I took a long break from playing One hour One Life in 2023. At the start of my hiatus there was a community competition for the Discord banner. The competition was a great idea and it stuck with me. I knew I couldn't participate at the time.
Having wished I had entered it I created my own idea of what I would have done for the banner. I really loved the idea of nesting dolls made from OHOL animals. Immediately I knew I wanted the second to last animal to be the goose. The thought of getting to use it's position to make the goose beheaded really tickled me. Seemed like, though a little morbid, the perfect bit of OHOL silliness. First this sketch sat for months collecting dirt and coffee stains. I told myself I'd turn it into a watercolor but I never did.
Last week I played with so many bots, it was very disheartening. This game was an art piece because of it's uniqueness. Each player's interactions made it this way. The NPCs take away from that experience. I had imagined the game dying in a way, me being the only one left on big server with no one to birth just Eve chaining. I had never imagined I would be stuck birthing or building for npcs/bots. Completely ruins the game for me. Which is probably for the best because I have been, at times, unhealthily emotionally attached to this game.
Reflecting on that I wanted to complete my OHOL inspired art piece. I think OHOL was an amazing civilization simulator. Easily held me captivated and was my favorite game for years.
Decided to take my sketch and turn it into a stamp. I've been practicing carving on linoleum and making little stamps but this is by far the most complicated thing I've done. I wish I would have done it differently so I could have achieved the fine details more easily but all in all I think it turned out cute. It wouldn't have won the contest, fairly so, but I still wanted to share my little art with those of you who shared the OHOL experience with me.

I agree I am looking at this through the scope of my own experience. Which is something I pointed out when I talked about the cost of groceries possibly being different... or currency value. I suggested however that this could be used as a base idea. A thought to provoke finding items you can produce at home for a fraction of the cost.
I did not ask the person what city they lived in. My ideas are based on what I would do being in their situation. Being stagnant when you feel overwhelmed by your situation will not help you with progression. I didn't factor in time, or gas used to cook the bread. i didn't even factor in the pinch of sugar you would need to feed each yeast portion. I didn't want to bluntly or say in such a crass manner but; if the person has electric for their computer, internet (stolen or paid for, who knows) and time to cause chaos for others via the internet then they have time to make bread... or get a new hobby.
JORIOM It's legal in 48 states of the US to collect your own rain water. There is no law against gathering water from public drinking fountains in the US, many have spouts for water bottles in the US. Though I imagine if you were gathering a large amount often this might become a problem. We already gathered that I may be small minded and writing this from my own perspective.. don't know what else I can say to you. Didn't really expect anyone to reply to this post.
To the person this post is intended for please do not think I am encouraging you to do anything illegal. Consider this friendly conversation not legal, health or financial advice.. I may not have the best idea for you but apply this thought process to how you can help yourself. Find a way to hold yourself accountable to how your social interaction are turning out.
I hold myself accountable that I posted this on a public forum where other's will find it necessary to chime in....Once again, I wish we could have continued this conversation just you and I.

Dear person whom I would like to maintain some privacy for,
I was your mother, Liz, in 2HOL on Wednesday. I know you are here and the ohol discord as well. I was sad that you did not stay to continue our conversation. I had so much to say but was limited by age and chat mechanics. I would have given you my attention for the full two hours.
I will begin our conversation again with the original topic; Having the desire to be social but having every social interaction turn out negative or chaotic. Continue to practice socializing. Hold yourself accountable for how successful or unsuccessful your interactions are. Ask yourself what you can do to set things off in a positive manner the next time you are presented with a similar opportunity.
When lacking attention or social interactions for too long any kind of attention will provide this type of person with a small dopamine boost to the brain. With negative interactions you will receive your dopamine fix but you may turn off your peers from further socializing. With positive interactions you open up the possibility for more long term social connections, meaning long term dopamine boosts.
You mentioned having a sense of humor some may find distasteful. Perhaps comedy is not the topic for when you are engaging in new social interaction with unfamiliar people. Hobbies can be a good topic of conversation. Talk about shared hobbies or the desire/interest to find new hobbies. You expressed not having a lot of hobbies but mentioned a game I had never heard of. I'm sorry, in the urgency of our conversation I can't remember the name of the game. If you find that no one wants to talk about the topic of a specific game try to keep topics broad when you're first starting out. Assess if the conversation is moving with a positive flow or if you need to change the topic. So instead of going directly to the topic of your favorite game ask the person what their hobbies are. People like to talk about themselves, it makes them feel comfortable. Use this as an opportunity to get to know that person and find topics of interest you have in common.
