Ok, now that I've got your attention, seriously what is wrong with a fence pen? It's not that difficult.
The worst of them all, the trash pit pen. Yes, yes, it's cheap and easy, it's fast, and it works. But you know what it is and isn't at the same time? Permanent.
You know what can go in trash pits? Dead lambs. You know what is constantly produced in the average sheep pen? Dead lambs. You know what it says when you pick up a dead lamb? First recipe is Dead Lamb + Trash Pit. Yup.. And you wonder why new people throw the sheep in it. They don't know how the game works.
And one way we can solve this? Maybe educate the new people, spread the word that dead lambs will despawn if you just leave them alone. You know what's an even better solution? Don't be lazy. Pick off the maple branches around whenever you can, if you're closer than 100 tiles away from camp, pick off a maple branch when you see it. It will help in the future, especially when you're an eve, do it right away. If you have at least 16 or more maple trees around you, you can make 8 fences per hour, you could make a decently sized sheep pen by generation 3 or 4, and have a nice looking, functioning sheep pen that can't be as easily griefed (intentionally or unintentionally) by just throwing dead lambs, leaves, tinder, anything. It's so easy to grief these pens, and guess what? Remember I said it's permanent too? It is, those trash pits will stay there forever, wasted space. Now, onto the other kinds.. A rose pen. Permanent, can never be moved. And that's a good and a bad thing. Someone could build one more rose bush on the entrance and then your civilization collapses. Same with grave pens. All of these are bad ideas, just don't be lazy, and make a fence pen.
Past few updates have been subpar
Dogs that are useless
Trees that grow more than a century.
What next?
Mine for flat rocks that take millennium to construct? And another millennium to start harvesting?
Quick refference
Maple
Some trees are slow growers (20-30 years to reach full size) and some are fast (10-15 years). Red maple (Acer rubrum) is a moderately fast grower; given good growing conditions, it should put on 1-2 feet of growth per year once established.
PoplarGROWTH PER YEAR: 8-10 ft
HEIGHT IN 3 YEARS: 30-40 ft
MATURE HEIGHT: 40-60 ft
Basically a weedTlDr
Trees should not take that long to grow
You wait an hour for long branches for fence kits. I don't see why growing a whole tree taking an hour is a big deal..
How ungrateful can you get? We've gotten amazing updates, pushing out griefers, all the new little things, some new stackables, bugfixes, TREE FARMING is great! (Found out today Juniper is not a thing, I believe the "Juniper" I thought is maybe a bonsai after it's gone through it's first stage, perhaps..)
Not everything in this game is entirely realistic either, so.. Try be be grateful for what you DO get instead of what you don't get.
Jason is developing the game all by himself, handling emails, refunds, looking at forums, reddit, discord, drawing everything on his own, and most of the sounds mouth made, while also living life with his family too. You can't expect a whole lot here, be happy it gets updated.
Bonsai tree will grow into jungle tree or something new? Also I think It should take three-two hours to grow. Im still waiting for dogs to be useful but planting some trees is fine too
Bonsais will be limited to yew bonsais. We haven't yet seen the sprites for the fully grown bonsai yet, but I'm keeping the post updated as we find more, so make sure to look in every now and then!
Tarr wrote:Booklat1 wrote:I hope tree farming is really water demanding. Just to ballance it out you know? Also would be an incentive for people to use cisterns more often.
I'd rather it be something like it takes a few generation to get a full tree but each generation has to be mindful to take care of your trees kind of like a mini bell tower project.
An hour or two would not be unrealistic for a sapling to grow to a full tree. Forestry is a generation project in real life too, as we all know. But having it take more than two generations would be really boring.
Wood and other non-replenishing resources are so finite that it gets boring if you run out and have to go really far to get more. It makes city-building near impossible.
Doesn't it take something like 100 years for an oak to fully mature? If so, it would make a lot of sense to have it be at 100 minutes, or 2 hours, or something similar. I also don't think there will be a dead tree @Dodge since those are dead, meaning you can't grow a dead sapling right? xP And the swamp trees no either, cause they're just for wood, whereas all these trees give a branch except juniper, but that gives us tinder.
Credit to Sharlank for digging around to find the sprites.
.
I will update this as we find more sprites. Currently it seems Jason hasn't fully implemented them all on Github yet, but we'll keep looking out for them.
This ain't right. Jason, you said you wiped all the curses, but I still got mine.
Anyone else have this problem? I'm really annoyed.
I love all the ideas, thanks guys! Especially I like the one with making bacon, and using the grease from that, it makes a ton of sense!
Spit roasting the pigs would be awesome, make a trophy saying "I killed this, you're welcome!" haha.
Yes, yes, I don't quite like the oil part. Perhaps squeezing the grease out of a cooked goose would be cool, would give a reason to keep a goose farm too!
I've come up with recipes for everything needed.
