Having worked on a game called Rift, I had very different expectations on what was going to be in this update lol.

Pretty much all I heard on discord last night was "JASON REMOVE THIS UPDATE."

Yeah, that's not helpful.

I've been working on this all week, and thinking about it and discussing it with people for many weeks.  Of course, it's impossible to predict exactly what will happen, which is why it needs to be tested live.

Three hours of pain is not then end of the world, folks, in the scope of a game that has been up and running for over 11,000 hours.

There will be many more little hours of pain in the future.  That's the way game development works sometimes.

I realize that you're all just trolling me with how "upset" you seem to get.  For some reason, I keep falling for it.  I'll try to stop falling for it.

I think what would really help is a message that managed expectations of players. For example, many players don't know it's just you. And many players don't come to the forums or even pay attention to updates. They don't know what changed. And most importantly they don't know that what just changed isn't final. I think what would help is like a message on the game screen before I play that says something in red like "Update 251 now LIVE: Note this update is a work in progress. I will be making adjustments based on feedback and fixing bugs over the next few weeks." Or something, any easy to find communication so that the community is told that what is live isn't the end product and info about the dials that you are tweaking to calm people down.

They, we, are passionate about the update only because we care about the game and are worried that the current version makes the game less fun than before.

Can someone explain what's in the patch? What the arc is, what the rift is. I played today and saw a line that I couldn't go though and lived a bunch of painfully hard lives, mostly starving because areas were stripped of resources. Are there patch notes or something? If so where? Thx.

Yes, that to me is a killable offense but like all kills you have to be strategic about it. If you straight up kill them then the town will probably kill you too but if instead you walk around and tell others his name and how he is acting then you are more likely to get others who will be on your side. Even if they don't do anything right away, I guarantee many of us with the zoom out mod will have an eye on him and be watching what he says.

Unfortunately not all the time tho, many people are just complete pacifists no matter what happens or really don't pay attention to what others say and do.

I had one town today where a woman named Lucy (my mom's twin) that would pick up babies and run them into the forest to die. If they survived then she's actively bully them saying they are ugly and fat and retarded and that they should die. And yet the town did nothing. In fact my mother and another dude would say "no, no, Lucy is only joking, she is a good person". Until Lucy took it too far and stabbed a baby, then thankfully someone in town who had an eye on her took that opportunity to kill Lucy.

Sometimes you won't get your revenge but often it just takes patience because griefers and jerks have a different level of morality and they will slip up again.

Oooo I especially like the idea of having specialty being inherited and learned based on your actions and the actions of your parents.

#133 Re: Main Forum » i cant run my game » 2019-07-25 20:23:59

What version of the game do you have? Such as OneLife_v248

Also note, at least for me I have to give permissions EVERY time I update a patch.

#134 Re: Main Forum » i cant run my game » 2019-07-25 19:15:31

We have very little info to go on and we need your help to trouble shoot. If you reply to your post with as much info as possible. Maybe computer specs, platform, where you downloaded the game and where the files are on your computer, what country you are in. We don't know, anything that could help us trouble shoot because we don't know how to fix you yet.

#135 Re: Main Forum » Are the Colorados done? » 2019-07-25 08:08:09

If you want to check just go to the family tree and enter in a name. Then click on the EVE at the top. Then scroll down to the bottom and see when the last member died. If it was recent then they are probably still going.

#136 Re: Main Forum » bEcAuSE iT'S roLePLAy1!11!!!!!!!11!! » 2019-07-24 18:22:55

Agreed! This is one of the worst kinds of griefing. Even if the child was ok with being locked up for roleplay, it's most likely still griefing the town. That's because if the child is "pretending" to be scared and begging "for roleplay" then others don't know that and will react as if it's a real person stuck in there. Now if both parties are open to others about it being roleplay and they don't harm anyone else then go for it, have fun.

