Foreman wants shovel to prevent the rogue baby from leaving Eve and making their own well site/iron veins. Jason please do not be silly, in a world where there is 1600 loose iron it is incredibly difficult to hide all of the iron.

I can't speak for anyone else but I know for a fact that I've hijacked Eves iron to put a town in a more desirable spot for what I seek in a town location - e.g. I want a big snow biome I can build in. Depending on what Eve values (picking spot vs early children) having a rogue child kind of sucks. I'm sure I'm not the only person out there who hijacks eves like this either.

The only time a troll could potentially hide all the iron is during a server reset with an apocalypse attached and even then there's likely to be 5-6 Eves on server reset. I guess maybe if we're thinking years out when the game isn't being supported it could be problematic. Either way, I don't think it matters but allowing more iron to open allows the people who want "fresh" ohol an option to at least try to make a new town vs allowing the people who want to work on the old towns an option too.

I mean you would just kill your branch of the family once you got over gen like 10. I think it would be better to unlock iron in an band that isn't your own and either spend a few hours setting up farms or working with others to set up a location for other families to move in to. I'd really like to see another content family where they last long enough that it's actually a needed thing to move an old family closer to the others.

Currently on wondibles map there's 1577 loose iron and 123 piles of some amount of iron sitting around.

While I don't think the goal of the thread is to make iron more annoying Forman is asking for iron unlocks not to be used up until the Eve or someone digs the first well since you can technically steal your moms iron if you focus on running somewhere else and setting up stones.

The only thing I find concerning is there's only a total of 9 kerosene mining rig (7 without tips, 2 with). If he goal is to use oil for iron things would probably need to be less forgiving. I'd almost go the other way though because currently the only way a family can move and get iron is to steal from dead towns or use the rig and the rig is way too expensive for an old family to move. Game mechanics will kill a family that moves without  proper setup so unlocking extra iron would still have a cost (food to mine) and I don't feel like the extra added iron would really screw with anything.

The difference is, you know who the school shooter or the mass murderer is when you join into a family when you have someone cursed. As long as you aren't cursing for dumb things you know who the annoying sheep killer is or the person sitting around trying to troll. While Yes, I don't want to be around these people a double block curse system is ripe for abuse especially with all the new accounts sitting around.

Bear caves only release one bear per server reset. This in my opinion is fine as this means you can clear caves once per week as a means to protect town. Following this I agree (and had already put in a github issue) that horses should not be invulnerable to dangerous animals.

Before you tell me all the horses are gonna get griefed this way this can already be done with snakes in the desert. If people are gonna lure bears it should either be gatekept through skill (gotta lure them without getting bit) or tech (don't let trucks and cars get damaged by dangerous animals.)

Maybe curses need to double block players? I don't know about other people but I curse people to their faces because I do not want to be born around the people I'm cursing anyways. Unfortunately curses right now aren't super effective because the most heinous members of the community already have a bunch of accounts (some using steam + vpn to get accounts cheaply). Maybe a combination of previous curse mechanics would help? What if we returned to the state where accounts with high curses would automatically appear cursed to others? The discord clearly tracks curse names and would be able to use to essentially check if an account is on the public shitlist. However, issue is people not in the discord are likely to just curse people who are showing as global donkeys.

I'm hoping the changes to gene score this week will make murder griefing to be more volatile as now if you start murdering your family it's going to smash your score as almost everyone (besides cousins) are gonna drain you score. This of course means a bunch of idiots dying are going to dunk your score but if you truly care about your gene score you gotta actually help in the case of trolls.

Returning to bears - It's incredibly easy to bear proof a building by setting up sheep pen styled airlocks on buildings. Of course the trade off is your basically make the inside of the building easy to boar bomb. In the spirit of Jason I would say you could always fence a town up to prevent bears but I think we all know how much of a pain that is. Also I hadn't thought of this before the tapout on gates but is it even possible to make a grief proof town gate? If you put something that blocks in front of the gate someone will block the tiles directly north and south of the tile now you can't actually leave your town. If you put the gate the other way someone can just build another gate to bust your gate. Basically trolls made it impossible to use a gate for its actual use by making gates into walls.

Unfortunately as stated: The best thing to do is literally not play when trolls are playing. You can't effectively curse them (account sharing of a bunch of bought accounts), You can't build fences around towns to stop them (they'll lock you in), and you can't kill them (either they have high score due to afking accounts or not effected by trolling due to gene score.)

