I think you missed my point Catfive. I was talking about tools that are reusable and you are short on like the first shovel or something. Also, only noobs use a thread to make a backpack in a town with sheep I don't understand how you came to assume I would steal key resources that are hard to make for trivial things from the initial point I was making.
Also note, most of time if I have to borrow a tool that we are limited on, I will say "brb" and bring it back less than a minute later instead of wasting a minute to explain. Also, if I need the tool for something it is 100% for something that is in dire need like compost or building pen in the case of shovel. If I have to borrow for a while for trivial things I will either make an extra one since it's trivial or ask to borrow for a while if it's not currently needed for anything important.
Also, you have guys also have a weird approach on "projects". Most of them those are usually trivial like buildings or aesthetic and if they are not, I'd rather not call them projects but rather call them tech-development like the water pump which is now important and key to town's survival and I agree that sometimes when things are going bad and you need the resources to save the town, you can't afford to have someone else take it for something trivial but since not everyone is good at spotting what's urgent... Some resources are bound to be grabbed by people not noticing it to make something else. But it's still wrong to just kill them... at the very least they deserve a calm explanation before you kill them. And hell, if they knew what they were doing and just stole it for their own sake you sure have my blessing to kill them.
Lastly, I always respect everyone in town. There are many hard workers in the farms that don't get recognize enough. And again, this game is great because of the many steps of things so even if you decide to make a tool or plant something for a "project" there are still people who made the compost, fed the sheep, maintained the farms, made the tools, got the iron and so on so in a way everyone is always taking from others to make something and who knows at that point with so many steps but that's the beauty of the game.
Anyone mentioned how much iron you need for the new oil machinery? It takes quite a lot and usually requires 2 or 3 generations to build. Also, to my knowledge, most of the civilizations are doomed by lack of girls rng or people not maintaining the sheep/compost so once the pies start to run out and the berry bushes dry because of no soil, it is doomed unless a good player is in town and notice in time the dire need for compost and hopefully not all carrots have been eaten by that point! The best fix to iron if any should be made would be on the veins. I feel like it gives too many so .5x or .75x would be the best approach. The loose iron is always hard to find for eve camp for first tools even with mod it's very hard to get the first 6-9 iron without going out for 5 years+ just to bring 3.
Sometimes you can't let new people just do what they want. I've on multiple occasions had them being destructive either in an attempt to help or just plain ignorance like I can't let someone go around cutting the kindling trees in the bakery and I certainly can't let them start chopping all the junipers.
My fix to that is to get people to maintain the main fire better in more advanced civs and bring more firewood next to it.
But to get back at the main issue here, treat the new players like babies. You wouldn't go and kill your children would you? Bad buildings, bad farming design, bad roads, bad kiln placements, bad house placement, wood floor on desert, bad/weird pen design and the list goes on. I usually don't mind them too much, they are trying to learn the game and have fun. When I see them doing something that can be extremely harmful for the town (last seeds!) I give them recommendation or more information on why or how to do things.
Of course having someone trying to build a bad pen in early civ can be harmful but that's usually when they are trying their best to help the town and letting them know how important it is that you complete it fast (fast > quality for early civ.) and as long as it's functional, who cares? Just fix it in another life if you or someone else who wants to improve it when the civ can afford designers and builders.
Also, it's such a blast to finally be able to build a house or something higher tech after several lives of struggle, you can't really be bothered by design/placement/temperature. Anyway, civs dies... most of the fun is rp'ing and working with others to build something in high tech towns. Had a huge blast this weekend working with people making oil pumps in any mid-high tech towns I found. It's a long process so having people working together for it was fun even tough few were noobs they were willing to help and learn.
I have to say though, I've seen many rude/very-selfish people lately that are ready to kill you as soon as you borrow the only shovel in town (that they think they own) to go dig a rock or grab poop just to bring it back less than a minute later and have them still be mad about it. In a town, nobody owns anything.
Hey there!
I strongly recommend that you spend as much time as possible playing without the mod until you are frustrated or getting bored. Let me explain further.
What was fun at first was the difficulty of the game at the native fov, the threats of the wild animals, the gathering and the food. It really feels like a survival game and all especially as eve, it is so difficult to set foot in ground and die of age. I spent over 150h with default fov and it was a great time until...