Knife + Potato = Skinned Potato
3 Blade Blanks + Smithing Hammer = Cutter
Onion + Flat Rock = Onion on Flat Rock + Flat Rock = Crushed Onion - Flat Rock + Bowl = Onion Juice
Empty Crock + Water + Water + Salt Water + Onion Juice = Crock of Cooking Oil
Crock of Cooking Oil + Hot Coals = Hot Cooking Oil
Skinned Potato + Bow of Simmering Water = Soft Potato
Soft Potato + Plate = Soft Potato on Plate
Cutter + Soft Potato on Plate = Uncooked French Fries
Uncooked French Fries + Oven = Plate of French Fries
Bowl of Salt + Plate of French Fries = Salted French Fries
You can eat the French Fries without salt, but salting them adds calories.
Feel free to add adjustments and/or comment what you think!
Edit: Forgot a recipe, and fixed a couple grammatical errors.
Haha, nice.. I just tried it myself and got it deleted too!
Is there a particular reason why items dont switch in the backpack?
You can switch items in baskets, cart, boxes etc but to reach the last item in the backpack you have to put all your stuff on the ground first before you can get that item
Just right click the item you want; works with baskets too. I'm surprised nobody knows this.
In-case you're not aware, backpacks will act like baskets even when on your back.
This is especially annoying with food, so here's a scenario in-case you don't understand:
You have 3 carrots in your bag, and you pick up a pie to bring with you, when you try to put it in your bag by right-clicking as usual, you end up swapping it out for a carrot.
Now, personally I'm not a fan of this at all, and I don't think anyone else is either.
What's your opinion? Have you used a backpack since the new update a few hours ago, or were you entirely unaware? Let me know, and let's try to get Jason to revert it back to the way it always has been.
I agree with West, let him be. Stay on your vacation, Jason.. You deserve to relax and be with family for a while. This is a glitch we can live with (pun intended).
Suggested complex process: take raw hide, place in crock full of quicklime&water. Wait a while. Remove limed hide. use knife to scrape hair off - result scraped hide. Place in crock of water to wash off lime. Wait awhile. Remove washed hide. Fill crock with pine needles and water. Wait awhile - result crock of tannin water. Place hide inside crock of tannin water. Wait awhile - result tanned hide. Stretch tanned hide on a wall of any kind. Wait awhile for it to dry. Result leather. That's a pretty good approximation of the rl process, and I think would take a pretty long time to complete. Also gives an actual use for pine needles. Also lime is a limited resource.
Shortened process might be use quicklime on hide to get limed hide, place in crock full of tannin water, wait, stretch, wait = leather.
Omit quicklime to make renewable. Or just add limestone mines.
This is an awesome process, and I like the pine needles and the limestone for limited resource! Super long, nice and complicated, and maybe it takes 3 hide and 2 ropes for a backpack strap to make it?
EDIT: Needle and full ball of thread to sew it all together.
backpacks should belong to adults only
the times i see that a noob gets a packs and you who made it last life, you get left outgenerally the game is easy i normally wouldnt mind working for stuff but if we ever wanna teach people and do stuff, it should be a bit easier
not time consuming just would require new tools, and the knowledge to do it, just the privacy it gives, packs are necessary every life
But the fact that you would have a backpack that never decays, you really need to work for it. It should be a long process to do, and perhaps would require resources that aren't renewable so you can't just make infinite packs.
This is a suggestion post, leather is not in the game nor has Jason confirmed or mentioned anything about it. This is simply an idea thought up by me and J3ng3n.
Notice that not all details have been worked out.
We were discussing how we've been a bit disappointed that we can't store things very well.. Yes, there are crates and sledges which do not decay, but that's still only 4 items a tile, and are quite time consuming to make.
J3 brought up the idea of backpacks not decaying, and I told him that would be too overpowered, seeing as backpacks are very very cheap if you have the rabbits for it, and keep up with snaring them.
I told him we would need a very expensive and time consuming way to have a non-decaying basket alternative, AKA: A container that fits inside a box, as I don't think it should be easy to get to that point.
When decay was released, we got the alternative of stone walls to adobe, and a few non-decaying clothing items (Albeit in the future).
We discussed leather, and J3 said there should be a leather backpack, made with the same amount of leather as rabbit fur, but much more expensive and time consuming to get, and it wouldn't decay.
As we talked, we came up with different ways to turn the leather from just cow skin, into a durable material that would last forever.
Most of which I cannot remember the processes we came up with, but it would take a lot of work to do anything.
I'm sure if Jason uses the idea for leather backpacks, he will come up with a fairly difficult balanced way to process leather.
What do you all think? Should we have leather backpacks?

Yes, more dye is coming in the future. I'm shooting for some breadth before I go for depth in specific areas. But there will be depth, eventually.
When you do add this, add the ability to domesticate (regrow) them as well, so I don't feel like dying clothes is just a waste, as it's non-renewable. <3
Love you papa.
There's a way to get there, but only as an eve.
