Then had a kid which put me low on food, the second I moved away it grew and some moron picked it before it fruited. Fuck that town, they lost a grinder lol.

Every one says "no one farms milkweed."  Well this is why no one does.  People steal your rope for buckets and make lassos.  People steal your thread for rope so they can make clothes.  Even if you have sheep right there.  Someone makes a stone hoe even though you have steel ones.

I will only plant milkweed if I have a backpack or worst case a nice hiding tree.

What I like about your idea, besides food variety and bonuses, is the fact that it can imply a time of gathering for the members of the community, which not only can be fun in itself, but also permits to exchange about what is needed at that time and give directions in order to improve the settlement. That is something that really lacks in the game, I think.

What? As smiths, you need to take requests from town. If someone ask you to mKe a hoe and you are making it, then it's great right? Why would you wanna kill them for this bening non-issue? This... bening event?

At least, he didnt took the freaking forge as other would do.

Exactly, I don't sit by the forge being useless, so I have no idea if you are already working on a hoe.  Plus, if we have the iron and the rest of the tools are secure, we should have multiple hoes.

Oh one thing that could maybe help you or other new players.  Do not feel bad eating pie, stew, omelettes, or burritos once you are older.  Wait until you have a large health bar and are down to 3-7 pips, because these foods will likely fill you the whole way with one bite.  Complex foods have better yields (cost less soil/iron/water per pip), so if they are available you are actually helping your town more by eating them rather than if you just munch on berries/carrots.

Zenny rog, indoor closed with walls and doors IS warmer than outside.

I saw this in the tutorial... but I thought it was due to there being a fire inside the building?  Also if you shut the door and stand one tile just outside of it, its slightly warmer there too, warmer than when the door is open.  I literally have no idea how this works.

Also- if it does buffer you, its only warmer and never cooler?

#32 Re: Main Forum » Ideas For Better Buildings » 2018-07-13 04:35:48

Floors need to buffer temperature so that "indoors" is slightly warmer or cooler than outside.  That would make people want to build buildings to they can work inside of them.  This alone would add a huge motivation to build.

Cheaper walls and floors would be great too.  Dirt floors/ roads in particular would be awesome.

In the ownership thread https://onehouronelife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=2543 Jason comments that maybe construction might be a bit too hard.  So maybe there's hope for us to get buildings as a more commonplace thing?

#33 Re: Main Forum » What is the best thing for me to do as a new player? » 2018-07-13 04:01:58

You should first learn how to farm and basically keep yourself alive.

After you know the basics, learn compost.  Compost is the lifeline of the city.  Baking and rabbit hunting are other great middle-tier professions.  Rabbit hunting is a great fallback when you don't know what to do.  No matter your city, rich or poor, rabbit hunting always helps.

I was Danielle River http://lineage.onehouronelife.com/serve … &id=528420 .  I ran away from my eve mom (sry mom) to find a better spot and settled on what I though was an okay spot.  Okay, not great.  My daughter Caci (Cactus) was awesome so I let her take the lead and did a bunch of foraging.  During that I found my little brother who thought the rest of the family was dead, he relocated to our camp (bro you the best).  Later when I was foraging I realized that south of the town was 20+ ponds.  No lie.  I have NEVER seen that many ponds.  "River" indeed.  I spend my later years gathering eggs trip after trip... there were so many they started to re-spawn as a was gathering.

I told my grandchildren "this is the promised land."  It was.

The lineage lived 15 gens... I'm sad it didn't go longer (I wanted to visit again) but that's still not bad.  Was anyone there later on?  What was it like?

Carrots are vastly worse than berries.

Another method:
Make and advertise other food sources.  People are going to "run for berries" when they are hungry because its reliable.  Make popcorn for children and elders as a cheaper alternative to berries.

Implemented this today, but it's not live yet.

Anyone can name any unnamed baby by picking them up.  This causes them to take the namer's last name, like adoption in real life.

If a baby gets past age 5 with no name, any nearby person can name them.  If you say, "YOU ARE JARED," the closest unnamed person (closer than 20 tiles away) becomes JARED.  These people NEVER have a last name.  They don't take the namer's last name.

I squee'd when I read this.  It seriously makes me sooooo happy.  Adopting kids is so great... Having someone survive nameless in the wilderness then return to town and be named... so good.

If someone wheeled around a cart of pies and communicated what every one needs (baker needs more mutton pls feed sheep, we need a third hoe for the far farm, need an iron scout volunteer, oh iron scout? here's an f-ing pack so you don't starve) it would be great.  Seriously, I am down to be ruled if we could get any level of coordination and organization.

Going is still going strong.  It was weird... the village was well maintained and had a shit ton of compost.  Very nice considering the size.