Do you try to empower those who are dealing with griefers? If you remove /die restriction from posse it allows the good guys to basically quickly spawn in to an area to help struggling towns deal with trolls. However, this enables the problem that got it restricted in the first place - Trolls will communicate which town to spawn into and kill them. Do you reenable twin/groups to be able to join posses? This makes dealing with a solo troll quickly as a twin group can exile/kill (if high gene score) without consulting or dealing with gathering a group. Of course this makes it even easier for troll groups to do the same.

But yeah, anything you do to combat trolls is also a weapon for the trolls.

Just imagine how you would try to make apoc yourself and finally understand that you would not have a damn chance

I mean here's the funny thing is that I've attempted it in the past solo and got to t3 and was only stopped because Jason literally put all the players on the same server. I have plenty of experience with apocalypse making because I was trying to prove it was impossible when it the 24 hour restriction was put on it.

Even without wondibles map you still have to babysit the thing for 12 hours because it's going to give everyone on the server a bell marker pointing to the apocalypse. I find it goofy that you're complaining that 5 people are having to fight off the whole server when you guys are choosing to try to wipe the server. Do you really people to just let you do that uncontested?

This is a repeating cycle where new people pop up and decide they want to decide to try to wipe the server for whatever reason and veterans come in stop it. People on both sides have complained forever that nothing lasts, then when towns are stable people complain nothing is fresh, then we bounce back and forth.

I reiterate this over and over again. We are 5 years into ohol everything will be built back up in hours after a wipe. This games early game is perfected at this point and the only thing going to make things difficult is a new player boom. I hear people cry they want to build fresh but I never see anyone saying how much fun they're having on server 1 where nothing is built up when the option occurs.

The apocalypse is doable when it is needed. We've come together to wipe the server before when Jason botched an update so when the community decides together to wipe the apocalypse can go off.

I think this just calls back to the  age old struggle of trying to keep things around long enough to cherish them and fresh enough to enjoy starting to build something from scratch. The problem with the latter is that the game can never go back to being 4 different Eve villages starting up fresh and slowly progressing up the tech tree. Five years into ohol and the players who have stuck around are too good to be stuck in an endless loop of constant Eve villages. The only time this occurs is with player booms when s1 is active.

I think Jason needs to look at allowing iron to be harvested from multiple mines to at least attempt to allow players to break away from villages to build their own outposts. With iron already being an easy enough to gather resource either from dead towns or just getting it in general there's not really an excuse to limit veins popped. Kerosene is the major bottleneck and we still see these giant kerosene runs being made by vets.

The apocalypse also needs to be doable. Current iteration has only ever occurred through bug abuse (bear cave exploit) and only nearly went off due to abusing gates. I'm not sure whether the time should be cut in half as a 12 hour session would be much more doable for a small group or it needs to be changed to be more resource intensive instead of time intensive.

So me and Jason once had a conversation on what makes for an interesting story in game and tonight definitely ventured into the territory of a very uniquely ohol experience.

Basically an apocalypse group decided to barricade an abandoned town with two sets of property fences as a means to prevent anyone outside of their group from getting into the area where they were sheltering their apocalypse tower. This thing was huge and probably had at least a few hundred property gates that were passed back and forth via two accounts sheltering in the area only birthing the other account then rinse and repeating births over and over again.

Basically under normal circumstances if the player using his two accounts was willing to sit around for 24 hours (I believe they were basically tagging off with others in the group to afk) this would have been an unstoppable apocalypse due to no players being able to breach any of the gates as currently in game there is no way to deconstruct a gate without having ownership (thus the github request to make a means to dismantle them)

So here's the funny thing, while the apocalypse group was smart enough to use an item that couldn't be deconstructed, they didn't actually do their homework to know that it's possible to jam a player onto an impassible object. Because Jason had never actually patched how plays work players were able to get on top of the 1 tile thick gates, proceed to slide the plane over then breach the second wall as well. At this point the apocalypse attempt was over after reaching T3 tower.

This of course skips all the hard work the anti-apocalypse group had to do to get this stuff prepped but honestly this made for an actual interesting story that you only ever experience in ohol. Two different exploits were used by two different groups to attempt to both end and save the world.

As a god fearing American it's not my job to read a wall of text let alone a book.

