Maybe the presence of people should generate heat as well.

#52 Re: Main Forum » Is Heat Working Intuitively for You? [OUTDATED] » 2018-10-03 07:02:53

After a period of being obsessed with making sure I was clothed I noticed I'm more often overheated than not which has made me pull back from the obsession.  The current meta sees most successful settlements being built in hotter areas which seems realistic to me.  So the most important time to be clothed is as an Eve, running around trying to find a good place to settle.  Otherwise, you're mostly in the desert where clothes are a detriment.  Yes, in a "city" you often move around colder biomes but it seems more trouble than its worth to be constantly putting on and taking off clothes.  Plus then people tend to steal 'em.  I guess you could just stay as much as possible in one part of the city...

Anyway, I'm not into nudism, so what I'd like to see is some hot weather friendly clothes--sarongs, saris, chest wraps for women (whatever you'd call a primitive bra I guess), thoabs (a long, dress-like cloth Bedouin men wear), etc.  Our civs have evolved out of cavemen clothes long ago...  Where's the cotton/linen?

"any free tile inside the pen is a starting point, any starting point needs to be blocked either by a wall or 5 bushes"

Ahh......   Got it.  that explains the cow crossing the bush into an open space after it.  If I had put something to block it behind the bush it wouldn't have gone.

I couldn't get to that section in the tutorial for some reason.  I tried.  I'll try again....

#55 Re: Main Forum » New sheep pen meta » 2018-10-01 08:22:58

Man I am not following your diagrams...  (1) How does the below not have open sides?

oooxooo
ooxcxoo
xxxoxxx
xooooox

(2) Or is the "..." meant to mean "the same but opposite symmetrically?"

(3) Also, could you explain the importance of diagonals?

I'm starting to understand...

Three last questions:

(4) is this architecture changing in an update soon?
(5) Do these work for sheep (probably more important)
(6) Can your diagrams be done with fences (two long shafts, adze, etc.)?

PEIN:

Here's what I did:
  oxoxo
  oxcxo
xxoooxx
xooooox
xooooox
xooooox
xxxxxxx

with the c being a berry bush.   The cow walked over the bush multiple times.

Oh we're definitely getting more griefers with Steam.  People will think this is some variation on Terraria, get frustrated with the learning curve and start griefing.  Not that I disagree with Jason's decision but it's going to spike the griefer level.

Regarding the learning curve, you just have to find a niche you like and play it for a while so it's memorized.  Then move onto the next niche.  It's probably best to learn the very basics for Eve play and if you extend that to learning smithing, even better since it's essential.  I started with berrying, then moved to compost, then to rabbit trapping/clothing production, then to shepherding and now I'm trying to figure out sheep pen architecture (but all I get is pein's baffling diagrams <much respect to pein for his instructions>).  I guess I'll work on pies next.  I'm procrastinating with the smithing because man that's a hell of a lot of steps.

#58 Re: Main Forum » How to make a successful city? » 2018-10-01 04:45:14

Basically, dirt management.  You have to have people aware of how important it is and so are keeping an eye on the necessary resources for compost.  People who aren't munching berries when there's six other food items strewn around them.

In my opinion, the weakest link is almost always a lack of a solid sheep pen with pooping sheep.   The next weakest link is people not understanding the "yum" factor and food and just munch berries all day.  It's important to NOT munch berries when there's other food around because it's needed to produce sheep dung and the compost material itself.  We're all guilty of it, I know, but the more you can limit it and eat other stuff (pies, omelettes, cactus, even carrots which tend to be overproduced) the better.  Then people don't tend to keep an eye on compost.  Then I always have to go running around looking for the darn shovel.

In larger settlements, before you start making a road, backpack or walls, check on how you can contribute to the compost chain including by making pies from the mutton chunks and rabbit carcasses which are almost always strewn all over the place.

I'm not going to read this but I have to say that yesterday two out of every three births was to a Scholar.  Y'all were everywhere.

#60 Re: Main Forum » Abandon Boys » 2018-10-01 04:28:19

The only reason that would make me agree is the suiciding baby phenomenon (and yeah, I'm guilty too).

But otherwise, then you should keep all males and as few females as possible.  One or two.

Personally, I prefer playing a male.  I can contribute without interruption and I can eat while ranging.  Eating while ranging is an extremely valuable skill in the early game.  It's much harder as a female.

So, when I enclose cows using a regular fence, how to create a gate?  I tried a bush at the entrance but it didn't work.  Had to just complete the fence in the end just before I died.

Stepwells as a higher level tech for water.

There are plenty of clay-only examples of grain silos in history.

Bricks is brilliant.  They've been around for 10,000 years.

Cobblestone would also be good.

Man, I would love to see a Pein authored guide book.  I'll volunteer to edit one for you if you agree...  Your advice/guidance is the best.

Pein, thanks for pointing out poor gameplay.  I find they improve my game.

My first reaction too.  However there's yucca the tree and there's yuca the tuber.  I think the OP meant the tree.

I agree that the berry focus can ruin a town.  I'm tired of constantly either producing compost or going on soil runs because people don't know any better.  But, although I'm not entirely new to the learning curve of this game, the "yum game" is new to me and I would never have understood it without hanging out on this forum.  So in that aspect, this game models life's constant struggle against ignorance.

Maybe we need dedicated town criers/preachers who just stand around yelling slogans.  Or maybe we should be able to produce inspirational signs.

lately I've been into trapping but often when spawning into a city there's no snare so I have to run around making one.  I get really stressed out hoping that nobody grabs my thread/rope while I'm looking for a stake.  Wish we had one slot pockets in some clothes...

Dead baby sheep are infinite, so that's why you can't use it as a direct ressource for food or clothes.

Unless you meant pigs, in which case, we can eat them.

That makes sense.  The wiki page says "sheep generate domestic lamb every 2 minutes."  In that sense they're "infinite."  You do nothing and a lamb is born anyway.  And that's not the same as berries appearing on the bush because you have to tend the bush.  So you would get more or less free food/shoes mats every two minutes.  So maybe that "sheep generate domestic lamb every 2 minutes" mechanic needs to change.  Artificial insemination?  big_smile

this is a really great point that should be taken up by everyone.  Definitely increases efficiencies in a number of ways.  At least if people want a huge berry farm there should be space between three bushes in a row.

Jason, what's wrong with baby carrying?  Fairly rudimentary tech that would be very helpful.  Just one piece of cloth is needed.

In the real world having a baby is a huge sacrifice, but in the game we just have to feed it for 3 minutes

Point taken (and I realize you're only the messenger) but counterpoint is that an Eve wouldn't be able to manage the agricultural tech behind it as a gatherer and so would still experience the sacrifice you describe, in particular if she's alone.  However, a new mother in an agricultural town with a family network and easy access to woven cotton, silk, wool or straw, wouldn't experience the same sacrifice IRL and so shouldn't be penalized by not having access to it.

I'm in India.

Game ran fine on July 30.

Game couldn't connect to servers on Aug 1.  I got that red exclamation point in a square box at the top of the screen.  Also couldn't connect to game website.

Installed a VPN.  Fixed the problem.

I'm assuming this is an India problem but just in case something changed that affected other countries, letting you know.
