I usually go the pouch route but it depends on resources, if clay and reeds are right there and milkweed isn't plentiful it's the way to go. If I'm an even populating a new area I basically run around with babies picking fruiting milkweed and living off the berries to the edge of the space.
the thing is ANY farming massively reduces food pressure on the wild berries, as long as you keep the carrots going. One clay bowl is definitely enough to keep you alive as you move forward. Also once you have a kiln and fire going pies are not too hard to make.

Ofc its enough. Its enough to loose all your progress.
It's pretty damn easy to find a new appropriate campsite with enough berries to live on til the carrots come in. All you need to do is dump soil down, plant some seeds, and water with the pouch you brought. Those items cover like the first 15 minutes of making a new camp- w/o kids

wow, how big did the civ get? I JUST noticed that on the home page
other than someone inexplicably being upset about the last name Trump i haven't seen any of these problems.
Also what are "privilege comments"
Btw, I definitely used the above-mentioned Greek proverb, though it is quite famous and relevant to this game so someone else could have.
The great British journalist and agrarian William Cobbett told a similar story, which was probably a fable and not a real story. Essentially, three younger men laughed at an old man for taking the time to plant and care for a tree, on the grounds that he would never have time to enjoy it, then all three of them died in various ways (war, drowned in the harbor, disease) and the old man was still alive to enjoy the fruit because he had been there taking care of the tree instead of getting himself killed seeking adventure.
That story also relates to this game lol
well, for one thing, i've twice spawned near other people since this happened. Once i was the baby of a feral eve, but a small camp with firemaking equipment and planted soil.
In a more recent game there was a corpse nearby of someone who had accomplished very little, but someone had been there. Even if the range is larger, camps and artifacts will be scattered around.
I am having a hell of a time getting kids to survive to adulthood. I don't know how so many people die.
I often live to 60 with no descendants left around, very frustrating.
I appreciate the updates, and the game being more "wild" is definitely a benefit.
Unfortunately, the server reset happened right when I was finally a woman spawned to an eve and we had a good camp going that would have sustained, but of course i was barren cause the server was depopulating!
"A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in." - Greek proverb
knowing that, it makes it useful to continually plant them so if the line survives the hour they have continuous food.
somehow i only recently conceptualized the top one lol
I often survive naked in the wilderness with a baby. It's part of the fun.
Though spawn one min before babies could be good.
What is the domestic gooseberry respawn time? I was just at a camp (Weather) that was on the edge of starvation when i aged out because a high number of domestic gooseberries never respawned, and it was far from carrot seeds. (and of course, people weren't gathering them enough.
The food was pretty much picked out, though at least some more carrots were planted. i really want to know if they lived to see the domestic gooseberries respawn, because there were a bunch of them.
Also, harvest all of one plant at once and then harvest it so it respawns sooner! (Though of course, don't leave excess berries in baskets to age and disappear.)
yeah exactly, I meant near new areas someone has already been too there are already abandoned holes, which you wouldn't expect unless an area was populated enough to be overharvested.
oh and what do you mean "oc berry bushes"
i assume you just mean the wildgooseberries, but now I'm wondering if i'm missing something.
as much as I hate it this social experiment wouldn't really work without assholes like this guy ^
I'm so peaceable i'd probably just take off to live in the woods in the scenario.
Cactus fruit is a god send in terms of reducing food pressure It is renewable, hardy, and comes back rather quickly. Do not forget to harvest it frequently if you establish a camp near it. in a recent game i mostly lived on it while I trapped rabbits extensively- bringing much to the camp and living off a resource they barely noticed. Even when the camp nearly starved others didn't seem to notice the cactus fruit just to the north.
I don't know that there are any rules to remember, as it appears you can only harvest it when it's fruiting, and that it comes back sooner the sooner you harvest it, thus, fruiting cactus should always be harvested, similar to leaving milkweed on the ground. (I may be your mother if it's a new campsite and i run around with a baby picking milkweed and living off the farther out berries and cactuses while the children set up the camp.)
But remember, there is something i discovered in my attempted run to the end of the world (before i knew it was infinite, i spent about 50 minutes running north to see what would happen.)
Some things, such as rabbits, cactus fruit, and milkweed don't start their cycle until a player sees them. If you go somewhere and all of the milkweed is new, none of the cactuses have fruit, or most noticeably, none of the rabbit holes are family rabbit holes, you are in new territory. This is why we're seeing so many abandoned rabbit holes right after the apocalypse.
This means when you come to a new camp it is important to run around exploring the immediate area- for its own sake- so rabbits, milkweed, and cactus come into production. (I can't think of anything else this effects...it may have the effect of waking up the bears and wolves...)
i was the uncle in that family who did all the trapping and gathered the thread. i wasn't named, but i remember lazarus.
I actually stupidly died in that at age 7 after making the fire tools because i got too far away from food. Then after being abandoned once i spawned there again.
I was a son of Eve, it was cool having barely saved the colony from starvation then seeing it prosper. When i died people were clothed, there was a surplus of carrots, and they were ready to make pies and move on.
I remember you telling me about the respawn thing lol
it's kind of goofy that just cooked dough isn't a food by itself.
I think it should say just name, when it's a fresh grave. Or at the very least there should be an option to make a dogtag...but writing isn't a thing yet.
that's a good trick. I only just now thought to use sharp stones on firewood so it can be carried back to camp in baskets lol.
anyway, I often do pretty well. In the game I just played unfortunately all of my kids ended up starving, some as adults. I almost starved multiple times when I had to fan out to get berries. I at least left a small camp the next eve can survive. In this situation in the future i'm going to remember to designate a berry grabber, because running off to grab berries and barely stay alive was a big use of time. I ultimately started doing that when I still had a son alive, but I didn't see him again. It's possibly one of my children took off instead of dying, I only really saw the bones of a a couple of babies that weren't kept.
at the very least any half talented even can survive at my basic camp, as i left it with 4 planted berry bushes (and there were quite a few wild ones), fire making materials, and water containers. 0
omg THAT is what's going on with the backpack being difficult sometimes. I had not put together why that was an intermittent problem.
I think the server reset now. I made a nice farm with my mother, who named me Apple Pie. It was funny actually when I was old enough to look around we happened to be REALLY close to a camp.
Anyway, I didnt have any kids the whole time, and when I died at 60 it said connection lost.
Shame though, we made a nice little spot
that's weird cause it gave me another tiny update after I saw they were turned off.
I imagine at the very least we'll ultimately be able to fish the goose ponds or whatever.
I thought they were turned off! I had just finally got to the point of being able to move water and had raised 3 kids! (though I wasnt sure where either of my adult daughters were at the time.)
Also, a no relation was stealing my snare right when it happened.
do they never respawn?