If this is a thread about trolls in the community the current issue is someone very likely went through steam and region changed to buy a billion accounts which they share with other trolls. The easiest fix for this is to use a combination of accounts with X amount of curses being blocked to donkey town until their curses fade. To mitigate trolls using their accounts to perma block other accounts make it so the threshold takes into account both online and offline accounts like it does now.

This would help solve the issue of the same troll repeatedly account hopping as eventually they would brick their accounts for three months.

If this thread is about something else then ignore everything I said because to quote Jesus "Ain't no way I'm reading all that shit." Book 4:20

I really don't think there should be one family per server even if he reenabled babies being born different races I believe it would be boring. Without going through all the hub bub of talking racial restrictions I believe there should at least a few different families. The game is properly balanced (imo) around 10-15 people per family, not too much struggling and not too much to worry about. When we've seen 30+ people in a family things get chaotic which I mean is cool but it becomes difficult to actually teach people.

If no racial restrictions the game should probably spit out an Eve for every 15 players on the server which would lead to an average of 4-5 families when peak times. I'm honestly at the point that I believe if people can run around and constantly supply kerosene then iron should be unlockable just like multiple wells. Kerosene is the what determines whether or not an area is livable, there's too many dead families producing iron or whatever.

Letting iron be produced like wells would allow people to run off and start new areas which is both good and bad. Good because people can stop complaining about resettling, bad because pip food decay will kill anyone trying to do this without the skillset to actually produce yum quickly.

Horse bug is finicky to produce and as such I wouldn't horse around and try to fix it.

Requires a player to be any race but black
Requires enough players on to turn on racial specializations
Requires running through the snake in the desert into the badlands

It only duplicates a horse but out of lets say 15 attempts I ended up with three spare horses. It's a weird bug that takes too much effort and luck to get to go off in my opinion.

#38 Re: Main Forum » Well Should Collapse » 2023-05-26 01:40:01

fug

Hard disagree. This would screw with low population by making people needing to login to the game once a day or two to prevent culling.

Kerosene works as a natural deterrent to resettling as eventually you don't have people bringing you oil to continue living somewhere, and people shouldn't be punished for putting in the effort to keep a place running.

#39 Re: Main Forum » People Keep Resettling Old Towns » 2023-05-26 01:38:21

fug

But that's the point of kerosene. You can't live somewhere without oil and eventually oil gets too scarce in an area to repopulate it without the effort of pro players basically constantly running supplies of kerosene.

Just because you don't want to be stuck in the same city doesn't me the new people don't. I mean I personally only play in new villages so I wait until something fresh pops up instead of playing in the cities I find boring. There doesn't need to be  mechanic to block going to a place some much as there needs to be a means for people to start fresh when wanted/needed.

#40 Re: Main Forum » People Keep Resettling Old Towns » 2023-05-25 22:56:11

fug

This has literally always been a thing in this game.

The issue in my opinion is that because Jason changed iron to only be unlocked once people who would prefer to play in either a new area or start a new village are screwed over because they cannot know if their iron has been used or not.

People who want to return to their previous villages can do so since people build highways which just lets the players easily resettle the old villages regardless if it's viable to do so or not.

Both sides have negatives as playing as a pretend Eve will kill the family branch due to generational food decay and people migrating east will make it difficult for the server be stable due to families getting further and further apart.

The apocalypse in it's current form is undoable hence why we've not seen it done in the last 415 days or so due to a combination of lack of knowledge on the goofballs making them, and the skill difference of the players who stop them. The apocalypse shouldn't be a time based trigger but something that requires a large amount of resources and a group of people so it's more of a group decision to wipe the server.

As with most systems in the game it was added at a time where it made "sense" in a means of deterring people from having mixed race families but now due to the fact people can never remain close enough to actually learn the system it's busted.

I really have disdain for systems that encourage players to just avoid the language system entirely. Obviously previous to this people used phex chat to get around the dumb language barrier and without it vet groups just go to different towns and do all the stuff anyways. We just end up getting into these dumb cycles where Jason introduces something then fixes it followed by him breaking it again by not thinking about what was previously put in place which is the exact cycle of how languages worked.

Introduce people speaking gibberish, add in learning languages, then make it so you can't actually learn by making people not be near each other. Good work.

Game can't really handle that sort of thing.

Jason would tell you to put a fence around your whole village (bad)

You can always go around and either block caves (okay)

You can always kill the bears early (better)

I would tell you to just curse people doing this but it's a known thing that anyone who unironically griefs this game has a bunch of accounts.