Until you get killed several times by sneaky sneks behind trees, sniping boars that travel max range right onto you WHILE you have a very high tech item for your town like a cart or horse just to lose it full of resources or something... the most frustrating thing ever. I don't mind dying like that when it's fair and all and after so much time at default fov I, dide have mastered the avoiding wild animals tactics but those can still happen. When it's because of the situations mentionned before it's hard to not be tempted by mod... so after quite a few death by that (hard to put a number but let's say 20+) I was facing 2 decisions, quitting for a long time or trying out the mod since I've already seen and master the tech tree.
But again, the base game is still great and challenging but once you hit a point where you wanna quit or feel like you've seen all, the mod can be nice to use. It helps you figure out how/where to build stuff and helps you develop high-tech, spot murderers or griefers like you mentioned, makes it easier to chat or work around and I also think the game looks better at 1.5x.
As for the griefers, a smart one will be annoying and hard to catch with or without mod. With or without the mod, the pvp is pretty much the same, the hardest part of the pvp is usally the lag while chasing someone, it's hard to stab them unless they have the murderer slowdown since they have to stop moving to be stab most of the time. Best way to counter those is usually set up a bunch of meds and have people trainned for it as most grieffers are more focused on killing. Also, finding the things that got broken and fixing those asap is a great skill to master. For example: broken pen, bowls filled with crap, resources depleted without leaving seeds behind, etc... It also discourage them to keep doing it if you keep repairing the pen or other things and you might catch his name and spread the word. A town with a name in the aim is hard to grief and will get them cursed and sent to donkey town (hopefully).
Don't worry too much, I love dealing with grieffers that think they are smart but give them retribution on their first mistake. Have several douzens of dead grieffers on my record that I've sent to rot in hell. Also, I know that there are more good people using the mod than those with bad intentions.
Keep in mind there are some "laggers" out there I never miss a knife kill on a slowed person but it somehow happened yesterday. Once he was done with the slow mo he teleported several tiles further so I knew it was a lag issue. Just had to chase him afterward with my full belly as adult while his little small child's belly would run out eventually and I could stab him even though he kept moving around. That's the most efficient way to kill, wait for them to try to do an action (good clothing helps hunting them too).
Hey y'all I'm the griefer-killer. I was the lady who killed him and I knew it from the start pretty much that he was trying to grief town but there was so little I could do to go against it. At first I tried to take over the smith by force making tools but I could tell he was determined to make more knives since he made a second hammer as soon as I took it away for a minute. (didn't take file because that would have been easy grief call against me) After the third knife he made and laying on the ground around the town I knew something had to be done at some point but the town was in dire need of farming so I had to focus on that for a little bit. I also took all the knives laying around and put em into a box closed just to see him grab em and lay on ground again. Then the murder happened and I was done with it. I grabbed one of the knives and starred at the forge for a minute. As soon as I saw him make another blade blank I looked at him said "okay" then stabbed him. Then was standing still explaining that he made like 10 knives to grief town but a lady jumped on the avenge train and stabbed me immediately. Stood still continuing to explain and whishing them luck. I got cursed few times? idk. It didn't matter because I did good and I barely ever get cursed so I didn't and wouldn't end up in donkey town. After reading this though, killers are fine it spices things up but low profile griefers that I spot everyday are the worst, especially after reading his motives.
On a side note, be careful "avengers" too many griefer-killers are killed on the spot. Most of those are usually standing still ready to explain their motives while murderers will try to go into hiding or avoid getting killed. Also, keep in mind that you have a quite a bit of time to kill them before they can do anything again.
First eve from the triple bell town on server 2. Stay sharp my children.
I was born in that town when the goose altar started, with no knowledge of the cow thing from before which is kind of a shame that it got supressed. At first it was all fun and all, there was a priest praising the goose and just rp'ing which was fine and people would be raised just knowing about the goose. It was just a lot of fun and silly because of the bugged goose. But then griefers and fun-killer started showing up trying to break the altar and murdering the priest or people around the goose which was really annoying since the goose religion was a free religion with no such thing as sacrifice or anything and the only heretics were the people trying to grief it, not the ones who didn't want anything to do with it. The kill chain you mention was mostly those griefers or the ''avengers'' getting killed while I would heal any innocent caught into that silly mess (I am the lady on horse and wool making more meds because of those said griefer).