#139 Re: Main Forum » My first Apocalypse » 2019-07-23 20:39:07

When I was a new player I though the apocalypse was awful but now that I've been playing longer I can appreciate the fun factor of both sides; being a creator or defender. Compared to building a city (which gets repetitive) this can be an interesting challenge to more advanced players. A night or two ago I was in a city that needed a pump because we'd run out of water but we had people building a car instead. Most likely the city was going to fail because of it but they wanted to help stop the apocalypse and they'd use the car to get there.

I hear the apocalypse sound but I've never gotten an arrow. How do you know where the tower is located?

#140 Re: Main Forum » i cant run my game » 2019-07-23 15:52:55

Make sure you're running the latest version of the game. Also try rebooting your computer.  People can help if you provide more information such as what platform you're playing on. What happens or what do you see when you try to run OHOL, does it get stuck on a specific screen? Have you tried the 2 suggestions above first?

#141 Re: Main Forum » Jobs with a story? » 2019-07-22 06:20:08

I saw another one today: Santa

He had a full red outfit with santa hat. He'd ride around on a horse and cart saying HOHOHO. It was really cute.

#142 Re: Main Forum » asking me if i want to "stay?" just makes me /die » 2019-07-21 22:54:50

I do this and I'm fine with it. It's a way of letting the kid know that this town is going to require work or a lot of travel, or whatever. But I include context such as "I'm traveling far to a bell, want to stay?" where if I didn't say that they might waste both our times to only find out later and kill themselves. If you /die because of it then good.

Sometimes doing the work in the game gets repetitive so I often role-play a character with a job. Same with my children, seems to be more likely that they actually stick around and work.

* Fishermen: I saw an unused fishing hole in town and was a woman so each child I had I'd take them to the ice hole and tell them about how we are a family of fisherman, and that their dad died in a fishing accident. One child ignored the story but 2 others became fisherman; one with a pole and another using a net. Presto, now the town has 2 more food sources.

A few others:
* Wolf child (hunts rabbits)
* Fire Priestess (fire is sacred and must be kept going and stocked)
* Gardeners
* Cobbler (town shoe maker)

What are some role play jobs that you've come across or seen in this game?

Edited to include: Can't believe I have to add this but I'm only asking for productive role-play jobs, not griefing ones like feeding children to bears...

#144 Re: Main Forum » Unpopular opinion » 2019-07-21 17:12:00

I'd love to see a less lethal combat system such as pushing or punching. Yesterday there was a little boy who came into the kitchen and spent his entire life taking on and off his hat to annoy people. In griefing this is minor since it's just clothes he's not hurting anyone but he's bothering many people for an extended amount of time. This continued till he was around eight till someone stabbed him and then I rushing and held the bowl of pads so no one could heal him. However if we could push him out of the room or do something that is non-leathal that maybe stuns him then that would solve the problem without having to murder a kid.

#145 Main Forum » Lilianthal family - The story of an Eve nomad running to a new home » 2019-07-21 00:55:21

I don't tend to play as an Eve because I'm not that much of an expert at starting a city but in this case I was out of lives and this was my last so I was going to play it. I was Eve Lilienthal.

I started running west and found a medium sized town. I was white and they were brown so it was easy to see that I was an outsider. I stayed on the edges to not worry anyone. I approached slowly with a constant smile and heart over my head saying "peace" to see if they would accept me. I began teaching some children to speak my language and an old woman gave me a full set of clothing including a backpack. This old woman is the reason my line survived at all, thank you to whoever you were!

I continued teaching the children when I had a baby girl. One of the little boys I was teaching had to keep repeating himself because I could only partly understand him. It was a little garbled but what he said was something like "You can stay but we will feed your kids to the wolves" so I grabbed my baby girl and ran! I continued west when a bell sounded!

The bell was 3.4 k away. I named my first daughter Bella after the sound of the bell but she ran off and I was unable to save her so I continued alone. On the way to the bell I had two daughters; Lilian and Lilith. I commented that we might not make the town but one of my kids said something like "we might find an abandoned city along the way".

At around 2k from the bell my youngest was bitten by a wolf. Lilian and I consoled her. Her last words were "loveu to"

So now it was just me and Lilian heading towards the bell. We were more efficient now. Being older we could travel longer without stopping for food. We had also gathered a bunch of iron to serve as a gift when arriving at bell town in the hopes that we couldn't be killed on sight.

