i also didn't realize it was 1 1/2 hours play time as opposed to real time. That does explain a lot. I don't really think how much plays in another lineage is relevant, what's relevant is that they aren't straight back in the same town with the same people.

#27 Re: Main Forum » Surviving a serial killer » 2019-03-17 20:37:40

yeah in my experience if i stay out of it it's fine, unless they're really determined to kill the line.

there's almost always someone who wants to be the hero.

i mean, i suppose one could get the amount needed to maintain a necessary amount of compost from wild berries with some discipline

#29 Re: Main Forum » New griefer weapon: Graves » 2019-03-17 17:13:05

the basket thing is a confirmed bug. I havn't tried to use a horsecart since the update.

And Frag, you aren't off the hook as our child-raising champion yet...  in the latest iteration of Whatever's *lifetime* player stats you have a kids/grandkids of 6.3/4.4, while I have a 4.6/4.5.

But Grim and Aurora are both higher, too.  And Whatever is still finding ways to improve his formula. Sooo... anything could happen!

Now we know we can measure these stats, it'll be interesting to see how things play out in the coming months.  I'd sure be interested in monthly updates.   I love that there is finally a way to compare how good we are at babyraising.  smile

I was feeling guilty about my hubris as the compared player base increased, though my pride was mostly fromm shock, as I had thought i was doing quite poorly as far as things go, then suddenly had a glorious number compared to the other people shown.

also though honestly I wasn't playing for much of the "Desert Eden" and was slow to adopt desert camps when i came back, and often ran off to start my own camps that were on desert, and then there was the big temp update...so i wasn't really playing at ideal times or styles for the most children in some ways, but none of us were playing for stats, so i'm sure everyone has a variable that would theoretically pump their numbers.

Edit: Aurora's went from 1.7 to 5.5 because of methods being changed. So, I don't know what to take from any of these numbers. I mean, that is really, really extreme. Though, it being Aurora, fk knows what she's doing that isn't like how the rest of us play.

#31 Re: Bug Discussion » Squash seeds vanish » 2019-03-17 02:26:33

yeah that confused me too, though i figured it out by squash #2.

There were 3 squash leaves sitting there when I needed squash for stew though, so I was sure something was wrong haha

I also got three seeds off a squash, which was good, cause i didn't get any seeds of the first one.

I had seen the update had "plate of squash with seeds" which it never said, so it made it kind of easy to figure out.

It's not the most intuitive thing, but also not difficult at all to teach, and squash seeds are way less scarce now.

#32 Re: Main Forum » antking's bad idea (which should be implamented) » 2019-03-17 02:23:18

it's true that we need more diversity of everything, but the biggest thing that could be done to balance the food now is that only shorn sheep gives dung, instead of lamb growing up.

Granted, i guess that makes compost require more iron use, and it would make wool clothes cheaper, but they are overpriced now.

#33 Re: Main Forum » Me and other eight eves spawned in a huge town » 2019-03-17 02:05:19

this caused an absolutely crazy population pattern. I was born into the big town and decided i didn't want to do there so i did a rare /die

I was born in a small village with a lot of problems 1.7 from my home marker, the waterloo family, and when it became clear there were no girls, I began to travel to the man village. 400 tiles away I found 4th-6th cousins. I continued to travel, trying to see how things were between there and home, and i unfortunately hit a bore, amazing ending up right near my niece, after the nearest person i had see in family since leaving was like a 4th cousin three times removed. presumably another traveller dying at the same spot, which i crazy because it was 500 tiles away from home

There was another small dead camp between mine and the live camp I found, very strange.

#34 Re: Main Forum » Me and other eight eves spawned in a huge town » 2019-03-16 20:17:25

do you think the center of the spiral landed on it after a reset? That's the only thing I could imagine, but I thought the spiral was supposed to totally move to a new location each time.

#35 Re: Main Forum » we have new emots! » 2019-03-16 16:47:53

thank you!

