Tbh I just yesterday noticed Spoonwood's join date and post count. On average he's made ~6 posts per day since he joined 318 days ago. Maybe not staring at the forum all the time would do you some good, Spoonie.

I tested your assertion Fulmen.

I logged in after the odd numbered servers had come back online.  It said that there were 58 people on bs2 and 11 on s1.  I did NOT download the update.  I checked the custom server box with the correct name "bigserver2.onehouronelife.com".  It told me that bigserver2 had been shut down.

Apparently, the "shutdown mode" refusing connections idea is correct, whether it was wondible's or mine.

Edit: I tried to log in again just to double-check, and got the 'server has been shut down' message again and couldn't log in.

Unlucky, or he fixed it. Either way, worked for me a few weeks back.

Some time ago Jason rolled back, either intentionally or accidentally, the spawn algorithm change that distributed babies more equally among families. I'm not sure why he did that, maybe to ensure we have big towns again? That actually goes against the idea of having multiracial towns which is required now, so still not sure of the logic behind that. Either way, we're now at a situation where not only is it nigh-impossible to Eve, it's also very likely all your effort is for naught as the line is almost bound to die out within a few generations.

#54 Re: Main Forum » Spoonwood, we need to have a talk. » 2019-12-20 07:57:41

Over at another forum I frequent, https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/in … tudio.720/, they ban people who repeatedly necro threads that have been inactive for over 30 days, and lock the necro'd thread. Why moderators aren't doing anything about someone repeatedly necroing over half a year old threads on this board is baffling.

Last I counted from old footage, berry bushes used to hold 8 berries, as did bowls.

#57 Re: Main Forum » Griefing-overfeeding » 2019-12-16 04:51:14

It's a bug that was introduced recently and only works on kids AFAIK. Strangely and conversely, I was actually unable to feed my AFK mother in one game, as if she were full, but she then starved just a moment later.

I logged in to BS2 a few weeks back during an update cycle by using the custom server address. Immediately spawned as Eve, as the server only had a few people remaining, as almost everyone had been respawned into S1. I quit, waited for the other people to die off and then watched as the server restarted normally, then went back in post-update, I think for an Eve run.

You'll just have to see for yourself though.

Heh, my family has died out many times because of an update. It's annoying, but it is what it is.

Two wells down and west from bell town. Locked with G lock, its behind the top right corner of the smith room, leave it there when you done pls...

Looks nice, but is about as usable as a Mini as a station wagon.

Was born there a few hours ago. Needless to say it didn't take long of dealing with literally no space till everyone there moved to the nearby bell town. Gma gave it a go though, and tried breaking down the plaster walls to make more space, but it wouldn't have been even remotely close to enough, even if she had succeeded in taking all of them down.

I get that it was never meant for more than 1-2 people, but any kind of building like that with a full set of farms, animals, etc. is a noob trap that just leads to possibly generations of families living in an agony of stunted potential and hours of inconvenience. Probably best to not even build such contraptions, at least not too far from towns for noobs to settle them as their own separate settlements.

There was an update today, during that time births are turned off until people live out their lives, people go over to server1 usually

Actually that only applies when a non-pre-defined connection address, i.e. the default setting, is used. Ergo, if you manually choose to spawn in BS2 by ticking the "use custom server" box and then typing in the server address, you can still get in, even when people who have not done so get re-directed to S1. This can be used to intentionally delay BS2 from automatically restarting, for instance.

As for getting no babies, I noticed Jason rolled back, intentionally or not, the equal baby distribution algorithm some time ago, around the time we got the tool and "biome access tied to race" update. I've Eve'd several times since, and had almost no kids, while there were families with dozens of people on the server at the same time. Have had the same situation with non-Eve lives in low-pop families too.

Nice triple-post @jcwilk. In all seriousness, this forum badly needs multi-quote functionality, and a number of other QoL features that makes replying to multiple posts or points within one reply a hell of a lot easier. Excluding the graphics, you'd think this board was put up in 1995.

#64 Re: Main Forum » Idea for a leadership ability: Orders » 2019-12-15 08:59:02

Barons, counts, dukes, kings and emperors? The real question is, does Jason Rohrer play Crusader Kings?

#65 Re: Main Forum » Bring back quad cursing » 2019-12-14 22:22:26

Twins, I can agree, are often a wild card, but triplets, let alone quads, I very rarely have seen grief, and have never seen abuse the curse system. In my experience this phobia against quads comes from people who themselves don't quad, and relies purely on extremely unlikely hypotheticals.

As others have noted, banning multiples from cursing was a rift thing, and even then was overkill that did more harm than good. Now the rift is gone, and it's time to reverse this, if not simply bad, then obsolete design choice.

Removing it was an impulsive decision Jason made based on 1-2 people complaining about an issue that did not exist. Personally in over 1000 hours I have never seen quads or even trips abuse cursing. Basically he used a shotgun to kill a fly.

