You guys think this would be good but it's not. Instead of playing people will spectate, and that means less players in game.

Put a limit on it. I'd say 5 or 10 minutes tops.

I searched for 'Rat Race' and found another song.  It might just fit better:

"Trapped in this town where the sun never shines
In a train underground we're lost in the tunnel of time
Day after day at the sound of the gun we fight for positions
Elbow to elbow we run

Our names and our numbers are scrolled in our backs
Don't ever look down man you'll fall through the cracks

Spinning our wheels in this rat race
Shifting gears they go round and round
You know how it feels at this fast pace
Run for your life you can never slow down

I'm down on my luck I'm falling behind
I was beating the clock but I've run out of, run out of time
I'm weak in the knees, my heart's gonna fail
First man to the future, or last man left dead on the trail

There's sweat in my eyes, and blood on my hands
It's run for your life man, as fast as you can

Spinning our wheels in this rat race
Shifting gears they go round and round
You know how it feels at this fast pace
Run for your life you can never slow down

The whole world is turning at break your neck speed
Can't get what you want man, you get get what you need

Run, rat run
Run, rat run (go)
Run, rat run

Spinning our wheels in this rat race
Shifting gears they go round and round
You know how it feels at this fast pace
Run for your life you can never slow down "

Rat race!
I'm singing that:
When the cat's away,
The mice will play.
Political violence fill ya city, ye-ah!
Don't involve Rasta in your say say.
Rasta don't work for no C.I.A.
Rat race, rat race, rat race! Rat race, I'm saying:
When you think is peace and safety.
A sudden destruction.
Collective security for surety, ye-ah!

Sorry, I love that song haha.

Why do you want watering cans? How would they improve the game?

I mean filling a can with water to bring around instead of running individual bowls would be nice. If you have a small garden in reality, that watering pale is your good friend, because it saves you time and effort. The holes in it actually spread the water so it doesn't pool into pockets that can cause mold if you just pour water unevenly.

Huh. I got basically the same run down today from someone else, so I guess it's a spot to look at for sure. The exodus across this country recently is pretty damn mind boggling. I'm sure no matter where you end up, there will be other families who are also recent transplants as well.

God damn J, I'm sorry you guys have been held hostage like this. I hope you find a new home soon.

Curious, why New Hampshire? Family?

I bought the game on steam, and just checked my email associated with my steam account. Anytime I get logged out here I have to go to my email and type in "onehouronelife" and its the last email. Also my password given is a random assortment of letters and numbers. Like BDY7SX7HDY.

So I don't think the hardness is scaring people off.  And having only 4 wand slots isn't what makes it hard, anyway....  There are other reasons why OHOL isn't a "sticky game" that keeps lots of people playing and playing, the main one being that your play experience is interrupted every hour.  The end of a each life is a great "stopping point," and the startup cost for the next life is high, and the duration of the next life is known (a whole hour?).  So there's no tendency to say, "It's late, but I'll just play one more quick game."  In Noita, that tendency is there in spades, and "one more quick game" often lasts 30 or 40 minutes if you end up having a good run.... and then you look at the clock, yikes!  OHOL never tricks you in that way.

Definitely agree for the most part.

There's always outliers like morti and bluecram, who tend to play in a large streak at a time, but most of my time playing (and I'd imagine most others) is spent on one or two lives a day.

I've always called this game a great pallet cleanser.

It's the kind of game where after playing 5 straight hours of a survival shooter, you can unwind with a life in OHOL. I did that with this game for over a year straight.

So I'd say its still a sticky game, its just a different kind of sticky. Long haul slow burn potential sticky.

Also I can see now that might be part of why people wanted you to try SS13. I still haven't even played it myself, but I have seen actual full streams of rounds in it now.

It's in the same camp in terms of that interruption and time element, and same worth in risk for a play attempt. You generally know how long a round (life in OHOL for comparison) is going to last, but things can interrupt it and cut it short (non old age death in OHOL).

#14 Re: Main Forum » One Hour How Many Lives? » 2020-09-25 18:22:24

One hour one life.

If you didn't: make it to 60 desperately trying to accomplish something before you die, having a tearful goodbye with someone, or stand around in the last minutes munching berries reflecting and messing with the new childrens

Did you even live your life to the fullest?

Yeah, this is a weird one.

When I go back and read that initial post, I still wish the game was more like what that post was trying to achieve.  Difficult decisions, agonizing trade-offs, etc.  Carefully planning out and optimizing your interactions in relation to the interactions of your village-mates.

But tool slots didn't engender this feeling.  Yes, lots of annoying DING messages to explain what was going on, as you learned things.  But also, I think that people's general annoyance with them led me to weaken them to the point where they had no impact.  By weaken, I mean, "Give you so many slots that you don't usually need to think about them."