Second topic we talked about that I couldn't elaborate on; Being born ugly. I explained to you that overt beauty is rare and fades. Attraction has a lot to do with confidence and hygiene. If you have poor hygiene you will not feel your most confident. You explained that poverty stood in the way of your ability to take showers regularly. Poverty is something I understand extremely well.
You brought up a very honest and valid point "if I can hardly afford bread I can not afford showers regularly". To this I suggested natural water gathering, an idea you said you'd rather kill yourself than do.
This is a choice some people make, one that saddens me. From our conversation I believe this to be a very poor choice for you. You are standing in the way of your own personal growth. It's easy to say "I was born ugly" because then you get to hold yourself a victim of the situation. Then you put yourself in the perspective that life is happening to you, that you are only reacting to life. I challenge you to work on changing your perspective. You are creating your future and the future of other's around you through your actions. No one ever says "I was born poor so there's no point in having a job" this is the same for your hygiene and "being born ugly".
Natural water gathering is when you collect rainwater. This can be done even in a city environment. Do you have a fire escape or a window that you could hang a bucket from? You were worried about the water quality. Use 1/8 teaspoon of bleach per gallon of water to keep your natural water cleaner. You know what's grosser than showering in natural water.. a swampy butt. This water can NOT be used for your teeth but can be used for showering and laundry. I will include a picture of the "camp shower" I brought up in our conversation. You don't have to use it outside. You can use this inside, hang it in your shower. Stand in a basin or tub and collect the runoff from washing your body. This runoff water can then be used for laundry.
Don't think collecting natural water is a possibility? What about public water? You mentioned living in a city. Could you not find a public drinking fountain to fill up a couple of gallon jugs at, or even a public restroom. Two gallons of water can fit in a backpack pretty discreetly. How would someone know you weren't collecting drinking water for a long walk?
Good hygiene is more important than overt beauty and it's something you can hold yourself accountable to rather than a victim of. Consider what I've said.. for good for health, self esteem and maintaining social engagements.
Lastly
You mentioned hardly being able to buy bread. Have you considered making your own bread? If you are lacking hobbies, bread making could be a new one for you. Processed foods are always more expensive than homemade ones. I'll use this photo below to elaborate what I mean;
On the left I have the ingredients I would need to make the product on the right.
Buying the product of the right I would spend $1.74 per pound. If you purchased the individual ingredients (costing $6.18) you could easily make 5 loaves of bread and still have half of your yeast left over. This would put the bread you made at $1.23 per pound... cheaper and you have left over product to use for the future.
I understand you might not have the same price for groceries or even the same currency as I do but use this as an example of how to processing your own foods can save money.
I wish for you more positive social interactions. Humans are social by nature. We tend to be anthropomorphic when we are lonely. We humanize animals for pets and search for a face in the moon. May you work towards creating peace in your life where there is currently chaos.
Wishing you the best,
Lizzee
Doug,
That was an unnecessarily long comment. What a way to poopoo someone's hook to the game...
Lilyfox,
That was lovely. Don't listen to Spoon being a wet blanket. Role-play your heart out as long as you can work and be productive while doing it. This is a crappy survival game and a crappy farming/job simulator. The roleplay aspect of it, even if unintended by the developer, is the most heartwarming and heartbreaking part of this game. Don't let Spoon or Jason(who doesn't play his own game) tell you how to play it.
1) If you could sum this game up in one word, what would it be?
Philotimo
2) If you could sum up this game in one sentence, what would it be?
I can't sum it up in one sentence, instead I will define Philotimo to the best of my ability. Philotimo translates to love of honor, or friend of honor. It's meaning can not be summed up easily, sorta like this game. Philotimo instead is an idea for a way of life. It means choosing to do what is brave or kind when there is no reward to be earned from it. It is treating every individual you come across as though they were of your own flesh, as if they were your own child or grandmother. Philotimo is putting the needs of many above your own personal desires or importance. Philotimo is work, love, pride, honor, and altruism. So everytime in game when we create things with pride for the next generation to inherit this is philotimo. That baby you adopted who was abandoned at the fire, that was an act of philotimo. When someone picks up a bow and attempts to save the village from a bear knowing they will surely die and hurt their own gene score.. this is philotimo.
