Whats the etiquette for joining a family? Do I just farm or do I try and make new things/expand further down the tech tree?

I brought this game after I spent way to long reading the wiki and onetech, and was excited to see where it was going. Now Jason has disappeared off to do whatever, without even a proper send off to the game. What happened?
