Lots of content, so it takes a really long time to stagnate, if it does at all.
Also role-playing opportunities.deverse social roles to fill.

Well, it was for him, but the normal player who just wanted to contribute, got stabbed from behind and closed the game frustrated does not have that kind of experience. For most of the players involved it was just another griefer ruining their fun.

True enough. I should hope, though, that players don't completely quit the game after being murdered. They could easily be reborn and try again. With enough other people actively contributing to positive experiences, it should balance out the negative experiences.

I was a fertile woman, and the last survivor of a mass murder. I did manage to survive, kill the killer, and leave behind a daughter who saved the village.
I don't think it should be too difficult for a thriving village to leave a few things around out in the wilderness. In my last life I found several little abandoned settlements far from the main village. They weren't ideal, with not enough water, and problems like that, but it was certainly better than nothing.

Good idea but in this post-apocalyptic world we have to focus on farming and hunting etc etc and building houses for something that "might" happen isn't going to be on the top of anyones list. Maybe on the private servers but it might be a while until we get enough resources on the main servers for something like this (at least server 6)

Sadly, I don't think it's something that just might happen. Eventually there will be murders and/or famine, and when that time comes, having some basic necessities set aside out in the wilderness will be very helpful. It doesn't even have to be much, a plot of soil with seeds, a bowl or water pouch, and maybe a rabbit, a hatchet would be good too.
I don't mean a literal "house" or building. I hope that wasn't confusing.

I just think, since at this stage in the game's development, sustainability seems very difficult. So settlements might need to move around occasionally. Someone else just created a thread about this topic: "proactive Family Spreading" https://onehouronelife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=1073

What a great story I got to be part of.

I was born into a sizable family village with no last name. I was named Evelyn. My grandmother was reborn and grew up to give me a gold crown. I'm not a great leader, though. I get overwhelmed in big towns. We seemed to be doing ok, though. But suddenly, I was killed by a bow.
I was reborn as Quentin (meant to be named Queen). I was told I was the villages last girl, so the future was up to me. But no pressure. I didn't want to be queen, though. I just wanted to be a baker, live a simple life, providing pies for the village.

But, sadly, that was not to be. There was a murderer on the loose. He apparently killed everyone, except for me. I ran far away. I had two daughters and explained the situation best I could. I named one of them Savior. We went back. The killer was still there. Heart pounding, I managed to kill him with a knife I had found outside the village. Justice! Or, the closest thing to justice I could get.

The farm was in ruins. Most of the carrots went to seed. I was old now. There was just me and Savior. To be honest, I didn't have much hope left for the future of this village. One of my last daughters born was actually the killer. They said something like "Just another boring village," and then ran away.
I died there assuming I would probably never see that place again.

A while later, I was reborn in the same village again. This time I was named Lilly. It was thriving once more! Savior was still alive, and now she was my grandmother. I excited told her I was her mom. She said to me "Did I do good?" Yes, Savior. You did good. I was so happy the place was still going.
By chance, I guess, I was given the gold crown again. I passed it on to my daughter, Gladis (I named her Glad, game changed it to Gladis).

I tried to tell my children to build outwards, to put little starter villages outside the main town. I thought this would help in the case of future attacks or famines.
I stayed and raised a few children, and eventually left on a positive note.

Hi everyone.
Might I suggest, when living in a large village, make sure there are some little settlements, or starter material set up a good way away in each direction, so when there is inevitably a mass murderer on the loose, you have somewhere to run to.

I was the last survivor of a murdered village today. I wished I had had a little safe place to go to, to wait for the killer to age, or something. Or to stay and start over.
Fortunately, I did survive and even killed the killer, and left a daughter behind. Probably too little, too late. The farm was in ruins, most of the carrots went to seed. It was sad. A great, thriving village, all brought down by one piece of crap.

I think we should be polytheistic and worship/respect/sacrifice to all these gods.
But why isn't there a god of fertility? Or agriculture? Human development?

maybye it's the post-apo state of the game for now and this will change... but I haven't could try some advanced-tech for days (forge, construction, breeding)... and it's miss me...

I sure hope it changes. I'm tired of repeatedly struggling to start a settlement for nothing (because of reasons out of my control).

#61 Re: Main Forum » Adams and men having children? - Bring on the Dads! » 2018-04-09 17:11:12

Men in the game feel pretty useless. The only thing good about them is they can travel far without worry of popping out a kid. But at the earliest stage of starting a settlement, that doesn't help very much.
So, either have men help with producing children, or get rid of them all together. A world of all women sounds pretty nice.

