Just gonna add something that was brought up with my idea of factions being colored.

If you color all the things it might take too long for each color to associate with that job. I was getting pushback from trying to form a color distinction between two objects that we probably wouldn't even make often. And with tools and things used the most I think you would share that problem ten times harder.

#552 Re: Main Forum » What property do you find indispensable? » 2019-04-04 23:32:38

Fruitboots, but I'm a weirdo. If I dont have access to a knife I'm not going to go make one to get them, but if I have the knife then all the snakes are now footwear.

The real answer though is a comrade. I have had many lives where I have made a friend and we kick ass with all the village needs together. Also lives where we probably goofed a bit much, but never really hurt anyone else. I know I could always twin with someone on the discord, but finding that one time random unplanned connection that usually only lasts 20 or 30 mins is actually very satisfying.

The suggestion here is to make locks cheap and easy.

But what's your min time to make a 3x3 adobe house with a wooden door, from scratch?  And then a lock to go with it?  I'm thinking that it's at least 30 minutes, even for a skilled player.

If we have shovel 15 mins or less. If not then probably 30 yeah.

*edit

Of course there are always variables, but not as difficult as hauling rocks forsure.

* second edit

Didn't see the lock going with it. If there are steel tools a 3x3 can be built and locked in 30 mins yes

I got hundreds upon hundreds of hours on rust.

It doesn't translate into magic hats that give you special cheap recipes. It's a terrible idea.

Regarding the walls and the claiming, do you really want the game to devolve into a rust-like game? Do you want bases spread around the map with players getting in and out of their fortresses only to PvP right away not knowing if other players are friendly or just for whatever loot they happen to have? Is this your vision for this game?

I can go play rust at any time. It already exists on my steam library.

At first I was pretty quick to jump on board with that statement being out there..In evidence by my first comment being a bit brash but with more thinking I can see where he might be coming from.. and I apologize Jason.

There are probably elements of rust that can carry over to OHOL and fit.

But I do still think you are wrong about the hat idea and Rust being the best game.

I had really only touched Rust long ago kind of considered rust just to be a PVP game that had raid mechanics and scenarios. While there were environmental things in it, to call it having PVE elements was kinda a far stretch.. if you argue that it does have PVE then I also argue that the game Don't Starve has PVP because you can co-op and try to sabotage each other.

OHOL is PVP, PVE, MMO, and a Sociology experiment/experience all wrapped up into one and were just worried and dont want you to pigeonhole yourself into just a PVP category with some kind of switch.

That's really the starting point for any discussion about property in a multiplayer game.

It's also probably the greatest game created in the past 10 years.... maybe the greatest game ever.

Brendan Greene has.

I don't think that small communities share freely with each other, now or historically, ever.  I think that's a utopian myth.

What makes you so sure of this?  You should watch the opening sequence of the movie The Gods Must Be Crazy.   It showcases just such a society.  A primitive family-group-village, that has no sense of ownership, because everything in their life is found in nature, effectively unlimited.  Their lives are upended when a glass soda bottle is thrown from a plane flying overhead, and they find it.  They find it very useful, but it is the only one that exists in their world.   And it causes bad changes in their society.  The latter part about the bottle is scripted in the movie of course, but my understanding is that the lack of ownership was in fact true until relatively recently, when they were rounded up onto 'reservations' and could no longer continue their traditional ways of life.

Despite being scripted, I think the premise of the movie could hold true for the game.   There is no ownership right now because we depend on each other, and everything we have (aside from iron) is found in limitless quantity everywhere in the world.   Introduce unique resources that only one family can control, and you will have ownership.

THIS

Make the NEXT part of tech need TWO families to complete.

A family can only make one part of said tech. They need both families to put it together.

The first person that makes said resource in a family sets it for the whole family, and they can no longer make the other resource that is needed to complete the tech. They must find, cooperate, and coordinate with another family to progress.

It may be a small first step, but one step at a time though Jason. I just worry about you changing too much too suddenly trying to force results. I know there HAVE been these drastic changes in the past, but you let us learn it for awhile before you change it or something else. I guess I'm just saying don't hit us with two major changes in a row lol.

How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.

How do you tweak everything to meet your expectations, but not completely overhaul it, so you don't just end up somewhere else you need to then fix? One major change at a time.

I feel like a major cause of the problem is that it is incredibly difficult to keep track of family members. It's difficult to feel like part of a family if you don't know where or who your family members are. It's completely impractical for a mother to care for her child after the age of three because you would have to constantly follow them around in order to know where they are and if they need help.

I think that if you want people to be able to get attached to a family in only an hour, you would need to give some in-game help. Something like a part of the UI that tells you where your family members are, or alerts when someone is about to die. I think if you remind players that their family exists, it will make them care more. As it is, when someone isn't on the same screen as you, they might as well not exist.

I do think that with more diverse clothing it will be easier to distinguish your family members. When everyone looks different i can actually tell and say hello when its my son helping me at the bakery in the feather hat and fruitboot I gave him. I also get sad when I find my moms bones i would have never otherwise seen if it wasn't for her one red shoe sad

If you end up going this route, maybe go with three or four eves at start.

It can work both ways. There is a reason for uniforms in armies. They would see a non red messing with the towers and get you. The better way to do it would be to have your blues go battle so that everyone knows their target. Or be a double agent.

Im all for freedom of expression and not having one particular symbol or thing own an idea, but in reality it happens whether we want it to or not. If you went back in time and plucked an indan hindu wearing an indian swastika, and a man that had a hitler moustache before it was associated with him, and then dropped them into the middle of modern day Jerusalem they would have their teeth kicked in. Even though neither deserved it and were just placed in the worst situation possible.