Without philotimo this game would fall apart.
3) If you were going to give this game a slogan, what would it be?
Yum is good, Meh is bad.
4) If you could add one thing to the game, what would it be?
New players/more players.
5) if you could remove one thing from the game what would it be?
Property fences so we could stop hoarding our best work away from each other.
6) If you could choose the mascot for this game, what would it be?
Twisted as he already is the mascot for the game.
7) If we were to vote a prom queen & king of ohol, who would they be?
I'm not a good dancer and prom was a long time ago for me... I'm going to change the question to;
"whom do I vote as the Daddy and Mommy of the game?"
I would nominate Spoon as the Daddy, couldn't think of a person more fitting of that title. As for the community mother I would nominate Morti. This is not meant as an insult to Morti, I suppose I could have nominated two daddies. I couldn't think of anyone in this community who has been mother to more people than he. I've also seen Morti tell people he loves them more times than they ever heard from their own mother.
8) How many hours have you played, what keeps you playing or what made you quit?
1,300 hours or so... what kept me playing was all of you guys who played it along with me.
9) What was your favorite moment or memory while playing?
Too many to list. Maybe soon I will post some good stories to the forum here.
10) What was your worst memory while playing this game?
I want to say when I was griefed or when I witnessed others griefing but this would be untrue. My worst memories are when I have caused others, in game, pain through my own actions.
This is true, Awbz is still working with the update. I haven't needed to update the Awbz mod in so long.
Jason make a new recipe. Potato soup. Fill a crock with uncooked potatoes add an onion, garlic and a bowl of cream. The crock must then be cooked and stirred with a stomper spoon.
"Nope, don't like that" in my best Michael Scott impression

I won't try to persuade you into creating peace as I already know you to be a person who delights in creating chaos for others.
Who hurt you Fish?
Do you need a hug?Good question, how about this, you find out the answer and I'll sit here patiently waiting for my hug.
Also, I'm fish, nice to meet you, and you are?
I think I found the solution to who hurt you. Look within. We are often our own worst enemy and stand in the way of our own healing and personal growth. Still want that hug or nah?
As for who am I? No one of any real importance. I don't derive fun or excitement from notoriety.
It's almost like people are playing a game they downloaded, how they choose to play it. I see no issue here.

DestinyCall I won't debate the semantics of the term "griefing" with you. As you know it's not really my point here. I think we agree that killing should be reserved for "the most extreme offenses". Who am I to say that hate speach isn't amongst the most egregious of offenses? You're correct in saying that I can't retell the entire story here. As I was busy in my own work there is no way I could have caught every aspect of these other player's lives. I understand that each leader is only given their leadership role based on their gene score which is ever changing for everyone one. Not everyone who is given power, even if just for an hour, is going to use it wisely.
If I could talk personally to the leader of this scenario I would try to dissuade them from acting so rashly in the future. I would also love to talk to the homophobe and find out why they have hate in their heart. I suppose that's why I turned here to make my plea. We can help to create peace or help create chaos. Both can be contagious. Others see our actions and mimic them. I hope to persuade anyone to consider creating peace, especially when you most feel like creating chaos.
I mean, I'm sorta skeptical as to how valuable I am to a town most lives. I think what provoked me to say something is how often I see the leadership role get abused. If I as a non leader wanted to make a decision to kill someone they would have to convince a few others to take up their cause. As a leader if you want to make an emotionally driven decision to kill someone you can easily do so without the help of others. This gives the one person in the leadership role the ability to be everyone's judge and jury or even the ability to go on a murder spree with little repercussions. I just want my little BBs to grow up in a place where everyone isn't stabing each other. That way they choose a life of kindness and creativity because that's what surrounds them. Not bloody bodies, violence begets more violence.
Are you writing about a player named Tony Phoenix?
If so, this player got the arrow not because of a foul tongue but because he kidnapped an baby and ran away with it.
This is treated as an attempted murder.
After that, he did not explain his actions, he did not want to leave despite his exile and warning.
All of this was the only possible way of removing a potentially dangerous unit.If you are writing about someone else, ignore it.
