I"m bad at eve runs but once things are on the 4th generation I contribute a lot. I've played with a good majority of you guys- west, tarr, and  PHARO. Pharo hasnt been mentioned but it is a good one. I also just had a good run with Mary. Didn't last long but there was a lot of roleplaying and other families that helped make up the town so who knows how long those families lasted smile

#77 Re: Main Forum » Pet Peeves? » 2018-09-18 02:01:01

I think my personal pet peeve is when people's head get in the way of work. I mean we're all guilty of this at one point so its not a huge deal- but it still sucks having to stop to ask people to move so that you cake bake the damned pies. I've never experienced people stealing my baby, at least, not yet anyway. But I've definitely had people steal  the furs I had been stockpiling for a backpack I needed to go hunting with to instead make something stupid like a hat for their newborn child. It makes me want to scream, but its part of a multiplayer game so I put on my girl pants and deal with it by going out into the fields again and putting the furs in a place with less foot traffic.

Hi Jackson!
I was your cousin, Cartez Mary, son of Mary Mary III. I saw that grave you did! It looked very nice smile

My name was Cartez Mary- son of Mary Mary III. . While I had been working alongside my family, I was suddenly seized by thoughts of our impending death looming ominously overhead. Even at the age of five the thought of death terrified me as I saw it happen at a young age- a small beagle pup had  starved to death before my eyes when I was but an infant. It was my first taste of death but it would not be the last- my mother soon after joined the grave as well. Me and my sister, Clea worked hard with Clea riding out into the fields to gather eggs while I cooked omelots. All this time mindlessly working gave me plenty of time to contemplate my life and its purpose and I found myself filled with existential dread. Death was one of those that was inevitable. I would die just as that beagle pup and my mother and other before me have. And yet... I didn't want to be forgotten. I had heard of something called 'writing' and 'paper' and decided that maybe this would give me the clarity and peace of mind I craved so desperately. I was only 16.
I had no mother to speak to and my grandmother, Eve Mary, was a busy woman. So I sought out assistance else where and found my uncle, Amerie Mary. He was hard at work at the ovens baking pies for the family I asked "Uncle, do you know how to make paper?" he paused in his work to begin to explain the complicated art of paper making. I asked him many questions and he patiently taught me in between the rounds of baking - baking that I assisted him in. I learned that making paper without a knife would be impossible so I was about to give up when grandma Eve, who had watched me work hard besides my uncle, gave me her knife as a sign of trust and honor. I thanked her and promised to use it well. I helped cut up bread before continuing with my side project. I made the wet wood mush and was about to boil it when some younger folks had covered the hot embers with a rock to make omelets. I wasn't angry of course, they were just kids and they must have watched me do it while they were infants and decided to take up the work when I switched over to baking pies and bread. So I got back to working alongside my uncle creating flour and forming pie crust and bread dough. There was butter there as well and I got to taste buttered bread for the first time. It was heavenly. I became so wrapped up in my work with Amerie that the thoughts of impending doom and death that had plagued me for so long had left me at peace. I was happy.
Then I saw that both me and my uncle were getting old. I wasn't afraid though. But I was anxious that no-one would remember us after we died- that all we did was for nothing. I found the wet wood mush and finally got to making that paper. "You finally got your paper" My uncle said proudly as I began to contemplate what to write with my charcoal pencil.

"Amerie and Cartez were the best" I wrote down before setting it down in a nearby basket
"Awwwwwww" responded my uncle as all in the village took turns reading it.

When the time came for my uncle to die, we said our goodbyes and I buried him beneath an oaktree with a gravestone and pink rose. And after years of baking my pies on my own, when my time finally came, I laid down beside him as well after passing on my knife to a member of the pharo clan named Doha. He was a nice boy and had helped me fetch flour years before.

Just want you to know Amerie that you were the best and I loved playing with you. I also want to give a shoutout to members of the Mary and Pharo clan who had played with me and made it such a good run. There were a few who didn't have lastnames there as well and just know that you were appreciated too even if you didn't have a family name smile

It works super well you just put it behind the sheep feed them. Then flip em on their back.

