#51 Re: Main Forum » Early Camp Farming: Carrots or Stew Crops? » 2018-07-25 09:58:10

Food variation doesn't matter as much early on. The best strategy if you're in a not-so-great area with limited wild foods (wild berry bushes and cacti primarily) is to make a stone hoe and plant ten or so of berry bushes (until hoe breaks). This is enough berry bushes to sustain about 5 people. If you're in a good area with plenty of cacti, then you really don't need to do any farming until you have your steel tools made. You should also be rushing omelettes for your adults.

Stew is incredibly overrated and is literally just a meme at this point (the maths behind this is out of the scope of this post). Carrots should only ever be eaten in a "yum maximising" society and this is unlikely to be the case until you're at the sheep and compost phase of the game. Carrots produce ~27 calories per plot, AND require tilling, whereas berries produce 35 and DO NOT require tilling (after the bush has been planted).

There's not really any way to run out of soil given how much is around. ~5 soil per person while a single soil pit has 30(?) soil in total. That means even without other food sources, you only need 3 or so soil pits to get you through to the sheep and composting phase.

The reason why your camps are dying off is because people aren't doing meaningful/progressive work, and/or there are too many carrot sponges.

Always remember that the most important thing to do as Eve after choosing a good location is getting steel tools, especially the hoe ASAP and to make lots of bowls and plates. You should aim to have sheep by the time the third generation is reaching old age.

Edit: DO NOT underestimate cactus fruit. A part time cactus farmer in a good area can easily take home 1000-3000 calories in their life time, while a good full-time stewmaster in an already set up area can maybe produce 2000 calories BUT they use a lot of water, soil and iron, while the cactus farmer uses NONE.

If people are interested in learning the finer points of the game, I strongly suggest the Discord. Although there are occasional nuggets of wisdom here, these nuggets originate from discussions had in the Discord.

Yeah, just bad players as well as problems with server population and player distribution.

This town was quite good, They focused  more on stews and pies not so much berries. I was a bit lost at first, cooked up a few raw stew pots that were laying around and planted some seeds. I had to to go afk, My brother was nice and kept me alive while I was gone.

Then I saw an unfinished building, The walls and door was already finished but the interior had no floor and was covered in bones.

Brother made a cemetery on both sides and we decided to make it a "church". I finished off the floor and removed a random oven that was inside.
Door had a lock on it but luckily I had the key, I feel like it will eventually be griefed. I think some people wanted to use it as a hospital.

After that I helped some lady make pies until I died. I wanted to give her my pack but a little girl took it. From what i can see no one has been murdered so maybe I was lucky and she wasn't a griefer. She said she wanted to hunt rabbits so I guess she just wanted the storage. I hope my unintentional heir didn't turn out to be a bitch.

Mother died young and she only had boys stay, 1 made it pretty far, 2 suicided and me and Luna died of old age. Everyone else was random cousins in a different branch of the family tree.

I was the little girl that took the pack. I thought I'd make better use of it and I believe I did (trapper/shepherd). I ended up using the key to save my daughter and granddaughter who got trapped in the house. I also added the second layer to the belltower.

Very sad that the civ died.

Edit: Turns out my granddaughter let the civ down... Maybe if I was a better grandmother.

So that's the reason behind the lags!

Yep. Every even download has a Bitcoin miner, but odds are clean. Unfortunately because of this I won't be able to download the mod until next update :'(

#62 Re: Main Forum » How to make compost » 2018-07-19 16:05:31

Anything that inhibits noobs but benefits pros is a good thing.

Free range is now officially the new meta.

@Pein Usually someone ends up breaking the sheep pen in long term civs, and there are a few sheep roaming the wilderness tho

The sledge is only nice because it sucks so much that people probably aren't going to steal it, and that it doesn't decay.

So, thoughts?

I once had a griefer steal a sledge from Trump Town back in the day :'(

+1 for general idea, but important to note that it's not just wheels on wheelbarrows/carts that get fucked. Obviously balance is key, hence the +1.

I don't actually think I actually experienced the grey fog more now than I did before...

I think this mod should be the default setting, or at the very least a choosable setting. Every time vanilla is updated (and the mod falls behind), I'm reminded of how superior 1080p is compared to vanilla settings.

Just wanted to thank Joriom for his hard work putting this mod together every update, especially the versions that don't have a Bitcoin miner embedded.