No I'm speaking about an event that happened in the Kraut family today.
I agree that kidnapping children would be a grievance against the town. I think most people are very annoyed by this and I wouldn't have said anything had they chosen to stab a kidnapper.
uh... I pointed out that both people are griefing in this situation. I guess I should have said "two wrongs don't make a right" The analogy I used is offensive because the topic of slavery and homophobia is offensive. They make people feel unsafe. Which is not cool and something I'm not trying to promote by this post. I did however compare the homophobic person to a child (someone lacking maturity), a griefer, an instigator, and someone lacking compassion as well as a person full of ignorance. I never once said that the person was a "good citizen" I only wanted to point out the life the person was living up until that point. They were not making themselves out to be a constant nuisance they just made one, what most people would agree, not cool comment. Just like the leader made one, not cool, rash decision to stab a useful worker. I think I would describe this citizen as being useful not "good". The leader's decision might not have helped the longevity of their town and at your suggestion this was made because there is no mute button or chat filter. My personal reaction would be to curse the bigot in hopes to not have such a hateful person as my child.
So while one guy gets off on being a jerk and working people up with his hate speach... The other guy gets off on killing said jerk because he thinks it makes him altruistic.... and all in the mean while everyone else in the town dies out because these two people think that two wrongs will make it right.
I stand by the sentiments of "can't we all be kind and live long?' I also stand by the idea that we should all try to make educated choices towards the longevity of our towns... isn't that the point of the game?
Stabbing someone because you don't like the words coming out of their mouth is not an appropriate response. Especially if this person has been an asset to their community. My last life I watched a "leader" stab a player who had spent their whole life gathering wood and smithing tools because they made a homophobic slur. This is not any form of justice. The person made a vulgar one time comment. They were not carrying on or distracting others, until they got stabbed. They were not intentionally wasting resources. They were making an effort to add value to the family/community. Killing this person and claiming it was in the name of justice is a wildly off balanced form of justice. One that really isn't helping the community/family in the long term. Violence begets violence.
I do follow the discord and I see many of you speaking of terrible childhoods. Perhaps you didn't have a lot of tender guidance growing up or maybe you're still growing up. Aunt Liz is here to give you some wisdom. Words do not hold the same power as violence. Words can be crazy powerful and can leave permanent marks on people or society as a whole. Your hands will eventually manifest what your mind spends all it's time on so it's important to have positive thoughts. But nothing in life is more permanent than death.... the two are not even comparable.
I want you to think of the two following scenarios:
The first,
If you have siblings this is an easy concept to grasp. Think of when your sibling has purposely messed with your personal bubble. Like a finger wagging in your face taunting you "I'm not touching you." This infuriates you, providing your sibling with a euphoria, having succeeded in pissing you off/griefing you. With this anger you strike out and hit your sibling, but only as your mother turns to catch you hitting your sibling. She did not see your plight. She just witnesses your violence. The most often reaction is that she will smack you. She will tell you "you should know better" or "you are bigger" but the truth is violence begets violence. The only way to stop violence is to stop teaching other's to use it as a tool.
If your parent/s beat you or hurt you, I'm sorry. I truly hope you can heal and become the victor of your situation. BUT CAN WE PLEASE STOP POINTLESSLY MURDERING PEOPLE IN FRONT OF THE BBs. You're teaching them to over come their problems with violence instead of logic.
The second scenario,
I want you to imagine how the community is affected when you kill someone just because you don't agree with their morality. Does someone's morally corrupt mentality always prevent them from being an asset?
Benjamin Franklin was definitely by modern day's standard a crappy person. This is a man who owned slaves and allowed the sale of human beings at his store. Morally wrong. Could you imagine history without him though? His work, along with others, to harness electricity pioneered our journey into electricity. This a man who profited off of the sale of humans. Was he a shitty person? Yes. Even if he spoke out later in life against slavery it doesn't rescind his action. Ignorant when it came to compassion and empathy but not when it came to science. Was he not an asset in some way regardless of his ignorance?
I will close my long winded rant with this. You shouldn't go around killing everyone you don't agree with. I certainly hope you do not take this approach in real life. Further more as a "leader' in game this is clearly griefy and an abuse of power. If you are going to play judge please also play jury and heavily weigh the person's actions as well as your own.
Can't we all just be kind and live long?
