a multiplayer game of parenting and civilization building

You CAN expand by taking an engine somewhere and making a mine. But you can't expand by starting from scratch, unless you want to do it iron-free....
I'm sure you see the issue in this as well as me, which is at that point, it no longer matters whether you put the diesel mine at home, or at the expanded area, it will still cost the limited kerosene and it becomes that there is literally no advantage to the outpost whatsoever (aside the well, which as you put well is rather bulky to haul, but people like me still have done it on a tire cart horse! Brown town before wipe had an emergency deep well that looks like it got used all the way up until the wipe)
So, at that point expansion, what does it yield? Just a bit of water. Otherwise the resources there could have been easily gathered by cart without fussing over a well. Wild food's value is so negligible that its not even worth mentioning or giving it any sort of "value" to make an outpost worth it.
So the way I see it, any town is basically a ticking time bomb, where once the diesel-free iron veins run out, a town is most certain to die unless by some miracle gingers cooperate and give kerosene. Which they won't, I recommend seeing my other post.
The only reason towns had oil in the last map was because people like me and others went out of their way over multiple lives to secure resources to get kerosene to keep towns running, then distribute it. Not because of trade. Again the vets are basically carrying everything.
Also, I must note that what I'd ACTUALLY like to see is oil become semi-renewable so that it balances better with other necessary racial goods, but this game only gets nerfs not buffs. I'm not wasting my time suggesting something that buffs.
We don't trade, yet every fam has everything, maybe just less and not right away.
That's not a surprise, we live in different families every next life, therefore we just share things.
That's because some vets that have a hero complex spend multiple lives of every race gathering everything and supplying towns while asking for nothing in return. This is NOT how Jason wants us to play. (I'm included in this, I won't lie but I see the problems in playing this way)
Water is the lifeblood of a town (or iron, considering new updates). With this all in mind, Gingers have no reason to trade it away. Why?
A. Oil is non-renewable. Rubber products can all be renewed in your backyard.
B. It costs very little rubber to generate lots of oil.
Renewable vs. non-renewable means that oil has a significantly higher value. It isn't worth to trade oil for mass rubber because mass rubber simply isn't needed.
Suggestion: Make oil rigs cost way more to run in terms of rubber. Make it so each use only yields 2 pips on a tank (but triple the amount of uses so it generates roughly the same amount of oil.
If you already have a homeland elsewhere, creating another well site will not dry up iron sites along that other ley line.
I want clarification on this statement.
"Well site" as in the 10 stones on the spring? Or are you saying that even if we construct a new well, we still won't be able to harvest new iron from that area?
If YES:
This is completely counter-intuitive. Why does a family expand its reach? To gain access to more resources. What this does is discourages the concept of even expanding. Why would you expand if there's nothing to be gained?
If NO:
Then I suppose that's acceptable in my opinion. Families should be able to expand to increase their grasp on resources. I do understand that just throwing 10 stones on a natural spring would make it too 'easy' to gain additional iron without any real additional work. (Not that bringing a shovel and using it once to dig is that much more effort, though).
EDIT:
Another thing that's been nagging me. Springs are all on a grid. We have horizontal ley lines. Why not vertical? Should not these veins etc. be able to appear vertically as well? Only on horizontal lines feels unnatural.
“Heavy yummer”
Yep that’s me right there. Unless I’m using the power of calcium to kill swamps
Baked potato can get me some serious bonus pips later in life.
The server has seemed to be fairly laggy the last couple hours, nearly to the point of unplayability. I have spoken with other players ingame and on discord, and they are also experiencing a degree of latency. Double checked my own connection and it's running smooth. Wondering if anyone else is getting these issues, and if so perhaps a server restart is in order? Not sure what should be done at this point.
I'm very happy with these changes. 0 food bonus is too much anyway, should be -2, starting with +2 at first generations. I'm serious.
Getting oil from very far away is a problem because towns last too long so we just deplete all tarry spots we find. We have 2-3 towns where we live over and over again. Boring.
A town lasting a long time wouldn't be a problem is there were more content to give players in developed towns things to do (not toy/fun things, but necessary things) Of course, the cry for content is nothing new in this community. A single, solo developer, no matter how talented or good they are, cannot keep up with the demands of content that a modern gamer generally needs.
Also, a small player base = few populated towns = you'll see a lot of the same towns over and over.
Not exactly what you wanted but you could probably just write a batch file to handle the copying renaming etc for you.
Morti are you talking about after the first update or the second one with the server crash fix? If you’re talking about the first, I know the first bells to be rung were will town and the other town just ~500 tiles west of there. Those are roughly 1.5k southeast of Qin town. The only town that has a functioning radio besides qin town is will town I’m pretty sure so it must have been people there.
Also, were you a brown girl? I may have been your daughter. Think my moms name was Emily but I could be wrong.
Also you seem to hold a lot of the same sentiments about this game that I do. I wish we had more players like you.
If you watch the timelapse on wondible's map you can see what I'm saying, where there were long periods of time absolutely no one was there. This was a time where the boots towns had started dying off and things were sprawling further and further. Working on the town became so hard at that point bc it was either far or I didn't know exactly where I was and how to get back.
Zucc/Succ as it was so lovingly named, actually had very humble beginnings. Back when the last apocalypse happened, if you remember, the blacks, whites, and gingers were all living fairly close together (at the time I think the were all the Boots family). However, the previous brown family had died out, as a result they had a new eve spawn, and were seeemingly MIA for a while. I remember spending many lives tryin to find my way to connect the fams but nothing ever worked. Because of this, rubber was a real struggle for a very long time.
Many people like myself kept trying to make bell towers in the main Boots towns, however typical griefing (intentional or unintentional I'm unsure) kept disassembling them and resetting the stabilization timer. That's when I knew the only way this was going to work was go off site, and make it where it didn't get much foot traffic. So I headed west from the white Boots town, and started development in a fertile piece of land, alone. This is how Zucc was born.
Many times I would sacrifice my gene score just to get male, so that I wouldn't have to worry about anyone tampering with things. Sometimes I would keep a female play, and just run back to the white fam during my fertile life. Many many lives of back and forth were taken while I started the basic layout and farms for the town (might I add, the original layout only had four berry patches surrounding the well, now look at it!). There were times where once the bottom layer of bell tower stabilized, I knew I didn't have to worry about it being reset anymore, and had small bursts where families lived there. They never stayed long though. As my tower was going up, families were spreading further and further out. The life I finally managed to get the bell on the tower, I was born in a ginger camp over 1.5k east of Zucc. But that life is where everything began.
I had never thought Zucc would get as big and overgrown as it is today. It was only meant to be a call for help, a way to pull people together so we could all have water again. And truthfully, after the bell was placed and people of all four races started moving in, Zucc has very fun and memorable beginnings. I remember when the tat shop first went up, and everyone was having a blast with that. Back then, things were smooth and everyone was working in tandem.
But, as time would have it, eventually the melting pot of a town became a typical bell town scene. Big messes, sprawling constructions with no real clear purpose, and of course, grief and bobo's gang. This caused a lot of bad memories for people, and made them come to despise Zucc. This was the time I even started to work on other things, and develop a Zucc 2.0 per se (this is where the triple bell town to the southwest was started, and is now on and off thriving).
Some early screenshots I took before the town was populated:
This was after the town was populated, same day I rang bell for first time. I was at work at the time, so someone else took a screenshot for me:
