I always seem to end up in these only-two-brothers-left type of situations. Anyway, this time it was Amos and Lukas Star. We developed the settlement out from basically nothing. We ended up with a 4 x 3 berry plot, lots of milkweed, and a healthy amount of corn. After Amos passed suddenly, I decided to honor him with a marked grave. It took me ages to make the B and I was JUST about done making the mallet when I died.

I wrote warning on that sign. I was part of the Queen lineage. There were a lot of murders and bear deaths when I was there, so it's kind of just a general "be vigilant" warning. That and I didn't have letters to spell anything more meaningful.

Wow, seriously?

That doesn't even make sense. Why would leaving a seed on the ground change what color of rose it produces? I guess it's good to know, but it's not intuitive at all.

I ran off in one of my recent lives to try rose gardening. I took a basket with a carrot and a bowl and left. I'm not sure if it's already known how the rose colors work, but I was trying to figure it out.

I was thinking the color could be random and a small percentage of wild roses end up giving you white roses. Of the ten wild rose seeds I planted, all ten ended up being pink. I then thought that maybe the color changes with each generation of roses, so I started planting rose seeds from the first gen, and then from the second gen, everything turned out pink.

I guess it would make more sense for the white rose to be random, and then for that color to be passed on in that particular rose seed. Has anyone found white roses yet? Curious if anyone else has had more luck.

Piles of firewood instead of every tile on a swamp littered with the stuff? A dream.

I completely agree that storage needs to be reworked. What kind of janky box only stores FIVE carrots?

#6 Re: Main Forum » Long live Queen Duchess and King Rarity! » 2018-05-24 18:55:14

I'll repost from the other thread, so the whole family story is in one place:

I was King Rarity. Your mother and I were fated lovers and our story started generations before you.

We were Todd and Celine, who met while working the carrot field in that very town. Todd was a
peasant then, but Celine still loved him and married him. Todd ventured out to gather stones, for the
town had plenty of ponds, and he thought creating cisterns would ensure that the people would have
water for centuries to come. When he returned, his Celine was nowhere to be seen. He lived out
his life improving the city's water system, always hoping he would catch one last glimpse of her.

Generations later, Todd was reborn as Rarity. It was beautiful to see his cisterns being utilized, the
one next to the pie station, another next to the berries, and three more near the carrot farm. Rarity
donned the crown as a young man, and immediately caught the eye of Duchess. On that same carrot
plot all those generations ago, Duchess asked to marry the King.

"My Celine asked to marry me, exactly where you stood."

"I am Celine. LOL."

Rarity looked into her eyes and knew it to be true. They were soulmates, destined to meet again and
again, in this life and all the next. But this life would be a good one, Duchess would not meet the same
fate as Celine, the King made sure of it. He knew his life's work was complete when he first laid eyes
on Jewel. She was the future that Todd and Celine never got.

Mom, why'd you leave me?

I was Gwen.  You gave birth to me in the middle of the woods, and wanted to return home with me.  Unfortunately, you hadn't set a home marker, and we got horribly lost.

For years, we wandered the lands looking for our home.  During that time, you had my little sister Hope.  We both diligently followed you around, searching for our homeland.

You were a good mother - you made sure we ate, and instructed us to carry food with us wherever we went.  And for years, we continued to run and search. We ran for so long that I was about to have my own children.  I told you if I had a baby, I would abandon it.

And then it happened.  My first born child came, and I said goodbye to her.  But when I turned around, you were gone.  I frantically called out for you, but you couldn't hear me because you were already too far away.  I was devastated.  My first born had starved, and my mother and little sister had left me behind while I recovered from the birth.

I continued searching for you before I met my fate with a rattlesnake.

This was genuinely one of the saddest deaths I have had.

I was Todd, your uncle/dad. I was married to Celine but couldn't find her after I came back from a rock gathering trip. She never made it back, unfortunately. We reunited later, down a few generations, as King Rarity and Queen Duchess and she filled me on what happened.

I'm sorry you didn't get to see our town. I wasn't aware Celine had any kids either!

My only question for Rarity, is what was your family? I couldn't find you in the tree at all. Was this actually two different families getting "married?" If so, that's even cooler. Thank you.

Duchess and Rarity were second cousins, they had different grandmothers. We all came from Eve Lola, but somewhere along the line we lost our last name.

I was born to a weird Eve who didn't have any type of camp set up. She waited for me to age up, then when I brought rope to her, she made a lasso with it. I stopped trying to make a camp, and just hung out with her eating berries with our lasso. We would move up a few screens every time berries ran out. Eventually we moved up far enough that we found a desert and we caught a horse. We took turns holding the horse while eating berries.