When you do it they give you this look like "why you do dat!" Then they just lay there paralyzed like a cat in cloths

That sounds really cute omg XD

I have a lot of fun in this game playing a variety of roles like baker and trapper (those two are my favorite roles) and while those roles are fun I do wish that I knew how to do other more complex stuff.
Things to learn:
COMPOST
It is really important to learn how to create compost as you advance through the tech tree as soil depletes faster than people like to think. Yet, if compost isn't already being made by the time I am born into the village or there aren't people out looking and gathering the resources to make it it seems that no matter what I do the farms die before I have the ability to do anything cause I'm making a crap ton of omelets to keep everyone alive until we can get the farms back running. I've never have made compost before and while I have looked at the wiki its one thing to read about it and another to do it. Poop is hard to get. Speaking of poop...
ANIMAL HUSBANDRY
I know absolute dick-all regarding animals. I know that to get a cow calf you need to get it from the tamed buffalo thing but idk how to tame that. Idk how to get sheep from the wilderness and keep them from dying. Sheering? I think I did that once in a dream. You want me to stab a sheep? uhhh ok. Did that and now there are dogs everywhere. Help.
COMBAT
There are griefers in every server ever and it seems like whenever there is one and I have a knife I always get killed because I don't know how to stab them. Not because of any moral qualms but because I keep clicking the left and right mouse button to stab them and it won't do it??? Same with bow and arrow, don't know how to use it. Wish I knew how so fuckin Hope IV or Bob IDGAF didn't fuck our entire village even after I gave my knife to a competent hunter who gets stabbed while trying to figure out what happened. Sorry, still a little salty- griefers will hopefully quiet down after donkey town.
SMITHY
Being a smith seems really cool, if a really hard job. I tried to figure out smithing during the tutorial but I accidentally used the only two saplings needed to skewer rabbit to make knitting needles trying to create tongs and after spending twenty minutes running around all the way back to the beginning of the tutorial and found not a single sapling to be used- I decided smithing wasn't for me. Smithing just seems rather complex and one of those things that are really difficult to to teach on a time limit with limited speech bubbles. It would be really cool to learn at some point though.
EVE RUNNING
I knoooooow that there are forty different tutorials out there on how to do eve runs but theory is a lot different from practice. I run around feeling pressured by the invisible but very real threat of death over my head trying to find a good spot and the the babies start pouring out and I feel bad for abandoning them so I try to keep ONE alive which turns out to be a real problem when trying to make the damned bowdrill cause babies are slow AF and you cant leave em anywhere for five seconds cause its cold and they starve quick with only four food bars and just klajsdsljkfhgekjthkjernhnkgbjk AAAAAND my baby is dead. A little while later, things aren't so bad. I have a kiln and a fire going and look! We have bowls and plates, life is good.
But... I still don't have a stable source of food going via farm and even if  I manage to get seeds and create a hoe between doing everything else needed to be done to set up camp by the time the food grows its often too little, too late. I still try during all my eve runs yet not a single one has worked out due to the above mentioned reasons or I accidentally choose a shitty spot (how could I be so dumb to forget to check if the area had goose ponds??? for christ's sake). I think my main problem is that I'm too slow to get the stuff done that needs to be done and so I use up all the naturally growing food while trying to raise my kid.

Now that all thats over with. Theres always been something that I wanted to have happen but I don't think has happened.
LIBRARIANS:
We can write now people! I think it would be cool to have a spot filled with papers about people's name and their stories. Maybe stories about a massacre that took place or how a monarchy cult was taken down? Or maybe keep record of a union be it a marriage or a partnership between two people. Maybe even adoption papers would be cool. It would be a grandma writing down advice to her great-grandkids that she will never see or a nomadic eve writing a note to her child that she left with the village. A set of rules written down like- dont feed the dogs or leave mutton laying around. There is endless potential for writing and it seems like its only used for curses or for various forms of trolling or writing down useless bits of info like 'beef beef beef beef beef.' I wish paper were easier to make and that I could spend some time at one point writing down either my story or the stories of others, especially as an elder whose death draws near. There are many stories I wanted to tell to others about the history of a village but couldn't because people were too busy to listen. I feel that writing stuff down is the key to villages having a culture, which is the base of civilization and something I feel is lacking in OHOL at the moment. Maybe there could be a way to bind papers together to create books to help with storing paper. A book of laws could be made and that would be cool. A history book could be made too! Heck, someone could write a love book to their dog Fido, if thats what they want. Art is art afterall and the creation of art is what enriches a culture.

I was part of the moist lineage this afternoon. My name was Tempest Moist and I had one of my daughters beg me to kill her so that she wouldn't be born back into the town. It was a living nightmare because the landscape had been left barren except for goose ponds so you needed to spend like two minutes riding the roads to gather resources- it seemed like no matter how far you got the stuff you needed to progress was still too far away.
i eventually gave up at 43 because I had to go and do chores rl but it was a painnnnn. We were literally living off of omelots.

I found a fix that worked for me -

It isn't related to the permissions, but related to the fact that the OneLife.exe and OneLife.exe.bak already seems to exist, which trips up the updater.