If you spawn as eve and get this, just die of old age, you don't have to run anywhere.
You will spawn there for your next eve spawn, and can keep spawning there so long as you die of old age over and over.
You're welcome.
Edit: "Your next eve spawn" does not necessarily have to be your next login, just the next time you are eve, so you can be born to someone in between as well.
Awesome art! I wish I could draw haha, I'd probably do it all the time.
Dear Allyssa Civil,
Hi, how are you? It's momma.
Sorry to have died a few minutes early on you, I could have stayed longer, but I felt like my job had been done.
Here's my story. (Keep in mind I don't play on localhost much, but this was a nice experience!)
I was born into the Civil family, a rather big family, with a not so big town. A pretty small berry farm, nothing but a singular shovel and a broken axe, with no black biomes in sight.
I started off after I was raised by my 2 aunties, whom I cannot remember the names of (sorry) and once I could take off, I did, and headed straight for the berry farm so I didn't starve immediately.
As soon as I got some berries, and a bowl to hold some in I went exploring around, and found myself a dead bison calf, and my goal was to find out what bison do, and to catch one myself! Sadly, like I said it had already died, so I figured it's mother would be near.
I explored a bit around the area to find it's mother, alongside a dead body with a backpack, arrows, and a bow, with a bear very nearby!
I warned everyone of the bear, and Winter was going to help me but needed to be a mother, so I waited til I could pick up the bow, and I slayed the bear.
Afterwards, I baked a few pre-made pies, and brought back some more dough to make even more pies!
Fast forwarding, I found another bear later, this time closer. I killed this one as easily as the last, and I saved everyone. We later found out there was a griefer, not killing, but stealing food, and supplies; I still don't know what came of them, but I assumed they died.
I saw they only had 2 measly pieces of iron, which for some reason they made 2 axes, instead of getting another tool for more purposes. I decided with my last years, it's about time I put in some real work and effort, so I went off south, and kept going until I found iron, which I did. Only 5, but it will go a long way.
I hope, Allyssa, that you and the others are smart with this and make the tools necessary to break into those 2 iron veins I told you about.
Be careful, there's a lot of snakes on the way, and around 6-7 wolves running around there too!
Be safe, momma loves you.
We're not doing anything wrong by creating our own towns though. It is the style of gameplay we choose, and we rarely even play on the public servers, we're usually very in the background on a quiet server like 10 or whatever, and we don't bother anyone else. We don't shut out noobs, or whatever you call them, we often like to let them in and play, but for large projects such as our old 111 gen run (Which was commended by Jason) we just can't afford to have someone in there who is not able to verbally communicate with us. Also, that project was done on S6, which was only populated by us for about 90% of the whole thing (over the course of 2 days).
As I've stated, we play a certain way, and if there is a "fix" to how we play, then we will no longer feel motivated to play, as we usually like to start, and thus continue projects. It's already not easy for us to get back; do you know how long it takes to run 6000 blocks? 30 damn minutes.. 5 minutes for every thousand, and it certainly adds up FAST.
If this is implemented, I can guarantee you Jason will see a major decrease in the people more known among the community playing.
There should be a playtesting server, move an update a day later, and the day the update is actually finished, Jason can push it to the playtest server, in which players picked from the community by Jason will be able to test out everything, do a quick play session and try out all the new and old features. This is in the case there are bugs (with this update there is the broken knife/hatchet obtainment).
With all bugs found, and all new features tested to make sure it would be balanced for gameplay both from average players, Discord players, and the ones who tested it.
I believe this will prevent all the super buggy releases like this one that cause chaos among players, or the community in general, such as the first decay update, it got a lot of backlash because it wasn't balanced enough; and this update, in which you can obtain infinite hatchets, and knives, among other things that I may not be aware of yet, also wells with only 2 stones. These can be prevented if there is a day-early push for a private server in which only a few players who are good at speed-running the tech-tree.
That looks awesome to me, it looks like a ruined town, it's not working like I thought it would but what it's doing is actually pretty great in itself. It's not a bug, it's a feature haha
Thing is, for the people that are in Discord, or just know how to get back to where they were, it's pretty devastating to come back and see half of our work completely ruined, wolves, snakes, and bears come back, sheep are on the loose, horses are too. We had 6 captured bears, and now they're gone. We had over 100 pies on the ground, those are all gone.

The above video is an example of what happens after an update to most towns.
If you find yourself back at a town you'd previously been in, it's very likely to look something like what's in the video, unfinished, or destroyed mostly (after an update(server restart)).
This is because when the server decides what to cull on reset, it will detect any item or tile that was NOT interacted with within the last 24 hours. This means explored parts of the map do not matter, it's only INTERACTED parts of the map that matter, that being doors being closed/shut, walls being clicked on, tiles that had an item put down or picked up on it, kilns/ovens/forges being used, etc.. I've PM'd Jason this video, and hopefully this bug will get fixed ASAP.