#62 Re: Main Forum » let's talk about how often you die building settlement & family as Eve » 2018-04-09 17:06:54

Well, I can survive and build a little settlement, but none of my children ever survive, which, because of how the game works now, means likely no one will find the settlement, which makes this feel pretty pointless.
Got bored with my last life and ended it.

You live a life of luxury.
And then, after you die, you are reborn as a peasant. A poor working class family. You are expected to work hard and you get little in return. This life is difficult, and rather short. You die of some infection.
Who knows what environment you may be born into next.

This was already going on if you were playing before the apocalypse. You remove people weapons,m threathen you will kill them, make your own decision.

I think we were seeing the earliest stages of class division, with some players wearing a crown, claiming to be queen, and passing the crown to one of their children, and a player who always rode a horse who everyone else fed and called their ruler.
But I image some players living in mansions while at the same time other players live in dirt shacks, and you don't know which group you might be born into.
It's not fare to every player, but it is very interesting, and I think experiencing such vastly different lives through accident of birth will be (and is to some degree already) a large part of the fun of playing the game.
And then further in the future of the game world, some people might fight for equality while others fight against it (not only because they happen to benefit from it, but because as players they feel equality would be boring).

And maybe, in some ways, the players will become generally more compassionate and understanding because they have shared similar experiences with everyone else in the game.
For example: One time I was born in a city as a boy, but my mother let me starve. I thought "Well, I guess she wanted a girl. I understand, I've done that too." And then I was immediately reborn as a girl to the same mother, and she confirmed that was the reason she let me die. She was trying to revive a dead city. I got to tell her I understood, and I had no ill feelings toward her for it.

Could this potentially carry over into real life and help people see other's point of view? Unfortunately, probably not. But I can hope.

Wait, wait, why do we have to work so hard now to not progress? Is the only sustainable civilization one that eats only the basic starter foods? This sounds broken to me. I have to assume it's because the game is still in early development.

#66 Re: Main Forum » let's talk about how often you die building settlement & family as Eve » 2018-04-07 03:10:45

More than once I've spawned in places where I can't find any berry bushes at all, and starve to death looking.
At this early stage, with barely any settlements going, I consider myself successful if I manage to raise one girl, and help gather some basics, before I die.

#68 Re: Main Forum » APOCALUPSE TURNED OFF » 2018-04-06 17:58:35

Let's not forget that this game is still very much a work in progress.

#69 Re: Main Forum » APOCALUPSE TURNED OFF » 2018-04-06 17:26:52

Hooray!
I tried playing earlier, before this announcement, and it felt depressing and pointless. The people were struggling so hard for a meager existence that would likely be wiped away. I didn't even care I had no name.

Hmm, kind of like in the real world. A large percent of the population is regularly screwed over by a few people with money and power, and they'll probably destroy everything someday.

#71 Re: Main Forum » So the Apocalypse is here » 2018-04-06 05:11:47

Alright, just read Jason's explanation for this and how it will work in the future. It makes more sense to me now.

OK, at first I wasn't sure I liked this update at all, but when you explain it that way, it makes more sense, and I think I'm OK with it.

If we were to roleplay as new players everytime, then how is it that we know how to bake, how to farm, how hunt etc.; we learned those skills in a past life, just as we gained other knowledge along the way.

I think of it as just the collective knowledge of the civilization. Those things were learned in past generations, and were passed on to the next generation.

I also have a strong interest in the subject of reincarnation (I'm skeptical of the truth of it, but the subject is fascinating). Some people say that souls like to reincarnate in the same general places and cultures in which they lived in past lives.
But, we do normally forget those past lives. Even if a child remembers their past lives, they tend to forget it as they grow up.
Seems to me forgetting our past lives (in real life, theoretically) insures that we don't fixate on our past life families, enemies, and grudges and neglect our current life family and purpose. Forgetting helps us move on and keep learning new things.

So yeah, implementing a way for players to "forget" their past lives would, generally, be helpful.

When I shoot the bear(with right click), I always walk into the same square as the bear and then hit it with an arrow. Then I quickly move away and I am okay. It seems weird because you are supposed to be able to shoot from a range but my character always walks up to it and basically stabs it with the arrow instead of shooting. It does seem to work however, since it never kills me when that happens.

I managed to actually shoot a bear last game. And yeah, apparently I only shoot it from the square right next to the bear, which is odd, and very dangerous. I have to be careful and shoot immediately after the bear stops moving, and then quickly move away. It seems if I time it slightly off, the bear will move towards me and kill me.