Not that it needs to be today's fix, but seriously, bowl of roasted squash seeds smile

it is easy to forget that you don't actually play this game all that much, spending so much time making it. And presumably when you do play you're usually checking specific functionality, not like, "Oh, i'll make stew for my village"

#36 Re: Main Forum » we have new emots! » 2019-03-16 16:16:22

oh, and that's to disassemble knives, that makes more sense actually. I'm really bad at reading onetech for some reason, i strongly prefer the wiki lol

#37 Re: Main Forum » PLAYER STATS + tools » 2019-03-16 16:12:25

I'm confused about the hour numbers, because i know i havn't played that much since coming back in January, and had well over 100 hours before coming back. Oh well.

Though I realize now these start April 1, and my forum registration date is March 30. I did play a ton of this in the first days i had it and then my busy season hit in no time lol

Definitely.
Or maybe squash seeds could be changed.
As in, having a way to get more than just one seed per squash you grow.
I can't think of any other crop in the game that doesn't have multiplicative seeding (as in getting more seeds than you initially planted).

Yeah and as i've pointed out, it's absurd for squash, you should be able to plant a bunch and still roast the bowl and eat the seeds. One squash can have like 100s of viable seeds.

Just looked at onetech, i don't see any downside to needing a hammer to make a knife, anyone who should be making a knife can do that easily.

the true question is. how long did it take you to move from turn based to being able to not have an anxiety attack at the thought of playing a grand strategy strategy game (not a RTS) with real time mechanics?

I player Crusader Kings on top speed and pause when I do things big_smile

And wow Blue Diamond!

Part of why i was so surprised when i was initially the highest one is that I also don't play in a way that would be conducive to getting the highest kids.

For one thing, i was gone for most of desert Eden, so I was around for early game, and then even in Desert Eden i wasn't staying in a lot of those camps, and kids would suicide because I wasn't on a desert, plus the lower fertility of it all.

i run off to start new camps a lot still, which causes fewer children to stay, and makes their lives somewhat harder.

i'm still glad to be on the higher end, even if some of you all are doing much better. It made absolutely no sense that my playstyle would have left me the champ of grandkids numbers. So this is all less confounding now smile

#41 Re: Main Forum » An apology and a gloat » 2019-03-15 23:15:34

yeah I'm amazed at how you're doing so well! A few people are actually doing better than me, now that more have been added, but i clearly am still in the upper tier.

#42 Re: Main Forum » PLAYER STATS + tools » 2019-03-15 23:05:18

what changed about kids per life since yesterday? Mine went down to 3.08 from 3.33 and I had a single female game with 3 grandkids, and some other people's went up.

I'm actually really curious about how multi-life is playing to have equal kids and grandkids when no one else does, and to have such a high average survival age.

Also Grim's numbers are crazy. It never made sense to me that I could have been the top since  i have such bad luck with survival, though i still don't understand how my numbers went down since the last time, as I was average higher than 3.3 grandkids in recent games.

It for sure makes sense that other people have more grandkids per kid than I do, since I will keep all of them but often offer them little care once off the tit.

Of course, towns will die out way before due griefers, fertility issues, lack of organisation, inexperienced players.
The cap will only rise as we rise up the tech tree I predict.

But technically you can keep a town going by repopulating it with another lineage if it dies out. I sure did a few times.

Intentionally by mapping, or running into it on accident?

#44 Re: Main Forum » Open later: Top cap for yum » 2019-03-15 19:15:22

have you witnessed a town truly running out of iron, and not having the ability to make a horsecart to find more due to lack of tools? i never have, but of course iron is useless if they're dead by the time you get back from the run. Most civs I see die have iron around.

But, with iron being non-renewable, it is a theoretical hard cap, I'm yet to fail to be able to collect a full load of iron in half a lifetime with a horsecart, and 12 tools last a while. Even just someone on a horse with a backpack could get enough iron to at least get production going again, you just ride until you find new spawn.

I've seen this and it's helpful, though it's not necessarily worth it at the expense of chasing a horse all over the badlands and risking a wolf attack.

#46 Re: Main Forum » PLAYER STATS + tools » 2019-03-15 17:57:18

well, i'm not playing FOR stats, i honestly didn't even realize these statistics were being saved. But grandchildren was broadly how i was measuring my success as a female player anyway, so i feel pretty damn good about my numbers being high, though also want to figure out how to help other people who want to do better at it.