Gladiators duels could be very interesting for the survival of populations in general and not only for roleplay attemps. When there is a conflict because some folk stole the wool of someone else, the two guys could fight in the arena instead of make a vendetta on 3 generations. And also if some griefers like battles and think themselves in a pvp game (i encoutnered a few like that), they could satisfy their blood lust in these organized battles.

In some way it could be a mediation and regulation tool.

I think it's an absolutely crucial next step in developing some sort of culture. Each civilization needs its own sets of traditions. For some it's a monarchy passed down through the matriarchal line, but certainly this type of death match should be developed and encouraged as one type of tradition.

It helps break down the monotony, and gives people a way to blow off some steam, but it also helps develop a kind of history that's passed down through the lineage. For example, you can tell your children all about your great uncle Willie, who took on five other warriors and never lost, and then pass on to them the very knife he used in those fights. This type of activity create a bigger idea of what your village is and how you identify yourself in that life. Your great uncle was a proud warrior, and you strive to honor him when you become of age. In turn, your triumphs are sung by the children that watched you compete, and a tribe of fighters are born.

Now expand that to the future, when villages are more developed and there's interaction between large towns. Your town has its own unique culture, and prides itself on its prowess in battle. No man or woman fears death in your village, because death is glory. And so you raid the next town, because they're little wienies who don't know how to fight. Boom, a war. Not because you want to steal their carrots, but because this is the culture your town has developed.

Having unique traditions (beyond just death matches) encourages people to bond more closely with their town and their family, and it makes each life its own story. Encourage traditions, teach it to your children.

I made a trash pit sheep pen today, with home markers one space diagonal from the corners, and I had a lamb FLY across my screen over the two tiles and right into its eating animation on a patch of carrots, then it flew right back into the pen. It was mid-transition, and scared the shit out of me. You know how it has that hopping animation as it transitions? It was in that animation as it flew over two tiles, and it looked like the craziest ass sheep ever.

Yes, the Spartan blood runs in you.

For future duels, I'm going implement the following, given I'm in a big enough town:

1. Basket of food outside the ring, so fighters can eat right before, and spectators don't have to run off to eat.
2. Crown for the champion.
3. Bigger ring for 2 v 2, possibly.
4. Eventually a match with a bear in the ring.

Hope Fester had a dream. A dream that two warriors would step into an arena, as equals, and
fight to the death with honor. Her village was large and bustling and as a child, she would run
through the empty berry bushes envisioning a brighter future for her people. Not one where she
would just contribute another dozen pies, but one where fighters would leave a legacy in the
memories of all that witnessed their brave feats. One where people felt joy and excitement
beyond the daily grind of the carrot farm.

As Hope grew older, she had her first born, a boy she named Fighter -- a mix up resulted in him
being renamed Fields.

As he came into the world, she took him in her arms and whispered, "Let's make a gladiator
ring. Death match!"

Fields looked at her, and in that moment, she knew that it was her blood coursing through his
veins, for he wanted nothing more than to make that a reality.

"Y"

Hope raised many more sons, even some almost as eager as Fields. Some of them helped
her construct the gladiator ring, but it was Fields that stood by her from his birth. He brought
her pies as she built exits into the ring, all the while voicing his excitement.

And so it was decided that once the ring was built, weapons would be brought over, and then
fighters and spectators would be recruited. Fields and Hope mused at the thought of bringing
a bear into the ring eventually.

There would be some ground rules, of course. Only volunteers, and no children or fertile women,
unless they truly were ready for death.

Alas, the people of their town were of the most cowardly variety. No one would volunteer.
Perhaps they were so entrenched in a routine of pie and sheep, they could no longer see a
different life. It was then that Hope became old, and she knew that she would have to be the
first gladiator.

"Who will take me on?"

Fields, still the ever loyal son, followed her as she beckoned the crowds.

Finally, from among the spineless masses, came a challenger. Her name was Jiles Fester, a
young woman who had grown disillusioned of life in the town. Her weapon of choice, a knife,
still slick with blood from the morning's mutton carving.

Hope quickly fashioned an arrow using the stick that had marked home for her all her life. She
then grabbed a bow, ready to embrace glory, whether it be in life or in death.

Fields cheered from outside the ring. It was difficult to tell now, whether this gladiator battle was
Hope's dream, or if it was his. A son that would make any mother proud. Nervous, but excited
nonetheless, Fields began the countdown.

From two opposite corners of the ring, the fighters took their places. At the final count, they
began circling each other feverishly. Jiles with some quick early stabs that barely missed the
older, but still agile, Hope. As everyone watched on, Hope aimed her bow, and released an
arrow, but it was too slow.

