There is definitely a town with kerosene right now, found them earlier while exploring
So you can ride your horse through a bad biome, but if you hit a snake you're stuck there forever since you can't get off the horse in a bad biome.

Rip me.
Count those 25 recent lives but exclude the worst and the best ones. Average matters more than getting good/bad luck.
^ Yes please.
Teenage & late pregnancies would still be possible, but less likely depending on the other girls in your fam. Also would fix the issue of "my older sisters both got a lot of kids but I didn't get any ". At some point it's YOUR turn :>
Are scores still (somewhat) normally distributed with this system? I assume it might be but with an average that is slowly moving up and the bell curve along with it? Or is it like 'stretching out' more and more (so more players with REALLY high scores and also more players with REALLY low scores)?
If it is normal: What if you distribute tool slots according to standard deviations (average & SD calculated for currently active players, or current leaderboard so past 24h)? The top 0.1% gets the most slots, then top 2.3%, then top 15.9%, etc.
It'd stop people from trying to game the system to get outrageous scores for practically unlimited tool slots, since they can't win THAT many by grinding it out.
And regarding playing more... I hear you on that.
I'm not sure what to do there.
One idea is to reduce the score gain from each subsequent game you play in a 24-hour period. But if you had played 10 games, and were considering number 11, that would be demotivating, right?
I kind of like this idea. I feel a high spot on the leaderboard should be possible for both those with a lot of time and those without. Someone in a diff topic mentioned a daily/weekly cap on added points, but I feel that'd be too strict maybe. Slowly getting less and less might make more sense. You CAN still grind, but it gets harder along the way. This allows for other people to 'catch up' a little with fewer games played.
As for your question:
Depends on your motivation to play 10 games in the first place. Doing it just to raise your score? Yeah, it might feel useless at some point. Doing it just cuz you're having fun with the game? It really doesn't matter.
The thing is that you can also look at it from the other side. A player who generally only plays 1 game (cuz no chance of leaderboard position anyway) may realise playing 1 more can greatly increase their potential on the leaderboard, meaning for them it could actually be MORE motivating. (Or, repeating what I just said, depending on their motivation it could possibly not matter at all, so their behaviour is unaffected.)
I actually find it an interesing mechanic in terms of human behaviour. The player who plays a lot already may play less (playing 10 games instead of 11, so you only get 91% of the time they would invest otherwise), but the player who plays few may play more (2 games instead of 1, so 200% of theirs!).
Questions: Which player does this change really affect (i.e. who cares about their score, is it everyone or just the ones high on the leaderboard)? Which player are there more of? Does it matter losing some hours of gameplay from committed players if you may gain more in return from people who don't play as much? Do you want to hold on to the committed players, or increase the playtime of those who aren't quite there yet?
Use lasso on person to capture them, then lead them with u (on the same tile I suppose)
I think two-way cursing would be good as well. Some people curse wayyyy too much.
I too am not a native English speaker (although fairly fluent) and had the language issue for a little bit. One of the words I remember not knowing was 'adze', but I learned what it was by hovering over items. The game taught me new words like that a few times.
My advice for this issue: if you don't know a certain word and there's wayyyyy too many items on screen to check, ask people "do we have an adze?" or "where is the adze?". They'll either bring it to you, or point you to where it is. Helps narrow it down a little so you don't have to waste time looking at every item or going to onetech to figure out wtf that thing is.
Funny thing is: rn I know the English word for adze cuz of OHOL, but actually have no clue what to call it in Dutch cuz it's not a common item (looked it up btw, it's 'dissel')
I think the overloaded feeling doesn't stem from having multiple babies at the same time (unless there's like 5 or something), but because of constantly having to take care of a baby. You can't get anything done like that.
If I'd get 3 babies, I'd much rather have them all at the same time than after each other. Basically: take care of 3 the babies for 3 minutes, then have 6 minutes of 'free' play time, instead of having 1 baby for 9 minutes straight. Those 6 minutes are very valuable to me. Nothing worse than having to take care of babies from 14 to 40 without a break to do what YOU want to do.