I'm still wrapping my head around how low the grandkid numbers are, because it explains a hell of a lot that had been confusing me for a long time, in terms of why these civs are dying and shit.

Some of this is going to be really basic, but with the amount of ground iron, perceived scarcity, number of veins out there, etc, it's clear a limited number of us do iron runs.

1) Always, always, always set a home marker.

2) Find a backpack if possible, it isn't necessary, but is extremely useful. Clothes also make it easier. if you say you're going on an iron run, an elderly person will probably give you clothes over an infant that may or may not be useless.

3) Chain your yum a bit with things you can't find in the wilds, eat some popcorn, sauerkraut, etc. If you're going to be gone a long time, wasting a bit of food for your yum chain isn't a big deal. Even eating a corn is fine in this scenario, the advantages of getting a 15 yum chain while doing this are huge [anyone who thinks that isn't worth it to get 14-15 iron for a village can bite me]

4) pack a piece of bread and a pie flavor you havent ate yet.

5) Grab a horse and cart if at all possible. They aren't that expensive, so if you die and lose one in the wilds it isn't a huge deal compared to the possible rewards. If there's already iron and no horses, consider making one. Though i've had successful iron expeditions just dragging a cart. If you have the time, don't take any baskets, make them in the wilds

6) Choose a direction to leave town. You can ask at the smith if they know what direction people have gone for iron. they usually won't. Tell them what direction you intend to go.

7) Follow the biome edges, it allows you to see way more biomes. Avoid going through the desert, as rattlesnakes will tip your horsecart. Usually, the very very near iron is picked out close enough this matters more once you've reached 250 or more tiles.

8) If you're not already carrying one, make a sharp stone at the first opportunity. You can carry a knife if you wish, but it has no extra applications in the wild, and you can later abandon a sharp stone for a ground iron. Your return trip will be surprisingly fast. [so you won't need a sharp stone for foraging]

9) make baskets at the first swamp. Be careful of boars. Remember you need to be hopping on and off of this horse all the time. If you can find a bunch of reeds in one place it's way easier, it kind of cages your horse in and l keeps the boar out.

10) Collect foods you need for yum along the way as you see them

11) Watch the spawn patterns. This is a double edged sword, because you're also looking for ruins to loot, but anywhere that is new spawn will have ground iron. it is sometimes that case that straight north of your camp has been seen, but 50 tiles to one side is new spawn. This means iron is unpicked. You'll be amazed how close by there is new spawn, if you don't do this often.

12) Once you get to a new Badland, make a reasonable effort to search the whole thing, unless it appears picked out and you want to continue onward. Badlands are dangerous, and horses run away. This was my biggest initial problem. To avoid danger and awkwardness you want to collect iron in a very specific way. Get off of the horse, preferably standing on the iron or something else, swap it with the basket, set the iron down in basket, set it back in, and hop on the horse. if you take any longer or are not on a tile, a wolf can kill you at any time, and chasing the horse over the badlands is never fun. It's crucial that this is done quickly and safely.

13) Note any iron veins. Do not take up space with a stanchion kit and a pick unless you know where they are. Remember, things can be hard to find again in this game. There's not a good reason to set up mines until ground iron is picked out. But if it is picked out and veins are available, take your current load home, and head back out with a pick and a stanchion kit. Some nice individuals leave stanchion kits next to horse carts, but they are also not difficult to make, if there is carpentry tools and a rope available.

14) If the iron pickings are decent, continue until you have a near full load. Hopefully, the remains of a pie are the only thing in your pack, so you can collect 15 iron. One could abandon the pie- it's worth it for an iron- but i'd say better safe than sorry, even if you get home surprisingly quick and could easily live on gooseberries. If iron pickings are slim, go home on a different route with an under-full load, you may find the rest of it on the way home. Usually, at this point my yum chain has just broken, and i run home eating pie.

