives you fat, which would take the longest to burn off. This seems not super-crazy to implement, forces people to eat varied diets, and also simulates things like being fat-starved if you're only eating berries to survive.

Also, then later more complicated foods like sushi could provide more portions and add more food bars. Maybe some things like sushi even give you x amount of fat and x amount of veggie bars, adding a lot of variety in how we feed ourselves.

What do you guys think?

I think the problem is that 1 second is literally over a week in this game. One pie literally takes weeks, maybe even months to prepare. I think it would fit the game more if we skipped a lot of food preparation and focused on food preservation like pickling and smoking/salting. If you were trying to roleplay which meal to eat to keep it interesting, I mean you're only eating like 2 meals a month so it just seems like an awkward marriage of ideas. I think food is too much of a focus, it should be relatively easy for even a decent sized tribe to survive off just hunting and gathering. The real struggle of this time period was horses, the people that learned to ride horses and shoot off them were the most dominant throughout history. Some of the Steppe peoples were terrifying nearly until modern history.

Maybe food should be less scarce in the formative years of a tribe. Humans were actually pretty adept at the hunter-gatherer craft, it's when you begin populating an area and farming that people become dependent on those food sources and famines can become a real threat. I think maybe just add more berry bushes and wild food sources, maybe even make berry clusters similar to a vine of grapes, so you could carry more in baskets, let us focus on beating the elements and wildlife like wolves and save more of the famine-related problems for once we've began populating an area.

Basically: Earliest generations gather food.

Next phase: Hunting becomes more common and necessary

Final phase: Farming (and food preservation techniques) becomes necessary for stable food supply.

I would just like to say I am against the idea of a grace period. I like the difficulty, I enjoy a game that doesn't pull its punches. You die near food sometimes, sure, but a month in game time is equal to 5 seconds of real life time. In real life 3 weeks without food and you are dead. When you look at it that way, the game is actually pretty flexible with how long you can go without actually eating. I think people just need to learn to respect the food bar. Play smart, don't leave newborns alone, watch your babies and children until they're able to take care of themselves, remember to not let crafting/etc distract you from eating, take appropriate supplies on trips.

I don't understand it either. I like the challenge of raising all my kids, for better or worse. If you're a woman you might have 3-4 kids at once and then you're really limited in what you can do. Why would you not want some people who can go search and gather resources without worrying about babysitting? I'd rather have 1 or 2 solid daughters who can continue the lineage and like 8 men who can focus on getting shit done. One or two solid rabbit hunters will crank out a ton of clothes, which is a great leg up for settlement's children.

You know, I think this really highlights a significant flaw in gameplay. Even if you don't have a bow, humans have fists and fingernails. The likelihood someone can stab an entire town to death in real life is pretty slim. I can see getting away with a few murders, but you'd have to be sneaky. I think what we need is a melee attack, maybe negligible damage so people aren't trying to beat everyone to death.. but not totally defenseless. Maybe weapon use cooldown? I'm not super familiar with the mechanics, I've never tried to kill anyone.

I don't know how else you'd stop that trend without broader controls, like maybe not being able to attack people in your own family tree, so if you're killing it's got to be a rival tribe out on the range. It would be interesting to see that coupled with maybe like a flag system that you could use to conquer areas or allow other tribes to join your colony. Seeing diplomacy and tribal bow&arrow wars play out would be pretty cool, anyway.
