Yea i mostly meant in general, especially pre-leadership.
Most of the killing and etc was for family domination, to fight over resources, or reset the rift. Spawns would adjust to the amount of families in the rift. So families would kill each other off once eve spawns stopped so their families would get spawn priority. It would get harder and harder to kill off families the less there were. Making it into the top three guarenteed a long line.
A lot of people got tired of the slump that would happen after resources peaked. We would run out of room and natural resources which would limit the ability to be creative. In those times people would resort to violence or griefing.
Even though that being the case you still saw unique and remarkable cities pop up almost ever arc. Roads connecting many if not all. This was the last time I really felt a connection to the game. Many arcs still sit in my mind with their unique stories, monuments, cities, and families.
Since, families have felt hollow. Only defined by their race or utility. Cities are lost as fast as they are made. There is no time to develop culture, history, or stories.
Have you tried befriending the snake?

I watched videos and streams. It was a lot of senseless killing.
Hasnt that always been the game?
With leadership that would remove that problem anyway.
In terms of killing with sense. Many families would attack each other to take over cities and resources. People would flee and be refugees, gain back their strength and take back their homeland.
There were always stories in the rift and families developed a history as well as the cities created. You could see a city housing many different families over the course of an arc and each would put their own mark on it.
People would construct monuments and hidden outposts that gave a richness to the land that has been lost.

But much much bigger. 3000x3000 tiles should do nicely.
The Rift had a trail of babies following a mother or two at the end. The size of The Rift had nothing to do with that, and it certainly wasn't a good situation.
This happened due to a glitch. An end tower was triggered and only the females left over could spawn babies and no new eves were spawning. Since it was a new arc everyone was trying to eve or at least start a fresh life. That resulted in a small amount of females getting tons of spawns. Babies kept /dying to eve and mothers were abandoning them because there wasnt enough wild food to survive and feed them all.
It was called the babypocalypse because it was a flood of babies, due to an apocalypse...
The rift never worked like that normally. It worked fine for the most part but they were too short most of the time and we ran out of resourcess too quickly. Both problems easily managed with a larger sizes space. We're already locked in a moving rift anyway. Forcing all the families to stay close and constantly being pushed west.
It would be nice to have some stability to grow roots in a confined space rather than always feel on the run and watch families and towns die over and over again in an endless cycle. Never getting the opportunity to develop history and culture around them.
As someone who never played during the rift i dont think you have the right to speak on how or what it was like to play during it..

I think balancing difficulty with satisfaction is a good thing. Even at the cost of uniqueness. In the end of thr day people play games to have fun. The challenge of this game is one of its best characteristics but when those challenges feel pointless or drive away players it might be worth considering toning it down a bit.
When looking at veteran players it can make it easy to forget how hard and unforgiving this game was in the beginning. When the game is so challenging that people dont even have time to communicate, teach, or form connections we lose a lot of what makes this game great.
Perhaps more satisfying challenges that feel good to overcome is the answer as opposed to ones that feel like endless grinding only to have it mean next to nothing.
Hopefully you considering giving this game some much needed love. Im sure players would come back if they saw some QoL changes.
Focus on what you enjoy in the game. Do what you need to do have fun and enjoy your time playing. Ignore everything else.
Buy a second account and give birth to yourself all night.
No, i havent played in over 14 months. I just enjoy reading the forums.
And why?
The forums are way too quiet so im making a new thread
: )
My favorite is the chisel because i love building and cutting stone.
Most people on the forums who complain dont play anymore.
Most griefers are well known and tracked by community members. Join the discord and ask around and people may be able to tell you who's doing it by name.
Griefing has always been a problem and most of the prolific offenders are banned on the forums.
Trolling and negativity is a defining characteristic of these forums. Without it, these forums would lose the flair that makes them interesting. I personally would have stopped reading them long ago if it wasnt the chaotic mess that it is.
I respect your perspective as someone coming back to the game with a fresh heart and mind. Many people on here and in the game have been hardened by the frustrations this game can promote. With enough time invested you may feel exactly as they do.
Teching is probably the most important part of the game. Specifically drilling oil with an engine. Farms often get neglected though and water runs out quickly. Collecting water from ponds in buckets and using wild soil is a good way to stretch resources. Race restrictions get in the way of a lot of tech and development so until you get your feet under yourself again I suggest focusing on stability oriented things like food, farming, cothes, firewood, and nursery building.
Pine trees dont take hungry work.
Leave your biome band so you dont have babies as a woman. Stay in town as a male to keep your relatives alive. Dont waste food on afks, unless you're a meme score wh***. Just let them die. Families with the least amount of females get a fertility boost so its almost impossible for them to die out naturally like they used to.
There are a lot of ways to meta play. Most of them I hate and are a big reason I left.
Best meta is to try and have fun the best you can.
Tool slots were worse than race restrictions. Cant think of a worse mechanic that has been added to the game. They make no sense and only serve as a limitation to disable veteran players and disappoint noobs as they attempt to learn the game. Imagine trying to teach someone how to make compost but both your tool slots are full. Then having to run around for 10 minutes trying to get someone to use it for you so you can continue teaching...
I dont need to imagine. Worst. Trash. Ever.

