1. Community
2. Order, stop berry munching or I'll kill everyone in this town with my own bare hands.
3. Where community meets blood-thirsty murderers.
4. There are so many things but if I had to pick one probably bone meal because sheep bones take up so much space when you have repeated sheep griefers
5. Not necessarily remove but rework the curse mechanic so you can't get born near people you cursed unless it's the only option in which the game would have a popup letting you close the game or get born to that family
6. Garlicman an old dude in a suit made entirely of garlic with the power to shoot explosive garlic at people
7. It's really really tough to pick but probably Forman and Nicole they're 2 of my fave people and always made huge contributions when they're online
8. Hetuw can't log hours but I started playing in about November last year and gained an addiction to it almost immediately so probably a ton I keep playing because I like building weird things and starting cults and there's really no other game I can find like ohol
9. I've had so many fun lives (being in 2 of Gomi's videos, finding the brothel, starting a cult, running churches, building a plane, etc) but my favourites were my first 2 lives! First life I was Picola Banar my mom Estelle taught me to make pickles and was generally just super nice to me I still miss her and hope one day I can find out who she is. After that I was Joe Earnest at the ripe age of 3 I grabbed all the food I could carry and ran desperately trying to find the town so I could bury myself next to my mom and became the sheep keeper!
10. I don't think I've had any like awful experiences (I used to regularly get death threats, rape threats, doxxing threats, etc on Rust and other games so like nothing anywhere near that level of bad) honestly probably worst is just people calling me a couple slurs when they were griefing
So you just bought OHOL and want to know how to git gud? Good thing this guide is here!
First things first do you have discord? If you do great! Here is a link to the official OHOL discord they are more active than the forums and usually helpful! https://discord.gg/hpJcTtBsA4
Secondly, onetech is incredibly useful for crafting recipes find it here! https://onetech.info/
Okay now for the important stuff!
Feel like the fov is really small? Same! Thankfully there are plenty of mod options to help you! Ask in the discord for the links! I personally use hetuw but wondible's is amazing too!
Now onto my list of basic advice!!!
1. Learn about yum! If you pick up food it will either say meh or yum depending on if you've ate it before or not! Only eat foods that say yum unless you are starving! Yum food give you way more food
2. Ask for help!!! We would much rather you ask us for help than try to do something you don't know by yourself! Some things can be really hard to figure out and you can usually always find someone willing to help!
3. Basic communication! When you are a baby and starving say "F" to be fed! The amount of letters you can type depends on your age! "Y" is yes "N" is no trying to communicate beyond those 3 as a baby is kind of pointless. Please be mindful before you turn 1 every time you talk you cry so say if you were trying to say "Hi I'm new" you would cry for every individual letter and that can be a teensy bit grating on peoples nerves when every baby does it in a nursery full of bbs! (Might just be me though)
4. Don't click on bear caves! You do not want to have a picnic with Yogi you will become the main course!
5. The best tasks you can do as a new player are farming, making clothes, cooking, and tending animals!
How do I do that?
Farming:
1. Find a bowl
2. Fill it with soil or water
3. For soil find a hardened row and click on it while holding the bowl for water find a dry seeded row and click on it while holding the bowl
4. For soil find a hoe and click on the row you put soil on then add seeds
Clothing:
Cotton clothes
1. Find a bowl
2. Fill a bowl with berries and 1 carrot
3. Find a sheared domestic sheep
4. Click on the sheep
5. Wait until the sheep grows wool
6. Find shears and click on sheep with them
7. Pick up wool and use spindel on it to turn it into balls of thread
8. Combine balls of thread into balls of yarn
9. If you have a loom put balls of yarn onto it until its full then use shears
10. Depending on what type of clothes you want to make use shears or needle and thread
Fur clothes
1. Find a snare, sharp rock, burdock, and flat rock
2. Put burdock on flat rock use the sharp rock on it
3. Put snare on rabbit hole (Only the ones where you can see rabbits)
4. Use the flat rock on snared hole
5. Wait for a rabbit to get trapped and die
6. Pick up rabbit skin it with flint chip
7. Combine multiple furs to make different types of clothes
8. Use a needle and thread to turn the furs into clothes
Cooking:
Pies are the most basic cooking to learn and also one of the most important. It uses a combination of carrots, berries, rabbit, and mutton depending on what type of pie you want to make
1. Find 3-6 bowls, a bucket of water, threshed wheat, a sharp stone, a round stone, 4 plates, kindling, a long straight shaft, and your choice of pie fillings listed above
2. Put wheat into a bowl and use round stone on it
3. Get a bowl of water and combine it with a bowl of flour
4. Place onto plates
5. Fill other bowls with filling choices and use sharp stone on them
6. Place fillings in pies
7. Place kindling in an adobe oven
8. Use a long straight shaft on fire then the oven to light it
9. After fire in oven goes out use the uncooked pies on the oven to cook them
Animals:
The most basic animal you will find is sheep so I'll only be covering those for now
1. Find a bowl
2. Fill a bowl with berries and 1 carrot
3. Find a sheared domestic sheep
4. Click on the sheep
And with all those things learned you've completed your introduction make sure to be nice to each other!
(Vets feel free to add any advice remember to be nice though we don't wanna scare these guys away!)