If you are born into a family right now in OHOL where everyone was wearing dyed blue and all had a knife and a arrow in their backpack you would probably call it cop town. Would they actually be? Prob not haha but you still kinda jump there in you mind.

Yes made by skilled, but worn by all. All it takes is something to be associated with an idea for it to become a symbol. I will strongly disagree about always operating in secret. I have the pictures to prove that the endtowers and endstones can stay and be worked on in village. In plain sight. Most newbies will do whatever their mom tells them. Case in point is them trying to add to the endtowers without knowing how to. I've seen so many old people asking to be sacrificed for those towers that their mom started.

Can I suggwst gray/undyed cloaks for the neutral players?   I would like a way to make it clear that I want nothing to do with the drama unfolding around me.

Uniforms are very useful.   The trick is getting people to recognize and agree on the meaning.

Agreed, I mean we already have it to a minor degree with the blue dye and cop like patrolman.

However most of the wool you see never gets dyed, and most of those people that actually dye them just want some varieties in the village. Most people you see in dyed clothes didnt make them and usually loot them, but maybe if there was a reason to pass the colors down it would be beneficial.

I figured the cape will work almost in the same way where most of the time it wont get dyed anyway, but now there could be more reason for dyeing them.

I have not, because if this meta happens most of the time I would be neutral. I've had lives where I was persuaded for both sides. Some of my favorite moms were building endtowers and i didn't destroy them because they were actually great moms with a vision to pass down to their kids.

So jason wants conflict, and i don't blame him. If something isn't worth protecting or destroying, then there is stagnation. The stakes as they are now has made conflict happen, but mostly unorganized havoc.

I think I figured out a way to paint everything clearer and have some semblance of an ideology actually having an image. All without changing anything we dont already have (almost)..

The way I see it, we already have two factions in game now and just nobody realizes it.

The factions that already exist are:

Pro apocalypse
Anti apocalypse

But how can we distinguish these two groups?

My proposal is that we give them a color.

With the next update we will be given a variety of clothes, but the CLOAKS are what we should use to identify these said factions.

If you wear a red cloak you are in support of the apocalypse. If you wear a blue cloak you are anti apocalypse.

I think this meta change could spice things up and actually prove to organize people. You obviously dont have to join either faction, but actually being able to tell who wants which goal might be beneficial for everyone.

Your thoughts?

One more comment I think that in real life often wars are a function of the ruling class. Kings and presidents wage wars, ordinary people are only as invested as they can be taught to be by propaganda. So, in culture you need to have class before you have war.

We have crowns, but they don't have any power. And who wants to play the game and not be in the ruling class if you start that dynamic? For it to work you'd need a ton of people to play as "followers" and that isn't really appealing gameplay.

I think the most we might see are Hatfield's McCoy's type feuds. But a feud isn't a war. It's just escalating small scale violence over mostly nothing.

The sad fact is that most war is mostly small scale violence over nothing. Someone on discord linked me to a war over a bucket where two European territories in roman times had a war over a town bucket that was (and still is) on display.

Both sides dont even have to be in the same mentality or economic standings though.

There are soldiers that view fighting as a way of life and even after fighting still carry out the soldiers mentality and persona.

There are soldiers that are put into the situation and want nothing other than to leave it and stop it somehow.

Ive written and deleted my essay for this post like three times.. its too complicated to put into words.. so i guess i just keep it brief.

But jason we need a common goal other than just survival if you want to see something like that right now. You're seeing the anarchy mixed communism because the bored veterans looking for something to do are mixing in with lower skilled people that cant survive past 12 most lives.

The closest thing I think I personally saw almost match your expectations was the mega city two apocalypses ago. There was culture development between families (I remember everyone hated the pizza family lol) I had an experience of war over the apocalypse that I wrote a thread on. I wasn't even a participant in the battle but an onlooker. If that happened to me i can't imagine what other battles people might have went through..

Simple fix for the problem in my eyes in regards to this right now..

Make two factions. One that wants apocalypse and one that wants nothing other than keeping it from ever happening.

I personally clothe all the children even if I'm a male. Especially if there is an abundance of clothing. It has nothing to do with roleplay, but rather identifying everyone. If you actually recognize that person running around it gets easier to determine who's doing what, and where. I remember how someone looks rather than their name like 85% of the time.

No on number one

Maybe on number two

I feel like eliminating wild yum will kill eves chances at all and hurt people who have to get the far stuff like iron. Most yum at a middle chain with wild foods just because they're so far from everyone that they're available and can get a  free +4 from the land.

I've stated on here in the past that sign lettering is still one aspect of this game that I have yet to really dive into at all. I happened to end up in a town last night that had a blank sign, and plenty of letter stock around with nobody touching it. I decided what the hell, let's take a crack at this and see what I can make without really trying..

juck.jpg

I ended up making the letters J, U, C, and K with the one bowl of hot water I heated. I wasn't really trying to make any particular letters, just trying to see the basics of it.

Pretty pleased with myself I let it be and went on to trapping the out of jungle mosquitos killing half of the town.

After trapping the first group and going to work on the next I found out the sign had been changed to this..

jucx.jpg

I figured it might get changed due to not locking it. I went to try and trap the second group of mosquitos, but someone ended up taking both my baskets of adobe I was using, and I got to old to do it.

I later see from discord that the sign ended up being changed again.. but only this time

jason-sucx.png

I am still trying to wrap my head around how this happened with no coordination..

(also don't mind the endtower)