I mean, if there were 10 people in your village, and you each only got 3 tool slots, that you would really have to specialize and work together.  But then there's the question of whether this kind of specialization is interesting, and also the tedium that the communication and coordination would entail.  Finding the guy who can use the knife.  Over and over and over.

Furthermore, deciding which tool to learn isn't actually an agonizing decision.  It's an information problem.  If you had a god's eye view of the village, you could easily pick which tool to learn.  So it is possible to make an informed decision, but the process of informing yourself is itself tedious (running around the village asking people what tools need learning).  It's not an agonizing decision, because there is a correct answer available, with enough legwork.  So it's either busy work or random guess.  Most people just randomly guessed (or ignored it entirely until they ran out of slots, and then said, "now what?")

If you have four great wands but only three slots in Noita, the decision is agonizing, but that's not just because of the limited slots.  It's also because measuring which wand is better, in an absolute sense, might actually be impossible.  So you're forced to do your best, using your intuition.

I hadn't played noita when I first read your post describing tool slots and their intented feel, but after playing it I think I understand what you were going for a lot better now.

A little caveat about noita after the fact though. It's fun, but it's hard as shit Jason and completely luck based. Like less than 15% of the people who have that game have beat it and gotten the achievement on steam. Personally I have like 40 to 60 hours if remembering right, and while I'll probably go back to it, I doubt I'll ever beat it.

While OHOL cant be "won" obviously I guess I'm just saying keep an eye out for those pitfalls that come with grinding for a gameplay impact. Certain things should be hard and have to require planning, but there needs to be a natural less restricted flow state as well.

Huh, I've seen several mechanics questioned recently, but no serious discussion around this one. My only guess is that Jason has been spending time observing people in VOG. Yeah its odd, my guess is some VOG studying by Jason too, but idk.

He didn't say anything about yet it I think, unless I missed him on the discord.

I just want you to look at the paper cited in that picture and realize it has nothing to do with the data displayed on that graph.
It's 14 pages long and the time ranges in the graph of the paper (page 2) are from 10-16 thousand years. Whereas the graph you share only goes back 10 thousand. People make those images so people like you look stupid sharing them, I'm sorry, but you have fallen for a troll. Both of you have.

Morti I just pulled a random graph for reference.. there's like 5 to 10 of them out there for the data set. All probably from papers written trying to do prove or disprove something specific with it.

Attack the GRIP2 data or the project itself if you want to attack something. It's not 100% accurate but it gives us a idea. If your going to go after that, you're going to have to go after the folks how measure things in tree rings, and a couple more not exact measurement tools out there.

One thing I would like you all to note about that image, is the lack of any citation.
The person that made it, and those that share it, clearly do not care if you investigate it's sources.
They don't actually want you to go to anyone but them, for your opinion.
They are not the kind of people that care about you, Dodge.

I thought it was the greenland ice core project at first glance, which does show that temperature has drastically swayed both directions for the last 100,000 years without modern human involvement. The graphs dont really line up though.

That pic is just the last 10,000 years graphed. There's others with the full 100,000.

Vegas Vegas Vegas. Definitely haven't seen that same level of smoke today or yesterday, and your map confirms it.

#23 Re: Main Forum » Quick status update » 2020-08-24 05:51:43

I've seen the smoke for the last 4 days where I live. Didn't think the fires were getting that serious until yesterday.

I would definitely say stay there until it dies down a bit.

Stay safe in Arizona, and stay inside and drink a ton o water (get a purifier though, their water tastes like ass). That place is even hotter than where I live, and I've been melting this month. August is supposed to be our monsoon season, but so far nothing.

Arizona is still better than a bunker though, so hey it could be worse.

Cantface wrote:

The dogs don't live forever they just run around being useless. That's sad enough.

True.

They are vanity in game, however I feel like I remember almost every time I've seen them in game. Seeing them is special in that way, almost as a relief from the norm. I think they have too short of a lifespan, and should unrealistically live as long as a person, just because the realistic time is too short to appreciate. But I think they should age and die.

Those animals such as sheep, pigs, and even horses are strictly resources in game. Even in reality they mostly are only resources. In the 1000 foot view of humanity you would see most animals being used by people for their products. While they all realistically live age and die, the game represents that as managing them as resources.

Dogs (and maybe cats someday) dont fall into the resource management category in game. Other than pitbulls, there isn't any practical use for them. Maybe the german shepherd should have a positive use to balance them, but that's another topic. They dont serve a purpose other than a personal pleasure, for the most part, so therefore they should last as long as the person who wanted it.

So i think the more feel good animals feel right aging and dying, because it feels more personal to witness them be mortal like yourself.

You can literally give them your info, as long as it's private.

He's stating any account info that is in public space is fair to be deemed "escaped". Makes perfect sense.