(I'll be adding more to the guide eventually whenever I get motivation)
I could live without hetuw and phex but I don't enjoy the game without it hetuw solves the steep learning curve and makes it so the game is what I want in a game that I haven't been able to really find anywhere else. I've played countless lives when the player count was low without phex since there wasn't anyone on with phex and it was fine. Hetuw users aren't noobs we've just found something that improves the game and lets us focus on bigger objectives than searching for items and spending ages trying to find other families. I always try to tell new players about hetuw just like I try to tell them about the discord. Games aren't fun to me if it's an endless grind that feels more like chores so hetuw helps me with that I get to focus on fun tasks (or at least did when towns were larger and fully functioning) like building libraries, becoming a chef, learning to make engines, learning oil, becoming a traveling tattoo artist, trying to beat my yum score, running a winery, being a sheep keeper, making a casino, marrying people, making houses, doing stuff I enjoy rather than repeating the same tasks and living as an eve constantly. In my opinion, the game is the best when we have long lines in well-established towns it enables everyone to live the life they want. People will inevitably take on the needed roles that make sure the town stays functional and others will create things to keep us entertained. Hetuw and phex help us get to those points and ensure we do our best to stay there. Trying to push people to do nothing but grind pushes people away especially new players. If I would have joined and played for a couple of hours in an eve town I probably would have just uninstalled. My first life (at least that I can remember) I was in the incredibly old Red fam when we had the crossroads. The town's needs were well taken care of by others and it gave my mom a chance to teach me to make pickles and feed sheep. I enjoyed that life so much that I came back every life to ensure the town and family stayed safe and that gave me my name Joe Earnest the sheep keeper. Everyone else had taken care of the grinding parts and got us to a point where we really didn't have to grind so I was able to learn at my own pace and stick to what I enjoyed instead of getting frustrated trying to figure out how to do anything with no help because everyone else was busy. Anyway, my point is hetuw and phex enable people to enjoy the game and help towns get further which makes the game more enjoyable for everyone. If you really want to grind that much there are other servers you can connect to and live as an eve but I'm going to continue trying to make the game enjoyable for everyone. You play how you want and I'll play how I want.
Honestly phex is the worst thing to ever happen to this game. All it does is promote elitism, bullying, exclusion, and general cheese mechanics. If you want to play this game normally or without that feature you're at a disadvantage. Most phex user wont even talk to you unless you're using phex. Most town vaults are all run by phex users while any vanilla user is kept on the outside. It promotes a disgusting dynamic. I respect the developers who made it but neither have been show the respect they deserve from the community and their creation has been corrupted by it. Anonymity used to be a beautiful feature of this game, and it doesn't exist due to phex/hetuw. ily whatever, ily shadow, i know you put a lot of love and work into this feature, but seriously consider removing it.
Maybe I just don't play at the wrong times or play enough anymore but I haven't really seen any of the stuff you've talked about? I do sometimes accidentally ignore non-phex users but it's usually because either I'm doing something repetitive or that requires my entire focus or people have been talking so much around me that I don't notice their text bubble because I assume they are talking to other people. Honestly, anonymity is still there unless you're griefing or talking to friends. All I've ever seen phex users doing that puts others at a disadvantage is being able to call others for help saving a town or getting a craving I can't count the number of times I've seen phex users saving towns and it's amazing how fast I can get help getting cravings or fertile people when I ask for help. Phex for me has been an amazing tool I get help tracking griefers, saving my family, getting food, getting race locked items, communicating with other families, being taught recipes, and tons of other stuff, and in return I help others with the same things. Phex kept me from quitting the game because it gave me more of a sense of community and help with the steep learning curve. That's just my take on it though and I'm sure other people feel differently. :)
if theres someone in the nursery or kitchen drop them there and be like "hey can you take care of my bb they're a noob and I'm v busy ok tyyy byeee" without letting them respond with the amount of stuff I've had to do in recent lives and the amount of my bbs that I actually cared for that turned out to be griefers i'd rather have a designated team in the nursery to take care of all bbs especially if I'm focused on making an engine or equally important thing
Why food runs out SO FAST
the large influx of newer players that don't know how to yum the most efficient way
Why is everyone forced to share EVERYTHING
I quite like that aspect as someone in the discord said it's like a giant library you only borrow things for your lifetime so others can use them in theirs
Why building walls takes extreme effort and never efficient
personally I don't find it to be an extreme effort and I've made a fair number of buildings
Why only ONE BUILDING should have ONE FIRE and everyone has to share it
using more than one can be a waste of resources that gives virtually no benefit and takes up space
Why can't we have our own houses, with closets for our clothes and stoves for cooking and fridges for storage
want your own house? make one nobody is stopping you that was actually something I wanted to attempt at some point (I don't however like the fridge idea the logistics of getting electricity and having tons of houses with it seems like a lot of effort that would take lots of resources and overall bring the game closer to our world which I don't really enjoy)
Why can't we run our own business, our own farm, our own store
you can kind of run businesses implementing a mechanic though I'm not a fan of I like the community effort that the game currently is and I feel like capitalism would ruin it
Why can't tech tree advance beyond vehicles and engines
that takes game development time and can be largely difficult to implement without wildly steering off the course the game is currently on
Why property fences ownership can be shared but not doors
I feel like that would cause a lot of griefers
Why can't gate ownerships pass down to your kids
you can just say "insert name owns this" it doesn't take a lot of effort
Why there is no updates to add new items, plants, animals, a few each update never hurts
jason isn't able to update currently from what I know unless people are just memeing he has important irl stuff currently and wasn't anticipating the game to blow up right now and have tons of new players asking for updates
people brought up some good points but I mainly wanted to give at least what I think are answers and my opinion (I've only been playing for a lil while tho so idk)