Ironically, removing it did create an actual issue, namely a decreased ability to deal with griefers while playing with friends. I run an OHOL Discord server dedicated to VOIP quadding, and the times we have saved towns from griefers have been innumerable. Preventing them from spawning there again is a part of that process. Asking other players around you to curse them in your stead is unreliable and often does not work or matter (e.g. if everyone around you are old and dying soon, or if there is a major language barrier, which is quite common), giving ample time for griefers to respawn, perhaps as your own baby, not revealing themselves until they are old enough to carry weapons and start griefing again.

So please Jason, reverse this overkill design choice you made a few patches ago.

I know this won't garner much support here; most folks on this forum don't play in organised quads, but at least I've given my two cents on this issue.

#67 Re: Main Forum » Possible Update? Role for Dogs » 2019-12-14 00:15:24

The OP's idea is solid.

Having a shepherd dog in or around the pen could act as a positive modifier to the sheep, perhaps even doubling their production of wool, shit and offspring. Obviously with such a powerful modifier the effect would not stack if multiple dogs were added.

A guard dog could shield the town, or a portion of it, by blocking X amount of tiles around it from hostile animals, such as bears and boars.

#68 Re: Main Forum » Jason, we would need some rewamp on transportation methods » 2019-12-05 16:19:03

Still waiting on carts, or heck, backpacks, being able to carry babies.

#69 Re: Main Forum » Bean... beans everywhere » 2019-12-05 16:15:53

New players frequently overplant crops, or leave too many to seed, be it beans, berries, carrots, corn, etc.

#70 Re: Main Forum » Idea: one kill per life? » 2019-12-05 16:11:38

Killed I think four griefers in one life yesterday, which is not that uncommon at all; experienced players regularly have to save noob towns from griefers. So that's a "no" vote from me.

No.

I already did the math, but I will repeat the conclusion here.

If I shear the adult, then feed it, and shear it again (and so on), I will have 5 fleece to show for it.

If I only feed the baby, then shear and kill the adult, I will have 5 fleece and 20 mutton to show for it.

20 mutton is a huge difference in my opinion.

Obviously if you're killing the sheep you'll want to produce more to replace the butchered ones, that's a given.

I should have clarified that I meant if the goal is mainly to shear or produce sheep shit, then IIRC there is no difference between feeding lambs and adult sheep, minus the added wait with the latter.

Over here in Finland we still have it in a bunch of places, mostly military-related, but you can also see it in older architecture, furniture, paintings and whatnot. Our president's flag, highest-ranking military medals, air force squadron flags, paratrooper and other unit flags, several county coat of arms, etc. all still have it. See here for more info and pics: http://www.virtualpilots.fi/feature/art … _swastika/

That being said, obviously someone building one in OHOL is being edgy or pulling a joke. But who cares? Personally I find a bunch of little girls getting triggered by a type of cross hilarious.

#74 Re: Main Forum » Coming Soon: Boundless World 2.0 » 2019-11-09 10:14:52

So spawning as Eve will be RNG-based, be slightly influenced by genetic score, and in practice only be available during low pop hours, or if enough families have very recently been massacred, or if the arc has reset within the past couple of minutes.

For most of us this is the same as taking the ability to Eve out of the game. Not happy about this.

#75 Re: Main Forum » Anyone else hate this new tool update? » 2019-11-01 01:31:38

Since most players quit with only a few dozen hours under their belt, well before they can become good at the game, everything in towns is always falling apart, and designing good towns and properly maintaining them is left to the very few experienced players that might happen to be around at the time. This update largely prevents that. As a consequence, even "large" towns (if you can call 15-20 player towns large) are now much more dysfunctional than before, just like I predicted.

It's also yet another item to an increasingly long list of updates that fuck over Eve players, which at this point just makes it obvious that either Jason simply does not care about the repercussions his changes might have on said players, or he is unaware of them. If it is the latter, then I will be truly astonished, since as the sole dev of the game, Jason should be fully aware of all of its mechanics, especially the more recent ones.

Just to clarify for those that don't Eve: normally spawning as Eve requires you to /die a lot. Generally this uses up most or all of your life tokens. Sometimes you even run out before spawning as Eve. Tough luck, Jason's choice.

Oh and by the way, all this /die'ing tanks your genetic fitness score to near-zero; you can go from 1st place to 850th in about 30 seconds. No score? No tool slots for you, buddy. Tough luck, Jason's choice.

But wait, there's more! Unless you spawn as Eve within the first few minutes of the arc, find a good spot and get a well built before the arc is around 30 minutes old, and the exciting limit of a whopping six (6) wells per arc has been reached, all the springs will be dry. No springs? No new camp sites for you. Touch luck buddy, Jason's choice.

P.S. Don't forget to buy at least a second copy of the game if you want to actually play as Eve when the arc resets, but don't happen to have even close to 12 life tokens.

So yeah, hence "a long list of updates that fuck over Eve players".