Lately I've taken to rushing free range sheep and later locking up the carrot patch with grave stones.
It's faster, uses less resources, and people get the idea not to eat the carrots if there's a fence around them.
Free range farm animals are also super cute.

10/10 less than half the amount of gravestones, keeps noobs away from eating carrots but doesn't stop the yum masters/tradesmen, the fencing doesn't "occupy" any tiles (carrots/seeds can be passed through), AND means you can get sheep going a solid 30 mins faster saving a significant amount of thread!

Could potentially be in the shearing and compost business within 30-45 mins with a good team.

Edit: For a carrot farm, you never need more than 8 plots EVER (even if the population was 30 people). Therefore you only need around 18 marked graves, compared to about 36 for a very basic sheep pen.

It already pays off. In some of my games Yum Bonus has contributed 60-65% of my caloric intake.

Wouldn't say he's lazy, Just needs to focus more on content then gimmicks likes twins and cursing.

I'm not saying they're necessarily related, but after that update the server population doubled. Regardless, the twin update is pretty fun.

Edit: Somewhere between doubling, and tripling.

#68 Re: Main Forum » Jason is lazy..Maybe » 2018-07-17 05:54:57

Every single working day without fail Jason is working on the game. The proof of this is in the live-dev-changes. I think it's very cruel to say Jason's "fucking lazy" considering all the work he puts into the game. Sure we don't get groundbreaking content every week, but it would be absurd to think you would.

Take a break from the game and come back in a month or two.

In a public forum, nothing is private. In a forum that is specifically for players and with his time on the boards its more than likely he would see it, its inevitable.

With the second sentence its was "enfeeble your intellect and let yourself be controlled by your feelings". It just doesn't make sense since you would be trying NOT to react to your feelings and reply to the comment.

It really depends on how you want to define the idiom "behind one's back". I'm really not interested in critiquing how relevant a subjective idiom is in a certain context.

I really don't understand what you're trying to say, but that wasn't the second sentence, it was the third. Regardless, I was referring to how Trick appears to weight emotion over logic.

Definitions for clarity:
Enfeeble - make weak or feeble.
Intellect - a person's mental powers.

#70 Re: Main Forum » Liz the Racist » 2018-07-15 14:41:41

Thanks for writing all that based on a joke about Trudeau.

I'm not sure what's wrong with my second sentence, please elaborate.

Talking about someone who's not in the metaphorical room would constitute "talking behind their back". Since YAHG wasn't in the thread (the room), I believe it was a valid thing to say.

You mean noobs, there are new players joining every day. We have a system to deal with griefers, the curse system. We also have a system to deal with stabbings. Stab all you would like.

I was being dramatic, but the curse system doesn't work very well.

When a civ is overpopulated people need to realise they can't keep every child. Some people think that it will sort itself out naturally, but it doesn't - it leads to a death spiral where people struggle to find a morsel of food and as a result it doesn't work.

#73 Re: Main Forum » Mini guide: what job you need to do in the city? MOM WUT DO? » 2018-07-15 09:31:23

Good guy Pein producing another guide.

When making sheep pens, it's ideal to have entrances/exits on every corner, preferably using a corner fence kit, since unlike filled trash pits they are removeable, allowing for future expansion.

Don't forget that the Yum Bonus is INCREDIBLY useful and EVERYONE needs to be cognisant of it. If there are certain foods unavailable in a town, then it's a great idea to work on producing that food. Yum Bonus can provide upwards of 60% of your calories, meaning if you're a good player you'll be eating FIVE TIMES less food than a sponge (Yum Bonus + temp).

User YAHG on these forums is a self-proclaimed racist.

This is a problem in the game, and there are a lot of people who think it's 'funny' and/or defend it for some reason or another.  The game developer, Jason, has been noticeably quiet about the issue.

Anyway, I say they are pieces of shit and everyone should band together to curse and kill them off.  If they want to be trash, they can play by themselves.

Just know that you aren't alone in despising these people.

I don't think anybody really cares if you think YAHG is a piece of shit. You shouldn't be talking about people behind their back like a filthy coward.

The reason you don't address YAHG's core arguments and instead "ignore" him is because you find it easier to enfeeble your intellect and let yourself be controlled by your feelings. It's self-protective behaviour that protects you from emotional distress - cowardice.

@OP In-game racism is incredibly rare and you need to understand that people can say unpleasant things and the simplest solution is to simply ignore it. As the esteemed Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau said "Fighting racists means the racists win".
