Nice.
I guess in the future it might make sense to produce a batch of pies to take on a long journey somewhere, but as the game is now, if you can produce those pies, then you don't need to leave. And if you do need to leave, then just walk for ten minutes and you've found good land. There's no proper migration mechanic yet, but maybe Jason-God will introduce some kind of apocalyptic event or something.
Updated berry farming section.
Oh wow, that is awesome. Definitely incoporating this into my play style.
One thing I did realise from shepherding is it can’t possibly be sustainable. To feed a sheep to get a single ball of yarn you have to strip an entire berry bush into a bowl to make the feed. So unless someone has found an endless supply of water to farm berries or strips the bushes for miles around it’s going to take generations to knit a matching outfit
Both water and berries are renewable, so there's no problem there. And yeah, it will take generations to clothe everyone, but once the clothes are made, they're permanent.
There should be a rule that if you pick the last domestic gooseberry, you are responsible for watering it.
So it turns out farming berries is actually constructive and necessary, even if it is a risk to the soil. I'll update my farming guide thread.
Even when you can first feed yourself, you will be overeating unless you wait until you're almost starving, which is risky. It's more efficient for the mother to eat and then feed you. But then you risk having the mother not feed you because she thinks you can feed yourself. I usually take the former risk.
We should try to establish a clearly recognised pattern. We can't mark a plot as seed only, so we need some other way to help people recognise which one is for seeds. If we follow the "three to seed, four to feed" rule, then it makes sense to farm in rows of seven, leaving the leftmost for seeds. "three to seed", these three, "four to feed", the next four.
Belay that order colinmarc is buying him a copy. Bless this community
This dude Sandi in the discord is in Indonesia and can't use amazon, a credit card or send money to an overseas account. He's desperate to play. I would be happy to buy it for him if I could convince my wife to let me spend money on a game for a stranger on the internet...
But seriously, I'd chip in a buck no sweat. Is there something we can do for the poor man?
Gather water (without draining ponds). Gather berries in baskets. Bring branches to the forge.
They definitely regrow, so they are the best source of seeds. Depending on your farm itself is risky.
Or just never digging wild carrots.
If I'm not mistaken, the only way to put down something in tongs is to swap it with an object already on the ground. The same is true with a basket of fertile soil.
My only problem is when running through forests. God, that's a nightmare. Add a bear to the mix and you're in for some frustration.
No, it just means that as settlements get more developed and can sustain more people, there will be a higher chance of being born into it, since there will be more people there. Effectively the human population will start getting gathered into nodes, and if there is a low population on the server, like if there's a disconnect or people just go to bed or whatever, then one of those nodes might go out, meaning the next players will be born in one of the remaining nodes. Repeat until there's only one.
So they are in theory renewable, but if you leave them unwatered for too long, they will die.
To answer my question (since I found out inadvertantly) the second person is denied login.
And eventually, all children will be born into the same settlement/family line.
Since you're sending a path to the server, could you not just send a path to two squares to the <direction> until you let go of the key and then send a path to where you already are?
A tragic tale.
I was born into a small village with a well established farm, but it was over-crowded. Villagers were asking how to make fire. I saw someone try in vain to start a fire with a flint tipped drill. I tried to teach them their error, but I was but a babe and couldn't speak. So I as soon as I was able, I looked around for a fire bow. I found none, and also discovered that there was no milkweed. I knew this place was doomed.
I took a basket of berries and headed East. After a long trek, I found good land. There were signs of previous inhabitation, but nothing recent. I found a milkweed plant and harvested seeds from it, and went about turning it into a farm. I then discovered that I was on the outskirts of an even more well-established village, but one that was entirely deserted. I found a grave with a full set of fur and clothed myself. I replanted the carrot farm and watered it, then carried on expanding the milkweed farm. There were steel tools and piles of fur; everything in plenty!
But it would all go unutilised because I was a male, unable to bring new life. So in my last years, I loaded a backpack with carrots and headed west to my home village. I found a small girl and took her with me. She did not tell me she was hungry and when I tried to ask her, alas I found myself mute! (64 bit linux bug, sometimes can't type unless you're holding SHIFT, which I only figured out later). She died as I was unpacking a carrot from the backpack.
I went back to the village, and told a woman of age that there was life to be found to the east. Thankfully she believed me, and we headed off. But alas again! She was eaten by a bear. I returned to the village a third time, my age rapidly advancing and I was greeted with scorn. The remaining women thought I was evil, trying to destroy their village. I was sill mute, but my speech was returning slowly. After babbling some nonsense, I finally remembered how to speak, and I tried to tell them of the life to be found to the East. They still had no milkweed and no fire. I tried in vain to convince them.
They called me a bad old man. I gave them my clothes and they left me to die. The village where I was born and that I tried to save.
P.S. My real life daughter played after me and was born in the same village. Maybe I'll tell her about the village to the east.
Unless you make compost pits.
That mnemonic is brilliant!
I figured it out in the end but it seems keyboard input only works when you are holding SHIFT.
Biggest problem here is that if people choose when to procreate, players have to wait for someone to do that before they can play. Who's going to do that? This game has been in development for three years, so I'm pretty sure Jason has tried a few things and this system seems to work well for the most part.
Could you be more descriptive? Like, are you having trouble logging in? Purchasing the game? Using the controls? Crafting?
