"As usual, if you're using a customServer, you'll need to disable it to get the update.
Jason"
- from his last email, and several before it.
I was wondering for a while why my client wasn't updating. I'd close the client, change the file from '1' to '0', open it up again... then close it and change back... not realising that no update had occurred, or wondering where the update was.
(I didn't want to start a new life on a random server for various reasons but also didn't realise _I had to_).
So I went without an update for a while before finally realising *you have to actually log in to update*. And yes, that means playing a new life on a random server.
Didn't think this was pertinent enough to post in the reddit, but I hope Jason becomes aware of it somehow, as (maybe most people are aware, but) it's easy to assume the update occurs as long as useCustomServer.ini is set to zero and there's a proper client restart.
Perhaps "you'll need to disable it and *fully log in* to get the update" might help people (like me) better understand.
I played a little as soon as I found out about this server.
I was crowned as a King at birth in the major settlement, but didn't last long thanks to my noobishness.
Made a yt about it while I played again the next day but game crashed a couple times doing so.
Fixed that and then was glad to serve as a water fetcher in the same place. Lasted to old age and was happy enough with the experience.
(I haven't played too much of the game itself because I know I can't do a whole lot no matter how much I try to absorb from reading/watching others - and I don't want to be a burden, regardless of the server).
Tried again tonight on my first proper twitch stream. Had a great time even though I didn't see a major settlement until the end - nearly three hours in. Didn't get quite that same loving caring thing I had previously but still got a lot out of it.
As I say, I didn't see anything major until I was old in my last life - my child Bear showed me to a large town. But devoid of people.
It's all changed very much. In the space of a couple of days.
Oh well. I lived until old age, streaming with some good folk and giving birth to bears...
At least on my screen. Here's proof:

Is that a bug just on this server? It was weird but I got used to it. Raised a few bear kids, and as I say, one came back to fetch me in old age. They were all named 'Bear'.
Love all you all Bears!
Thanks for the suggestions.
Grey seems like a cool guy, all about helping his local civilisation evolve, but taking time to enjoy the game himself. Pies!
TyrantNomad is on a whole other level. Got some great tips, but he's very much a loner so far as I can tell - after a couple of hours of the 5-hour VOD where he wants to create a Garden of Eden. Some of it has blown my mind, and I expect the game to continue to do so as things progress.
Thanks again. More suggestions welcome.
Is it at all possible for decent players with a sensible mindset to post some quality youtube videos?
All I've seen so far is erratic 'entertainers' with no real concept of the game shout and scream at me.
It would be great to get a proper insight with a decent content creator who doesn't feel the need to get constantly hyperactive!
It's a really beneficial medium for new players to learn about the game. The wiki is ok and I've read the guide ( https://onehouronelife.gamepedia.com/Starting_Guide ) but it would really help to watch someone play who knows what they're doing and isn't trying to cater to young teens and just trying to get likes and ad revenue.
Please post any decent people I can watch and learn from in your reply.
Thanks.
(I really want to learn this game as well as I can and I feel that quality youtube might be very helpful).
