So after playing on a custom server with the new changes (3 soil per compost, seeds can be used 2 times) I can say thats its fine with a group of players who know what theyre doing(Which I never  thought wasn't going to be the case) The main concern that I had was time to teach new players and with the double seed use and one extra soil per compost you have gained allot more time. Tomorow im gonna start trying to teach settlements of 3-4 people how to compost and I hope theyll spread it to their childeren aswell. In the end we will see and although not all of us may agree with the change Im happy to see that Jason is actually on top of this and is listening to what is going on!

#127 Re: Main Forum » Looking at the viability of sustainable farms to build villages. » 2018-03-10 03:25:43

with the changes of getting 3 fertile soil from each compost and being able to use seeds twice it should now be allot more possible to use small farms to sustain a population of 4-6 people. Which is a step back but it will atleast give you a chance to teach the new ones.

#128 Re: Main Forum » New update brings new potential for total Civ Collapse. » 2018-03-09 16:14:26

there is already posts about this, but yes at the current time it seems we have been kicked back to a migrating lifestyle since a sustainable farm will fail in 2-3 generations and drain all the natural resources. It is a true shame.

So you respawn a couple of times until you luck into a good village. That's kinda already happening as it is.

If new players luck into a good village they usually destroy it on accident within 10-15 min.

Okay so after hopping into a couple of lives just to see people absolutly destroy all the soil in the area because they have no clue what compost even is. I must really, REALLY!! say that this update is not good for the game. Not only does atleast 70% of the player base have no clue what compost even is. But also because with the new harsh farming mechanics it just forces you to abandon more babies then ever because there is not food. You don't have the time to explain anything because you need to farm! you can't do anything beside Farm!!!  Food just became 99% of the game again instead of the 80% it used to be.

Line it with the bones of newborns.

It already is, Every child that was born to me while building the road was instructed to follow the yellow brick road east. They were told there was a mommy waiting for them on the other side. I watched many of them running down it not knowing they would never make it and that the mommy waiting on the other side meant something else XD

So you guys were the ones who made the road! I found it and thought holy smokes that is a brilliant idea! How did you manage to have enough food to survive building all that!

We had a couple of kids in midgard told them how to farm properly and once in a while came back to midgard to take a cart full of carrots. We were fully clothed so you don't use to much food and theres berries all over the place.

So I was just on a server where someone had made a huge wooden road spanning the map, connecting multiple villages and hamlets. It's amazing how much has happened since I last logged into this game from just last night. I am wondering - who made it? And how???

If it is a massive road from east to west its probably the yellow brick road. It's the latest addition to our network

There is a new major landmark in server 3. the Yellow Brick road travels from East to West and will connect you to Hub-Settlements like midgard and Old peak(other connections still being worked on) so if you are ever in doubt just follow the Yellow Brick Road home and you can find where you are!!

When you've hit the tech ceiling and run out of things to make, you need some grand task to keep yourself busy. Some people have taken up the task of building these roads.

And keeping us busy it is!!!

No the Q thing is something we use to recognize the other people we are building the roads with.

Remember all you avid would be road builders! Only use Wetland trees so you dont starve the area you are providing with roads from useful trees!!!

Gotta get some maps of the other servers

Most of the people in that organised this map have decided not to make one for other servers. Server3 is the server where we meet up with eachother to try and build a big society. However we want to keep the core game experience on the other servers (We dont wan't people to Metagame everywhere)

TLDR: There will most likely not be a map for the other servers out of respect for the games core principles of just not knowing where and to who you are born.

ooo yea, night would be cool. all it'd take is some better colors, more emphasis on settlements, less on biome colors...

for signage, i'm not sure what makes the best evergreen "pixel" at the lowest cost (maybe round stones?), but if we keep it to certain characters, we could get away with a 3x3 grid. OR we just names things a single unique letter.

3x3 for a city called "TOH":

XXX XXX X X
 X X X XXX
 X XXX X X

I've worked it out and it seems the only characters that work on a 3x3 are: C H I J L O T U X Y (and maybe P, F but could be confusing)

CHI, HOL, TOH, XOL, JIX, YOC, OIL, etc. etc. there's enough there to make unique names but they may be confusing to tell apart since the alphabet is so small.

a 5x5 grid would work for most characters if we use single character, so like Milkyway would be:

X X
XX XX
X X
X X

of course that'd mean we'd need to rename some cities to start with unique letters.

The reason the biome colours are the way they are is because we've been using biomes to wayfind. If you spawn outside of the mapped villages you can take a look at the biomes you have around you and find yourself anywhere in that tiny piece of the world. Its how we mapped the cities and its how we keep adding villages to the map.

There is a very lare Village ( i think that everyone was Born there in a game) with many stuff.
On the left side they build a house, they got a farm with animals and a big carrot Plantage.
And my first thought was: oh amazing!
Then my second thought (after i see the carrot Plantage): they are all stupid as fuck. -> and we are all gonna die.

They have maybe 20 carrot lines and in EVERY stuck ONE fucking carrot.
And every grown up woman tell the Baby: do you know the carrot rule?
And i Standing there as a Baby and think ... shit. SHIT.

So i become a thief.
I stole some seeds. Stole earth.
Go away a bit.
Plant 5 carrot seeds in 5 carrot earth ... and go back with the seeds.
And feed them all.
Tell another kid and ...

The shit kid tell the others!
And then i came back ...

And you would not BELIVE what happend!
I came back .. and in EVERY fucking earth line ... is a single carrot Standing!!!!!! AHHHHHHHH!

I stand there. 30 years old. And die.
I can´t handle this.

Reading this just made me smile, Just knowing im not the only one that looks a the farm when hes born. And when you see its a massive 1 carrot farm dies a bit on the inside because you know its doomed.

Saying that it's a terrible idea is not enough - you need something to replace it with.

I've succeeded in replacing 1-carroters with secret-gardeners in most of my village rebirths.
I'll continue to spread secret gardens as the better solution as its built not around everyone knowing it & following correctly, but on the basis that every so often people, or at least a few, just won't.

I don't just say its a terrible idea, I aways explain the maths behind it and that we should build rows not connected for seeds. Some people pick it up and some are just to brainwashed by the 1 carrot virus.

#147 Re: Main Forum » The problem of the one carrot rule! » 2018-03-05 09:10:33

yeah I alway separate the seeding plots from the eating plots, however one carrot rule believers simply don't care. they think they have the golden solution and will just start implementing it on their own. So theres 3 option try to teach them which 50% of the time doesnt work and when that doesnt work you can either watch them ruin your village or kill them.

So as many of you might have known the "Leave 1 carrot in each plot for seeds" rule has spread like wildfire. Every bigger village is doing it and it is one of the reason all of them fail. I know this has been said before and the math has been done by people. However people refuse to listen!! I think we should start activily spreading that the 1 carrot rule is a horrible idea, most people are to stubborn to listen or look at the math. But if enough of us keep repeating it it might just get into their thick skull.

TLDR: We need to stop people from picking from seeding plots because they think they have their golden 1 carrot rule!!

I was born in milkyway the day after we made Utopia and connected it to Midgard @Milkman that where I got the names for the villages from you. You told me the name of the villages we created with the guys! When I was born in MilkyWay it was a prosperous fur trading place. It is now a ruin waiting to be rebuild though. and someone destroyed ALL the milkweed.....

#150 Re: Main Forum » Helpful, simple tasks for new players? » 2018-03-05 06:02:27

The most important thing is to listen to the people already in the village. If you don't you might accidentally eat all the seeding carrots and kill all the people in the process