If you:

1. Delete the OneLife.exe.bak
2. Rename the OneLife.exe to something like OneLife1.exe
3. Run the executable + get the update
4. Observe: The update should complete

^^^THIS WORKED FOR ME!
Thanks Wispin! You are the best!

I was born to my mother shortly after my older sister. Mother must have been weak, for she died mere moment after having me. Her name was Amanda. My uncle, Apollo, named me Albert and my sister Emma. Yet it was Emma who looked after me. She was older than me and was strong enough to move on her own- she gathered berries for me until I too was grown. We worked hard, me and Emma, separately but never apart in heart. I looked after the carrot farm and wove baskets together while waiting in the fields. I wandered off into the wilderness and discovered many eggs which I brought back to the village. I went out into the wilderness once more to gather clay and when I returned I saw the new generation making loads and loads of omelets- which created a time of plenty. I went out into the wilderness once again and brought back wheat seeds which I planted into the soil and tended till maturity- it grew and the mothers of the village used it to make bread for their children. What a wonder! I didn't know how to make bread- nor how to make omelets- but it was satisfying to see what little I could offer was helping the village. I had watched an older man when I was younger set traps to catch rabbits and decided to try that. I gather two snares in a basket and went to the fields of yellow grass and set the traps. While waiting, I made more baskets and ate wild carrots. I brought the rabbits and the baskets I had gathered back to the village, but while I was traveling back I noticed the grave of my uncle Apollo laying near the grave of my mother, Amanda, who had died 30 years ago. It filled me with such sorrow that after I had dropped off the rabbits to the village cooks, I went back for them to lay them to rest in the village cemetery- where I was able to bury my mother and give her a headstone. I wanted to write something, but I was illiterate and could not. As I made my daily trips to gather rabbits, I noticed many bodies laying around- nameless and alone- and while I couldn't give them names nor did I wish to accompany them into the void just yet, I gathered their bodies whenever I had time and laid them to rest with our ancestors. I found both ancient bones long forgotten and the freshly dead bodies of my nieces and nephews had by my sister, Emma. I watched the dawn of a golden age full of smelting iron tools and bread and butter happen in my brief existence and know it now to still be going. In my final years, I thanked my aging sister for her contributions in my early years of life and then gave my pants to the son of one of the mothers, who gave her thanks. I hope that my family live on in prosperity.

#88 Re: Main Forum » [Disc] things you don't like about gameplay » 2018-07-29 17:33:03

I like this game a lot. But storage is rather difficult with how a single carrot takes up an entire block which leads to long lines of baskets full of carrots. If there were perhaps a way to make picking up and dropping stuff and storing said items easier and less goofy then I think the game-play would be greatly improved. The lineage ban I understand since people would be tempted to suicide in an attempt to re-spawn back into their old family line which could in turn ruin some else's game experience. Marriage I don't think is something needed or wanted as an official game-play mechanic as it raises issues in regards to consent + incest which are both things Jason stated he wanted to avoid so people could focus on survival.

#89 Re: Main Forum » Fanart - Lilith, Lana and Lacee » 2018-07-29 17:23:08

See this is what I love about this game. It has a simple cartoonist design and basic survival concepts yet it inspires such imagination and wonder. Despite the trolls and the toxicity I sometimes see on the forums and in the games- people are making the world that Jason made into their with the help of the people around them. I love seeing art work like this and stories people write about in regards to the shared experience they had with other players.

There seems to be a bunch of accounts like Havir1931, Secalven, Roure1937, Stolven, and sarasom who aren't on the forums to discuss the game or participate in the community but rather trying to peddle various services and other things involving dubiously acquired identification papers, 'getting a slim body', and 'intensacut forskolin.' Is there anything that can be done to remove accounts such as these?

Thank you to everyone who responded! It’s nice to feel welcomed and that so many people leapt to help and contribute knowledge and resources to a newbie. My computer is, unfortunately, out of commission and I don’t know when it will be back- but as soon as it is I plan to buy and begin playing the game and maybe take up one of those mentoring opportunities some people have offered. Thank you all for your kindness <3

Hey I’ve been shadow stalking this game since March via YouTube and I’m thinking about getting the game soon in light of the family lineage update and start playing. I kind of know how to play but I still don’t know how to do everything despite binge reading the forum and watching YouTube videos. Yet, I don’t want to be a useless carrot muncher who doesn’t know how to play and ends up killing a village and an entire lineage with my own ignorance. Someone who would be willing to mentor me in the ways of not dying and contributing to the continuation or wh family line would be swell. I really love the idea of a family working together to survive and prosper in a harsh unforgiving world, it’s kind of like real life except your family blames you for the divorce and infant mortality is considerably lower.
