I also like the idea of buffing healing. It would mean that instead of convincing the town to help you kill someone, you just have to convince them to do nothing at all.
If realism is a problem, the knife could be changed to something less lethal, that would still result in death if you can't get help. It would be more like how you need someone to feed you when you get bitten by mosquitos.
Ugg... the pregnancy preview thing is a lot of work (new protocol, lots of room for bugs, etc.), and I'm not even sure if it would solve the problem, and it could be annoying (yet even MORE time where you really can't do anything before you play the game as a baby), and it would be a pretty huge change to a pretty great part of the game for new players (popping into existence as a screaming baby).
I don't understand why you think abruptly popping into existence is a great experience for new players. For youtubers maybe, but just the average new player? This has always been my least favorite part of game. I get so anxious, staring at the "waiting to be born" screen. It actually makes it harder for me to want to play.
It's not that I want to choose where I'm born: I never use /die because I like the randomness. I just don't like being abruptly thrown into a multiplayer game surrounded by other players who weren't expecting me.
Is this just me? Do other players enjoy this aspect of the game?
I feel like a major cause of the problem is that it is incredibly difficult to keep track of family members. It's difficult to feel like part of a family if you don't know where or who your family members are. It's completely impractical for a mother to care for her child after the age of three because you would have to constantly follow them around in order to know where they are and if they need help.
I think that if you want people to be able to get attached to a family in only an hour, you would need to give some in-game help. Something like a part of the UI that tells you where your family members are, or alerts when someone is about to die. I think if you remind players that their family exists, it will make them care more. As it is, when someone isn't on the same screen as you, they might as well not exist.
