Imagine if one server is all tutorials, and everyone on it would experience three seconds lag every time a new player started. That would be even worse, on so many accounts.

I think you have the right instinct here. Inserting a value shouldn’t take on the order of milliseconds. I would focus there first.

If it turns out that it’s huge effort to improve, I would go with reducing the number of inserts as a second approach. By making the DB block size configurable instead of single tile, you can try out 4x4, 8x8 etc... I’m sure that’s not done without its own effort, but there is the added gain that it’s an upgrade of your system from an engineering perspective (just don’t pick a fixed size - make it configurable, so you can change it easily ).

Nudity is becoming an obstacle for distributing the game on AppStore and Google Play sad

https://forum.onehouronelife.app/t/the- … nudity/160

This is really sad. I think the characters look better without nudity-filter, but I guess “the World” feels differently.

You should be able to play it, but I'm not sure you would get a nice even frame rate. You're welcome to try it out and see. If you report any bugs, please remember to mention the device though.

Send me your email and I'll sign you up.

We rolled out our Android beta on Google PlayStore on July 1st, US time (1 am July 2nd, CET). As we understood it, the app would be invisible unless you had the opt-in-link. This turned out to be a false assumption, which we realized earlier today after getting several emails from people.

We've now tried to pull it by making it unavailable in all countries, but there seems to be some delay before all their servers get the updated info. Why do we want to pull it? Because Google weirdly enough charges people full price for installing a beta, and that was not our intention. Instead, we are listing those who are interested as internal testers, so there is no money charge.

Anyway, it felt like a curious coincidence that more people suddenly found out about the game during the last three days, so maybe this contributed to some of that, who knows...

Until it’s actually going down again, let’s hope it’s not peaking at all. smile
What numbers are we talking about? According to the data you have shared before, it’s been coming in waves before too, right?

#58 Re: Main Forum » Current idea for cursing/blessing » 2018-07-04 04:54:49

I have to say I think the method proposed by Uncle Gus is the only really good one: every player who wants the offender gone grabs a blunt tool of their choice and starts whacking. The target player looses mobility if enough people join in. Whacks only count if there’s a chain of different players doing it in sequence (a bit like the yum bonus)

I would add: 1) let each whack detract one food pip, to speed things up, 2) death reason becomes “killed by angry mob”, 3) the number of people whacking is used to determine if the target player gets “punished ” in the next life/lives. Bigger mob -> longer punishment.

Why is this best? Because it adds to the gameplay drama while the person is alive, it isn’t dependent on knowing a name, it doesn’t rely on magic and it doubles as a defense against armed opponents.

My 2 cents.

Scratch that. Posted updated instructions in the forum: https://forum.onehouronelife.app/t/sign … -beta/28/3
The beta is live for both iOS and Android now.

#64 Re: Main Forum » OHOL for Mobile - Beta on iOS & Android Now!! » 2018-07-03 10:22:29

We have rolled out the beta on Google Play!!

To download, you need to become one of our "internal testers", and for that to happen we must register your email address (the one you use on Google Play). Send me your Google Play email address in a private message, and I will list you as an internal tester and then send you a different link to follow. We are limited to register at most 100 internal testers.

Looking forward to seeing you in the game!

I may be wrong, but to me the filter sounds like a patch rather than a good solution. How are inexperienced players supposed to know the names of the tools further up in the tech tree? And experienced players, do they need it?

On a mobile device there is no tab key, so we knew we had to do something differently anyway. We ended up with two different views of hints: Use and Create. The first one is what you have in the original game: given one item, you are shown all ways you can use it one step. The second, Create, shows how to make the item, also one step (at a time).

To take hatchet as the example, Create shows that a tied shaft plus a sharp stone produces the hatchet. Then the user can get hints for those and see how to make the tied shaft from a rope and a short shaft, or how to make a sharp stone from a stone and a big rock. And so on, recursively.

I think we were inspired by ryanb’s system (which is awesome, btw) but we wanted something less OP, which didn’t give the whole tech tree away at once.

If you’re interested I can make some screenshots to explain it better. Let me know.

Exciting news!

We have submitted the iOS beta to Apple for review, and as soon as they approve it we can make it available to you guys. Usually it only takes between a couple of hours and one day, so there's a chance that it will happen this very day.

If you haven't signed up for the iOS beta yet, do so now (by sending me your email address) so you can try it asap when it goes live.

We are starting the work of getting an Android beta out as well, but that won't be ready until sometime next week.

There is a landing page at onehouronelife.app and we have set up a Discourse forum for discussing the mobile version at forum.onehouronelife.app, so there will be no confusion with mobile bug reports, suggestions and so on. Please visit and join if you're interested. You will be the first visitors.

Hopefully, my next update will be that the beta has gone live...

How do we opt in for android beta? Email?

For now, just post that you’re interested in this thread. On iOS we must have email addresses, but on Android there’s a chance that we can just post an apk for downloading. If not, I’ll ask for your email later.

Looks like the iOS beta should go live in the first half of next week. We will then try to get an Android version out a few days after that. Stay tuned, and keep sending me your email addresses, so you can get the invite once the beta is live.

I guess we need to get plastic into the tech tree before we get to breast pumps. The future is bright.

I would love to help out with beta testing, I have an iPhone SE. But I’m not very tech-savvy. sad

It's not very complicated, but not self-evident either. Here are the steps:

1. Send me your email address. I will enter it into Apple's system on our side. The email address can be your Apple ID, but it doesn't have to be (according to Apple). You can send it privately using the 'Email' link below my user name.
2. Download a free app called TestFlight from the Appstore. Apple makes this app and uses it to distribute beta versions of other iOS apps. (Note that Apple requires that you are at least 13 years old to use TestFlight)

When we have the beta version ready, we will enable it for testing. The TestFlight server will then send invitation emails to all the email addresses we have given it.

3. When you get the email from TestFlight, open the email on your iOS device and follow the link. The TestFlight app will then open and will give you the choice to install One Hour One Life for Mobile.

Whenever we update the beta version, you will be able to download the new version by opening TestFlight and choosing Update for our app.
