Wait who said anything about stabbing people not being good parents?

Spoonwood did. He seems to think the fact that people don't get angry at what he defines as "bad moms" means that people aren't "taking the game seriously" or some nonsense. I hardly can make sense of it myself since his whole premise that women using a horse or not hanging by the nursery are "bad moms" isn't even correct.

#127 Re: Main Forum » Problem: The Apple Can Fall Too Far From The Tree? » 2019-06-04 04:45:03

You don't have to spend time near the nursery. You can raise a kid anywhere. In some ways raising kids while out rabbit hunting is great since you can clothe them as they are born and then bring them back to town dressed.

If you have a horse you can move with the kid back to town with the horse if it isn't far. Not ideal, but there is no reason to avoid things like getting wood by horse just because you might have a kid. Iron is another issue.

As for killing players? I don't even get that. Are you saying you want people to kill players for not being "good" parents? Is that it? How would killing such a person help anything?

Really though I hate standing by a fire and will always raise the kid while doing something if it's possible. And I don't really like being left by the fire either, but I get why people do it.

And the towns are very close. But they are "no relation" -- I had the most surreal experience. I left to start a satellite town. But, came to another town that had the same last name, people looked the same, even some of the details of the towns lay out were similar. I really wondered if Jason had made the world round and finite for a moment until I noticed they were all "no relation" and some kid was bouncing on a sword so I ran before he got old enough to pick it up.

We really need:
-not to have families with the same name at the same time.
-people with the same name via adoption naming need to be in the same family.

Anyway that was really creepy, I knew I ran in only one direction and yet I ended up in the same place... but not really... it was like that star treck episode with the goatees.

Spoonwood wants women to stay in the kitchen making pies. LOL.

If you kill someone who two other people curse it shouldn't count.

Put it back in a clay pit... even if they clay pit was formed by emptying a soil pit for the 2nd time. This is useful if you have a lot of natural soil near the center of town and after using it all up you end up with balls of clay in the center of town. If you don't feel like making plates and bowls just use a shovel to get all the balls and put them back in one of the pits. It looks tidy, and the clay is right in town when needed.

But what if the griefers team up to terrorise nice families?

Currently it's hard for them to do so on purpose without using the twin triplet quadruplet system

I know griefers and team up doesn't sound like they go together but what if?

Somehow I don't think they will be that great at co-operating. And only a small handful of griefers are really into the the game enough to know it super well.

I think the effects of this would be more subtile.

Also some people who kill a lot aren't greifers. They are the people who kill griefers right away. So, they would be there too...

#134 Re: Main Forum » Problem: The Apple Can Fall Too Far From The Tree? » 2019-06-03 23:50:41

It's a really fun idea. And I it would give the people who kill a lot the challenge they deserve (want?)

#135 Re: Main Forum » Lack of Accountability for Irresponsible Moms/Fertile Women » 2019-06-03 16:38:01

I have very rarely enountered a mom who fed me to an animal or who didn't feed me.

(one time she ask "are you Korean" I sad no and she let me starve...)

But, that issue is rare. Most of the moms I've been born to have been great. Often they get me clothing and even better tell me what the town needs or take me with them as they work so I can learn new things. I don't think this is a big issue in the game at all. And frankly, considering how many babies die or run right now I don't think any of these suggestions are needed or good. I don't think there is a problem that needs suggestions.

#136 Re: Main Forum » Suggestion: Bowls/Bucket/Basket uses on Soil/Water are Nonintuitive » 2019-06-03 14:41:38

I recognize the technical difficulties of making this change but I agree that it would help new players a great deal. The current system makes sense once you learn it, but to new players it's not very friendly at all.

I have made a radio and the town had a receiver and transmitter. If someone wanted to make another they can hunt for them.

I put the beans in a bowl at first, but later, like 8 years later I found a little girl emptying the bowl because she needed it for berries (there were plenty of bowls in the town, but I guess she didn't see them.) So I just took them out of town.

At this point I'm like "use it or it goes in the trash" *every* item in the game is useful in some way if you let that bother you you will never clear enough space for the town to get running again. Look at how many tiles *in the center of town* were filled with junk no one was using!

Also if trash areas just out of town become common you'll know to look for any little junky item you need out there before going on a journey for resources.

I once died because I had a rose seed in my hand and couldn't put it down without picking something else up. Clutter is deadly.

I didn't think of paper! I guess, in truth I was too shy to write a poem. Really this was one of my favorite lives in a long while. I was doing a lot, and it was really different and it inspired me to imagine a fairly deep story for the things that were happening.

Deciding to stay alive when I normally wouldn't opened a whole lot of posibilites.

For short range this system is necessary but for long range i agree it should be about skill and not aimbot.

Then combat would be more interesting long range VS short range.

Also dying in one hit isn't that interesting imo and the medical system still doesnt allow to carry pads.

You can now at least move a bowl of pad in a cart. But yeah, some way to wrap pads (sterile gold foil?) and put them in a bag of apron would be great.

So basically tying tech levels to generations. Its fun that it ensures someone always have something to do but two issues

The tech tree is not vertical enough to sustain this. I heard a bunch of good players can reach diesel pumps by generation 6!!! . So if one were to say allow engines only by 25th generation the early game will fall flat faster.