Now about 0.9 k away from the bell, I realized that I probably would not live long enough to see it and my daughter might also be too old to carry on my line, or she might not be able to find it without my bell marker. She had run with me for like twenty minutes in the hopes that I'd lead her to a new home. That is when I died.

So imagine my delight when I check on the family tree to see that not only did my daughter survive but her only child was a girl named Autumn. For about the first 6 generations, only 1 daughter survived to continue the line.

Based on the last words of generation 7 I can deduce that wherever they lived was expanding (bear attack and someone saying wheat east). Based on the last words of generation 8, they had shrimp. Between generation 8 and 11 there was a population boom due to multiple women giving birth at the same time. The family was peaceful until generation 11. That is when one man murdered another man, his cousin. Probably because when people no longer NEED to fight for survival then drama starts.

Not long after that I was reborn into the town. I couldn't tell if the town was one that my daughter started or found, but it was not a bell town. Which I was glad of because having a bell is dangerous.

Generation 18 was the last generation of the Lilianthal family. Eve Lilianthal: http://lineage.onehouronelife.com/serve … id=4994606

If anyone out there was a Lilianthal I'd love to hear about it. Was the town found or built? What caused the last generation to die? Any good stories in the family?

#146 Re: Main Forum » Abortion and moral relativism in OHOL » 2019-07-20 02:02:33

I think in this game, there are circumstances were I will be ok with killing (or letting others) kill babies. If the child does nothing but grief for their entire existence such as their first words are b*tch, c*nt, racist remarks, talking about killing+trying to get weapons or they spam ill/whistle then go for it, kill em. I will probably wait until they are an adult so I can have community support before I act but I will absolutely support anyone else who kills them, even if it's my kid especially for the racial stuff.

#148 Re: Main Forum » Snitches Get Stitches, Pacifism is Impossible » 2019-07-19 16:05:15

I've found the best way to curse griefers is to play the long game. Don't curse him right away, if you do they will retaliate. So you need to wait. People who grief tend to do it their whole lives and they will do something else dumb. Warn others, if you have children and your direct family to "be wary of NAME" That way when the idiot does something again the community is more likely to act because they have proof AND that person has a bad reputation.

However I agree the system isn't perfect and could be improved.  My idea is that YOUR personal history of being cursed should weight more heavily when you curse others. Be more of a point system. For example:

Joe has never been cursed and played 10 hours of the game so when he curses someone it is worth 10 points.

Sally is a regular griefer and gets an average of 2 curses per full life so when she curses its only worth 1 point.

Jack doesn't grief but is a town defender so when someone is killed, he's likely to step in. Because of this he has been cursed  few times but not often, when he curses someone it is worth 5 points.

Maybe someone needs 20 points total to get into donkey town. Overall a system that is more weighted so that people who tend to have good behavior, their curses are worth more than people who grief.

#149 Re: Main Forum » Your OHOL pet peeves » 2019-07-18 08:27:11

When women don't work and just sit on the fire sucking up food. It is rare that a town NEEDS babies so much to require that. The vast majority of the time the town would be best served by those women working and only stopping once they actually give birth.

When people plant a ton of beans and they end up laying everywhere.

When babies run rather than /die. It bothers me so much that a young baby can outmaneuver me as a full grown adult, they should be much slower. When I run after them I only do so to try and teach them about /die.

#150 Re: Main Forum » THE SOLO FAMILY » 2019-07-17 22:53:35

I was there during this. I was a solo. Several white women came to our village (you and your family) and kept saying the word "kill," that is the ONLY reason we attacked. We wanted peace as well.

I went to your village to check on things and it seemed calm so I talked my village down. That we'd stay peaceful unless provoked. That is when two white women came and massacred us. Thankfully we took her down after she stabbed me.

It's rather disturbing how quick you were to slaughter a village, what did you expect would happen when strangers come and keep saying "kill"?