I personally do take care of all the babies if this happens (though I feel like there's no time to bond with my 3 y/o or take care of them if another baby pops out immediately), but this is exactly why some mothers ditch their babies at nurseries for other women to babysit, cuz they value the time more than they do the kid.
Only exception is early towns when there's little food to survive, cuz having multiple babies drains pips FAST.
Jason, will you do something to help people who can't play as much reach the top of the leaderboard? This wasn't an issue before since scores were capped, but with this system...
Iif scores for an experienced player go up on average , the player that gets to play the most games will have the highest score. It's kind of demotivating for anyone who doesn't have that much time to put into the game.
If I notice my mom is old I'll definitely follow my 'F' up with O L D / OL D to make sure they realise I'm not just spamming F
My fav tho was when I did that and then mom said 'fold?' and I was like
NO
UR
OL
D
Jason posted about how the new scores are generated here: https://onehouronelife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=8429
Or when you can only say one letter and are trying to tell people that the fire is going out so you hump the fire and say
F
I-[gets food shoved in face]
Impossible game tbh smh
Jason changed it to compare to average age, not current fitness score. Since 60 is older than you get on average, you get + points.
For kids it compares to THEIR average age as well, so if they do better than usual, you get +. If they do worse, you get -. It removes some of the luck-factor when it comes to getting a noob or veteran as a kid.
I like the idea of having diff stakes as auto-stakes. Maybe you can make them with a yew shaft instead of straight shaft? Add a colour change to make te difference more obvious.
Lock this pls @mods
jasonrohrer wrote:But where are my oriented walls?
I'm wondering... with the auto-orienting fence code working pretty well.... should it be applied to walls too?
I think the reason there are no oriented walls in this town is because some people (fug included) prefer the look of east-west walls, not because it's hard to orient walls. They're more chunky and you can't use the empty space anyways, so might as well fill it up with wall.
Orienting walls is super easy and I really doubt that it's a problem to anyone.
Personally whenever I build something I always use all three wall types, I'm not a fan of the east-west wall look. Even when building plaster buildings when it's the 'correct' decision to build east-west walls, I'll build Jason-intended walls instead.
Same here, I prefer using all three types
The east-west walls look like you could walk between em if placed above each other. You can't, but it feels like you can (knowing they're not that thicc).
Have you experienced any problems with auto-orienting fences?
I don't think you can really prevent this but:
Build property fence
o <- me
+----------+

+----------+
put down my property fence sticks on the floor cuz I'm done, but instead it does this
| ö <- me (annoyed)
+----+-----+

+----------+
Man those kind of walls where they go [diamond] [straight] [straight] [diamond] [straight] [straight] [diamond] for no real reason but aesthetics are my fav.
Auto orienting is fine, but leaving the possibility to be creative is even better. Hitting the stakes again makes sense, people who want to build quickly can just use the auto option but creative builders can put a little more effort in.
What kind of sprite would you use for the auto-stakes though? It'd have to stand out and not seem like this is the shape you'll put down as is the case for the other options.
Yes to interracial kids, but not as a percentage. There would have to be a father involved, i.e., this can only happen if the mom actually met a guy w/ a diff skintone (been within a certain amount of tiles from each other? talked to each other?)
I do think this requires a loooot of coding though
IDK, I think specialty crafted novelty items outside of just biome-locked essential resources would be a great personal incentive for individuals to trade. "Hey, that's a sweet backpack. Trade you a tattoo for it..."
Making tattoos available to everyone would take the awe out of it. If you see a white guy with a tattoo, you know he has some stories to tell.
I also like the idea of requiring some biome-locked resources to make specialty novelty items. Salt, sand, sulfur, snow, mango leaves, tomatoes, fish bones, snake skins, seal furs...
Maybe introduce walrus in the ice biome, and then gingers could make horned helmets (not a real thing, I know) with their tusks. I'd walk through hell in a gasoline suit to get a horned helmet.