Hi friend.  I have no idea if you had a name, I never checked.

I found you just as you were ascending from the tutorial.  Together we found a great stash of items and many dead.  I said I wanted to create a cart and I went to hunt a goose.  I know that you were older than I.  I worried you'd be gone when I came back and you were.  I cooked the goose on the hot coals you left.  GG friend GG.

Name on object, why not but restrictions on object seems to me stupid, as jason said, lock them up. It was frustrating to me when I didn't know how to lock things, I just hidded my things behind trees. Now with a key in my back pack I have a personal chest or room in the middle of the village. This is very tedious but that is way to do.

Just out of curiosity, what do you do with the key when you get old?  I've never inherited a key, but I imagine if more people do this we could have the equivalent of "lockers".

Backpacks are first in first out right?  You can't access the bottom of your bag without dumping it all, right?  How do you store your key?  What sort of stuff do you put inside the locker?

jasonrohrer wrote:

I did give you locks, doors, and walls for this reason.

As it is, people just run around asking who has the key.  But chances are the person who has the key died two generations ago and hid it behind a tree for their next life neutral

Having higher tech will probably help with this.  I can imagine a society where everyone has a backpack so keys can pass more naturally between gens, but it still doesn't solve the communication problem.  If the bakery is empty I have no idea if the baker is getting supplies or if they are 3 gens dead and I should start baking.

jasonrohrer wrote:

Seems like you're suggesting something looser... like maybe automatic labels that aren't enforced?  But what would that do, really?

I wouldn't want it to be automatic.  Tim should have to claim his axe.

What this would do solve is the communication problem (assuming it decayed so it becomes unclaimed).  Oh X claimed the hoe, so someone is farming.  Oh no one has claimed the forge, I should forge.

That's the idea anyway.  It would only work if people used/ respected it to some degree.  I'm not sure if it would really work.

#46 Re: Main Forum » Ownership » 2018-07-04 23:43:05

I think this would be valuable.  I feel like I usually look around for something to do (spoilers, its always compost, there is never enough dirt) then I have to do all the jobs leading up to that job.  It would be cool if someone "owned" the sheep pen as in feed and sheared sheep.  Maybe made clothes.  Then if I was the compost person I could just collect the dung that's already there.  The baker could just collect the mutton.

How could we make it easier to say "my bakery" "my house" "my job"?  I'm imaging some sort of sign, but it needs to decay.  Tim the Lumberjack could have gotten boar-gored on his last trip, so we need to know that the axe and the responsibilities should pass to someone else.  I really don't know if it would be possible to do that in this game.  Maybe you could etch your name on certain objects and then the mouse-over would say "Tim's axe"?  And if Tim hadn't touched the axe in 10 minutes the etching would go away?

I really don't know the solution... but I think its worth thinking about.

#47 Re: Main Forum » What are the things that will make you suicide the fastest? » 2018-07-04 22:52:10

I rarely suicide.  But once I saw an eve (my mom) try to pick a cactus fruit with a sharp stone and I just noped right out of there.

I do lose a lot of motivation when a see a new camp not on the desert.  Its just a lot more food to go through.  I know there's a chance we will make it, its not impossible.  It just bums me out.

Giant berry farms aren't so bad, at least you can go to the far side (there is always a far side) and pick compost berries there.

Once I almost suicided because the town was so big and I didn't know what to do.  But it turned out great because I discovered building.

Yeah this is a good point.  You are just categorizing people.  What the categories mean is up to you.

I don't think there's enough people that marking a specific person wouldn't be useful.  If someone plays a lot and you do too I bet you see each other more often than you realize.  And hey, with this, you could find out....  I am liking this direction less and less.... seems like we are getting a weak "friends list" feature.

Edit:  Jason beat me too it.  Go for the new plan Jason.  Its "good enough."  We should see how it works in the wild.

#49 Re: Main Forum » Current idea for cursing/blessing » 2018-07-04 14:44:22

Although individual blocks could work, when I block someone they are now someone else's problem.  Probably some noobs.  They will spawn as an eve and all their babies will be noobs who haven't encountered them yet.  It could be a good redemption for them, but probably a bad time for the noobs (maybe they are the kind of player who names their kids "bitchface" or whatever).

There's also the issues of individual blocks not wearing off (assuming they don't).  That person my well be banished from society for a while, maybe indefinitely.

Yeah maybe the individual speech bubble thing is better than any sort of matchmaking mechanic.  I would like two levels of curse though still.  People make mistakes on both sides of the murder mystery drama, so having the white-on-black normal curse and the red-on-black multi-curse would be a good way to flag suspicious vs avoid as all costs.
