Which is precisely why I said mid to long term benefits. Short term it makes sense to favor daughters and few children but once somewhat established it actually hurts the civ to have too many females over males because new and returning players will have an increased chance to spawn in camp. You could always just kill all the children but it gets a little insane after a while and you need some replacements for age population if you want to continue the civilization.
Edit: One fun thing to do is to try to survive as a male with a good mother hiding you. You can always come back later and slaughter the villagers that wanted you dead.
Mid to long term benefits are if they know what they are doing they serve as population control with the benefit of a positive net gain in productivity. If your civ has some females popping out children your population should remain relatively constant and not starve itself. If you have a disproportionate female population it's easy to stave yourselves when the next gen explosion happens on populated servers. Fewer women means less babies, which means stable population.