15) If you travel more than 1k, you've gone farther than is usually necessary, and should consider going home along a different route, where you will often pass by other iron. though if you've just gotten to new spawn, there's no reason to leave the trip underutilized. It may be more efficient to just run this far anyway, instead of stopping to inspect every nearer badlands.

16) Return to your village, usually to great praise and adulation. Report your findings and the location of veins to the smith, or to the people in the nursery. Note any useful identifiers, such as wild horses, abandoned village, biome edges, etc. or even consider stopping to pull down tree branches on your way back. i suppose leaving a note would be a good thing to do, but there's rarely paper and a pencil around.

17) if you're young enough and so inclined, do it again, choosing a direction based on your findings. If you found a good spot that you can easily return to that is over 1k, a horse goes there directly pretty damn fast, but be careful of snakes. [amazingly, the one time i hit a snake, there was a lasso right there...though three horses were trapped in a tiny desert biome, so they may have been put there by another player, and it wasn't a wild lasso...] If it was bad pickings, go another direction. it's not uncommon to find plenty of iron within 500 or so tiles even in a mature civ. If you start when you become old enough to take the horse cart, you have time for roughly three iron runs in your life.

18) Have fun and get annoyed by how bitchy people are about iron, given it's widespread availability. [Though ALWAYS recycle your tools, some people like me put a lot of work into gathering iron! it should at least serve a purpose, instead of just being wasted]

I hope people find this helpful, some of this is really obvious, but it's clear a limited number of us are doing the lion's share of long distance iron gathering, and that we can afford more tools than we're living with. I'm of the side that civilizations are not failing due to lack of iron, they're failing due to not going to get it (if that, i've been in a few situations where iron actually runs out in town). Even if you have to go 2k to find iron, that's not too time prohibitive, as long as you run straight there, as opposed to circling every biome for iron.

If your question is can you play the game you bought directly from Jason on steam the answer is yes, i believe he sent a download code or something.

The main download is still v58 and then waiting for the updates.

#49 Re: Main Forum » PLAYER STATS + tools » 2019-03-15 17:04:24

they're very interesting in a variety of ways.

One reason my numbers are high is that I still fundamentally view the purpose of the game to be continuing your family lines as long as possible, and i choose to keep almost all of my children.

i'm not sure if I'm contributing to future food crisis by having too many children in these scenarios, as a lot of people have always believed.

It would seem to me that my higher grandkid rate shows that is not a problem.  I also just really avoid violence, and almost never suicide. i also go on the side of remaining full, instead of worrying too much about food efficiency outside of yum. [i mean, I still try to make the most of things, but i can produce so much in a lifetime I worry the most about not dropping dead.]

I Also don't use the AWBZ mod,  which makes my survival rate somewhat more impressive. Though even when i'm the last male in a village, i often live out the rest of my life cleaning things up in case someone else finds the camp, or learning a new skill. Or sometimes just going out and searching for life, to see if there's anyone i can send to the dead camp to loot it.

The most amazing thing about this to me remains that i thought i was doing a terrible job of keeping grandkids alive and spreading family lines. No wonder these lines die out when some of the most experienced players are only having 1.5 grandkids per female life.

At the same time, i'm not really into advanced tech. i play to survive and raise children. so at least up to a point, other players are doing things which greatly benefit the overall camp's survival like making newcomen pumps. Though the upper tier of technology past that is mostly resource consuming amusements.

I really do wish there was a way to track iron collection, like how many irons you picked up more than 100 tiles from birth place.  Recently i've been yum chaining my way through fertility and then running off to try and complete an iron run. Managed to collect 12 for a 30th generation camp leaving at like 45 yesterday. Your yum being at 10 or 15 makes that way more feasible to do as an elderly person. As always, i was amazed at how much iron and new spawn was relatively close in the northern direction, though it wasn't 100% obvious I was at the family's original camp. Still, people were damn impressed to see an elderly lady get back with 12 iron haha

Haha i'm winning there too, however, a huge part of that is my not suiciding and avoiding violence.

Though i go into the wilds a lot, i probably have more animal deaths than a lot of people, though I've been remarkably lucky on that recently, so many times i'm jumped IRL when almost stepping on a wolf.