I don't think that any tech essential for survival should be treated this way for just this reason. I mean it's fun to go fast. These should be bonuses:
-getting more iron from mines
-kiln stays hotter longer
-can make colors of dye for clothing that no one else can make

Bonuses.

LOL sausage town means it's only dudes left and no more kids, but people stay and do stuff anyway for some reason. It's very peaceful. But can feel a little hopeless.

#142 Re: Main Forum » Problem- Cannot Eve » 2019-06-02 04:12:43

I agree with spoon? (I've been mad at him all day so I'm surprised myself) But yeah,  there is a big difference between having your town die because someone else *choose* to kill it vs. someone choosing just not to live there at all.

Killing people in a town takes time and effort. It makes you wonder what you did to deserve so much hate from someone. They had to put at least 20-40 min in to ruining the fun town you wanted to build. Even though I know griefers are just amusing themselves it still hurts. I think "why do they hate me so much? What did I do wrong?" I second guess my every action in the game... was I rude to them as a child? Could I have done a better job?

When I kid uses /die I'm a little disappointed but it's not personal. They didn't invest time to hurt me. And I don't feel I have any right to their time.

Also as spoon explained if you are dead your game is over. You won't see that town again for a long time. If you are like me and play the game as a break and don't often play back to back "I'll play one game then go back to doing housework, programming whatever" it means my fun time is over early.

Now I do think that murder belongs in the game. And I think it's less of an issue now than when the sword was new, but we would be in better shape with the old curse system.

So I'm curious to see how people rank these various game types. Put them in order from the ones you like best to those you like least. Feel free to add anything I missed.

Game Types:

-Eve in the wild
-Eve near a town with people
-Eve finds an abandon camp or town and builds it up again
-Eve's kid or grand kid in the wild
-Eve's kid or grand near a town with people
-Eve's kid or grand finds an abandon camp or town and builds it up again
-Town with sheep and no pump
-Town with pump and no engine
-Town beyond repair and you must migrate
-psudo-Eve (runaway)
-psudo-Eve's kid
-Town under attack
-Raiding a populated town
-Looting an abandon town to make a new one
-Two towns find each other and build a road
-Multi-family peaceful town
-Multi-family murder town
-sausage town

------------------
My rank:

I Like These About Equally:
-Eve in the wild
-Multi-family peaceful town
-Two towns find each other and build a road
-Eve's kid or grand finds an abandon camp or town and builds it up again
-Eve's kid or grand kid in the wild
-town with engine post water crisis
-Eve near a town with people
-Eve finds an abandon camp or town and builds it up again
-Looting an abandon town to make a new one
-Town with pump and no engine
-Eve's kid or grand near a town with people

Like these a bit less:
-Town beyond repair and you must migrate
-Town with sheep and no pump
-psudo-Eve (runaway)
-psudo-Eve's kid
-sausage town

Hate. Don't want to play:
-Multi-family murder town
-Town under attack
-Raiding a populated town

Seriously, I would do anything to just arabic numerals instead of spelling everything since some people mis-read VI and IV

#145 Re: Main Forum » Down to three families » 2019-06-02 03:30:26

IDK. I've seen a lot of big towns die. The fire goes out, there are no carrots so no soil the berries die, keeping a town going is just as hard in the late game as in the early game, but most people just don't see it that way... which is why most towns die ... they may be discovered by and Eve and revived ... but to me the real challenge is to have one unbroken line. To do enough in my life that even if the next two generations do nothing one more serious person can bring it back.

I don't build cars or planes I often do the same tasks I do in the early game:

-gather wood
-gather kindling
-make kerosine
-keep the berries alive
-plant crops
-make pies
-make soup

It always feels super urgent to me since I know that people aren't really watching... I was in 4 late stage towns today NONE of them had more than 2 pieces of firewood near the fire. In one the fire went out even though I brought wood.

So I feel like I need to watch everything. The fire, the compost, get the trash out and the wood in.

When you clean a town just a little people suddenly start working. The secret is to not be too worried about taking something "useful" out of town. If it was there when you were a baby and it's still there when you are 25 no one is using it. Dump it.
KszY5v2.jpg
I used to not take items like balls of clay or adobe out of town, but now I do. The space matters more than the off chance that someone might make a bowl or wall. Also: tomatoes are griefing. LOL-- anyway just look at how much space this clutter was taking up. I took the items six at a time and brought back wood each time. It's a good system to get a town de-clogged.

I moved all of this stuff in my last life and people went from chatting at the fire to smithing and baking.

IDK if it was taking the clutter away but I've seen it work that way a few times. It's like magic.

When a family "tops out" the tech tree should they just die out?

Is there a cistern by every oil pump?
Is it full?
Is there enough wood by the fire?
Is there ice cream?
Photos?
Are the buildings all complete?
Are the farms optimized?

If it's a mess there is plenty to do. Help clean it up.

In a way instead of "leveling up" your character you'd "level up" your whole lineage by lasting long enough.

#149 Re: Main Forum » When was the Last Time... » 2019-06-02 00:42:31

My mom got her PhD (in abstract algebra) while pregnant with me and defended her thesis while nursing me. (she had me with a woman in the hall and had to pop out to feed me so the story goes)

If that isn't war IDK what is.