She had to pick up her arrow, but it would mean death if she stood still for a moment too long.
Hope lunged for the arrow, rolling out of the way of another close slice. She drew her bow again,
but this time fumbled and dropped both the bow and arrow.

Hope was doomed. Unarmed, in a pen with Jiles, skillfully wielding her blade. The two women
wove in and out, and when she saw an opening, Hope snatched her weapon back off the ground.
Perhaps her mother truly did have foresight in naming her.

As the two fighters neared their breaking point, Hope caught Jiles in a corner, and unleashed her
arrow. A hit. Jiles let out a scream as she began bleeding out.

And so it was over. Jiles laid down, a brave and glorious fighter. One whose name will be
remember through all of history. Hope knelt down and paid respect to the worthy opponent.

"My dream came true."

She stepped out of the ring, and the world seemed just a little brighter. But it was then that she
finally saw that Fields had starved to death, perhaps never even having witnessed the culmination
of the fight. Her heart broke.

A distant relative, Ichiro, offered Hope a horse parade. She accepted, and the two of them rode
proudly through town. It was a glorious battle, but a bittersweet one. Fields had been her heart
and soul, a mirror of her most lofty dreams. She had wished so desperately that he too would have
had the chance to take up her bow.

Hope spent the rest of her old age reminiscing with Ichiro, and telling her tale to any child that
would listen, hoping they would continue the tradition of the Death Match.

Thanks to everyone who participated, this was so much fun. I was getting so bored of all the big
cities and wanted to try something new. Fields, I did not deserve such a wonderful son, and I hope
I brought you some joy as well. My other sons, as well, especially the one who answered "ofc" when I
asked if you wanted to do a gladiator fight.

Jiles, awesome job, thanks for fighting with me. You gave me some good scares when I dropped the
bow not once, but twice.

Ichiro, thanks for the victory lap around town. Horse rides are great.

I've had this happen in multiple lives now. Sometimes, as I'm picking something up, I will go invisible. I'm fairly certain I'm only invisible on my screen, since no one freaks out when it happens. I will stay invisible unless I move or perform an action. I've had this happen when I'm picking berries, picking up a basket, etc.

I was Jupiter Sol, but I think Morti might be mistaking me for another child? I spent most of my childhood hunting rabbits and making my backpack. Once I got back in town, Persephone asked me to make some water skins, but we didn't have any milkweed, so I started a milkweed farm. It was during this time that people either starved or got killed by that bear. I went out and made three arrows at some point, but the bear was gone by then.

After that, I was doing some farming, and eventually switched over to forging since Mars and I didn't go through very much food. I ended up making a file, chisel, and saw, and got our first cart made. Mars died right before I dug our first well.

I just lived another 60 years as Jupiter Sol. All of our girls died really early on, and it was just my brother and me for a very long time. Mars started on the flooring and stone walls, and I continued making more tools (thanks for the head start, mom!) and made a cart and a well. We worked on our own projects, silently for the most part, passing each other every now and then. Then, one day I just found Mars dead by the wall, the backpack I made him on the floor. I didn't get to say my goodbye, but you did a great job bro. I'm glad we got to live out our old age together.

On a related note, sometimes I'll just be walking through town and my backpack turns to shit and suddenly pies everywhere. And then I'm just on the floor trying to pick up all the pies and I don't know what to do with them. Kinda like this:

Some of the worst babies I've kept were Q babies. I've had toxic players who yell racial slurs at people when they do something incorrectly and mass murderers.

On the other hand, I've had some really great experiences with new players who genuinely want to learn and contribute. I'd rather spend 5 minutes going over basics with someone and encouraging them to continue to foster a good community.

#24 Re: Main Forum » Good times. » 2018-04-30 18:14:10

When you're born to a mother in OHOL, they are taking care of you because they are assuming you will contribute to the town in some way. People farm and feed you because they're under the same assumption. There's this kind of unspoken social contract that you're entering into. This is why I don't understand why people brag about destroying villages and killing people. Yeah, great, you've subverted people's expectations of you, but it's not some insane feat.

It's like if I walk into a Starbucks, and a guy just takes a massive steaming shit in the middle of the floor, looks me straight in the eyes, and asks me to acknowledge his accomplishment. Yes, I see you there, squatting next the the counter with your wiener dangling and some backsplash on your clothes because you're probably not getting enough fiber in your diet. But, am I impressed? Scared? I don't know. I mean, we're all here for some coffee and you're just ruining it by "living your life" and wafting your fecal stink all over the place. It's not something any of us are really expecting, and no one is really sure why you're so proud of yourself, but...okay?