This!
Brown people: tattoos
Black people: coloured clothing
Ginger people: horned helmets
Pale people: bone piercings (which would be a certain skill the rest don't have, since pales don't have a biome)
But yeah, they'd all have to be able to do these completely by themselves- no outsiders needed.
See someone with a tattoo/piercing/item they shouldn't have based on their skintone? They may have a story to tell!
There's definitely people who like to teach- I'm one of them! I always try to tell people what needs to be done and if they want to learn something I'm there to help them out ('follow after me'-style, if I have the tool slots).
I also feel the statement 'We were never taught' isn't true for everyone at all, since I learned a lot in game by having people show or tell me how it's done. Nobody will teach you if you don't ask, but if you do, a lot of them WILL.
The only thing I disagree to in your message, however, is that 'it only takes a minute to teach'. Teaching generally takes a lot of effort, with clumsy kids trying to figure out whether they need to left or right click something, trying it in the wrong spot, etc. A lot of things (even planting carrots) also require extra knowledge beyond what's obvious on onetech, in this case that it's necessary to harvest them before they grow seeds but also that you need to keep some of those seeds to plant more later. Even simple things require some extra explanation. Don't expect just anyone to be able to teach you at any time, they're often busy- ask someone else.
Something that helps is asking people to teach you something they're currently doing, or just watching them while they do it. Some people find it hard to drop whatever they're doing to help out a newer player. Another piece of advice: ask your mom. She's more likely to care than any other player.
Anyway, that's the NORMAL situation.
Right now, however, there are so many newer players that a lot of veterans are working really hard to keep the town alive and therefore don't have a lot of time to teach, nor talk to you. The added stress of an entire village depending on THEIR skill can also get people a bit annoyed. Give it a few days, and I'm sure you'll find some people ready to teach!
Kaveh wrote:Bring another fence kit with you next time to put next to the deep well, remove it when the well is empty and take it to the next well/set of ponds.
Deep wells regenerate water (slowly... it's two and a half hours/some percentage calculations... though that could help out a few generations down the line in principle). Can the water regenerate if you remove the stanchion kit? Also, where you say fence kit, I think you mean stanchion kit (bucket on top of a fence kit).
Well so what I mean is
1. Dig well, bring fence kit to build fence for the horse next to it (it's true you can lock it in a biome, but it's just easier to have it on a fence, you'll need the fence kit later anyway)
2. Bring back a bunch of water
3. When the shallow well is empty, use mallet + shovel on the fence next to it
4. Add one of your buckets to the fence kit, then put it on top of the well
5. Bring back a bunch of water & bring a new fence kit as a fence next to the deep well
6. Once the deep well runs out, remove the fence again and place it next to the next shallow well (i.e. loop back to 1)
etc.
Like this you always have a stanchion kit with you, as long as you make a new bucket whenever you use one to build a deep well. You never remove the stanchion kit you put on top of the well, just the fence kit you put next to it (so ye I did mean fence kit, not stanchion kit).
Babyshook? Nah.
Milkshake.
sigmen4020 wrote:All that would have to be done to make it possible for browns to do it alone would be just allowing us to make rust with regular water. Maybe as a downside you could make it take longer so you have to wait to get rust instead of getting it instantly. Making it possible for them to do it on their own, while having it be optimal to do it with gingers.
That might help browns, but everyone else would still be unable to get tattoos. I'd really like to see tattooing be an option in ALL villages.
[...]
I disagree, I actually like it as a brown-only thing (to have something special for that skin tone). Others can get tattooed but only if provided w/ the materials by a brown person. Would be cool if the other people can do something too though. Brown people can tattoo, black people have coloured clothing cuz of their direct access to alum. What about bone piercings for another skin tone?
Although I agree tattoos should be special and not too easy to make, I thought the idea was this being something family-specific. Outsiders could get tattoos, but it'd be more of a tribe-thing than anything. Requiring the help from another family seems... odd.