No.
Maybe?
Bring back the rift
I thought it could be fun for everyone to post their favorite Jason quote in this thread.
Mine is:
"I'm Spoonwood" - Jason Rohrer
What about:
Copper pot + copper rod + (fuel injector + copper foil)
Back when dodge defended Jason. Simpler times indeed.
You speak of ohol like its supposed to be grounded in morals and values of modern society. When its more akin to a lawless wild wasteland filled with people desperate to survive. In an environment like that you might be surprised by what you would do. Imagine if you had spent half your lifetime working on something only to have it stolen from you.
Yea i imagine the taser and jail would never be used nefariously...
Jail wont work because, just like killing, its a double edged sword that can be used by those with either good or bad intentions.
"Conflict resolution shouldn't involve murder for the sake of expediency."
Tell this to every war ever
I dont understand why people want to have ohol be this utopian world. Ide much rather it be as close to real life as possible. Who says humans have ever been good by nature? Just look at our history as a species.
Temp bans like the old donk town would probably be more effective tbh. The current one is ok but its has a lot of holes in it. Not surprising since it was developed in the rift and hasnt seen much adjustment since. Killing griefers does play a minor role though. I agree its not much but it does stop with behavior instantly and forces them to respawn and wait before they can do anything again. If its killing they're after they'll have yo wait quite a while before they can do it again each time. In that sense its valuable. Saves time while wasting theirs. The current system just wastes everyones time while promoting more harmful forms of griefing.
The one real fix to griefing is to give them an actual outlet like tarr suggests. Something where those players thats inclient towards that style of play can have a role and have fun. While not being a detriment to society or inclined to self sabotage.
Thats not an easy option to find but i honestly think war is the best we have. Wars were common in the rift. They could suck. But it forced people to fight and defend themselves often. It gave players that were inclined towards that playstyle and outlet on both end. Fight for the benefit or safety of your family. In fighting was rare and because most players had to be combat skilled to survive back then it was often squashed quickly.
Not saying that was good system but it was a system we had that I honestly prefered over the resource griefing we have now. 'Killer' player types exist in any game and they will find their outlet however they can. Clubs can be annoying, yes, but they are a good portion of any playerbase. Removing them isnt an option. We need to respect they are a part of this game and try to give them something thats more fun and less harmful to do.
New system = less killing, more frustration
Griefers can do a ton of damage before you can organize people to kill them. Was much simpler to chase them off with a knife or shoot them as soon as you saw them misbehaving. Griefers killing someone and being killed was annoying but in principle it was the same as two people SIDing. Scrapping an engine or driving off with a truck is far more harmful. Those forms of griefing really only gained popularity once leadership/kill mechanics were added.
It was a lot easier dealing with griefers when you could just stab them and keep weapons in the hands of trustworthy folk. Having to chase around the leader asking them to exile someone is stupid. Especially when you have to explain it in detail to new players who dont understand the system.
