I'd love it if we end up with a game where any biome is livable with the right tools and equipment. Ice biome with igloos and super warm clothing from seals, maybe add ice bears. Grassland with wooden huts, desert with tents and linen clothing etc.

But I think this would be outside of the scope of Jason's game plan to be honest, but who knows?

As it is I would be happy if we could just move away from the eternally same farming setups. Towns do not need to be centered around giant berry farms and it's such a massive sink of effort and resources.

I've tried going different ways in my eve camps like heavy foraging and fast popcorn, but people just won't eat it and they will not farm it. If I tell people to make a berry farm, they make 100 bushes. If I don't tell them what to farm they still make 50. If I tell them explicitly not to farm berries, they will still make about 30 bushes lol.
And later, when we got stew and pies they will also not eat it. Yesterday we put four pots of stew next to the berry farm.... the four pots never were used up but the berries sure were emptied and fixed and eaten again several times, using a ton of compost in the process.

I don't know how but this meta gotta change.

#29 Re: Main Forum » Total newbies should not play in Eve camps » 2019-02-08 06:52:23

I see myself as Eve, the creator of the camp and I feel responsible for setting things up so that the future generations can actually survive. Long term survival is my main goal. I have a set of tasks and I need to do them in a limited time and if I don't, the camp most likely dies out.
You're suggesting that I take time out of these tasks and devote them to teaching people. I could do that. But it would mean that absolutely essential stuff doesn't get done.
I can see that there's a trade off where teaching increases productivity and I'm ok with trying to go for a bit more teaching. I'm just not willing to do it at the cost of the camp's future.

I guess this made me realize that I am not building my camps for newbies to live in. I build them for people that at least know how to survive. Maybe newbie isn't even the right word. I mean unwilling-to-learn-people. Because a newbie that is willing to learn can stop being a newbie within a day or two. A person unwilling to learn never advances from the newbie state, basically. And those are the kind of people I don't want to waste my time on and I don't think that's gonna change.

#30 Re: Main Forum » Total newbies should not play in Eve camps » 2019-02-07 16:01:05

You said it yourself, a new player should have done the tutorial and spent time in bigger towns and learned the basics. But they didn't put in the effort... so I don't think it's fair to ask me to put in the effort for them.

If a newbie wants to Eve I can just suicide right out of there and go somewhere else, if newbies spawn into my camp it literally drags down the camp.

I was new once too but I did a bunch of reading and learning from the beginning and I think I started becoming at least self-sufficient within a few days, really. I didn't just rely on other people to explain it all to me and I think expecting other players to do all the teaching so you can skip out on the learning is incredibly lazy.

So this is a thing that's been bothering me for a while: completely inexperienced players in eve camps or even trying to Eve themselves. It just doesn't make any sense to me. Why pick the hardest, least forgiving way of playing when you haven't yet learned the ropes?

It's not an accident either, on a stable server you hardly just spawn into eve camps. You basically need to get lineage banned from all the towns first (where you should actually be playing and learning as a newbie) to spawn there, so why do they do it?

They ruin many of my starts and they are simultaneously unproductive and rude when called out on it. It just baffles me.

It's an eve camp, if you cannot contribute then why are you here, in the wilderness, trying to survive? Spawn in a town, please. Learn about the game a bit. I do not have time to teach you for twenty minutes, nor do I have the resources to fix all the things you are breaking. You really don't need to be the best player out there, I certainly am not, but please at least be able to pull your own weight!

"being sent with FOOD and IRON"

"only minimally different"

Yeah no.

#34 Re: Main Forum » Permanent Civilization » 2019-02-07 05:46:02

I see where you're coming from but your goal is not my goal. Eve-ing is the most enjoyable thing in this game for me (and enough others) and we will not make it a thing of the past just because you want it to be.

#35 Re: Main Forum » Are all these babies really needed? » 2019-02-06 13:30:16

I'm a terrible mother in big towns. I would be okay with raising a reasonable amount of babies that are able to follow basic instructions ("stay on warm tile, baby!"). But in my experience that's just not possible. I cannot abandon any children without some random person adopting them within moments and then feeding them with the most inefficient food. Young girls especially like to do that for some reason. In fact they usually like to do that with my non-abandoned children too. I am not a dirty berry muncher, I like to put my kid on a good temp spot and then go work and periodically check on the kid. That is  just not possible. I regularly see that after just 15-20 seconds someone will have grabbed my child, fed it some crap and/or brought it over to the berries.
So at some point I basically stopped caring for most of my kids. Because it really doesn't matter if I try to feed them, if I try to put them on good spot or whatever. Some other person will choose to come along and be the surrogate mother and waste way more food and time on them then it would have taken me. So why should I bother exactly? If I try to care for them it will literally just lead to more overfeeding.
If there's a snowpile near town I usually just take excess kids there and snowball them when nobody looks. Any less discreet way is bound to create incredible drama because people get so, so upset if you try to kill babies. They will curse you or kill you or at the very least start a several minute discussion which ends up wasting more time/resources than it would have cost to just raise the damn kid.

Sometimes I see these people running around complaining about mothers not taking care of their kids. "I've raised like 10 babies cause you idiots couldn't take care of them". I wish they would understand that maybe, just maybe, some mothers made an informed choice that this and that particular child wasn't worth raising and everything would be fine if you had just let them make those decisions over their own damn offspring.

So yeah... people are too generous towards babies indeed.

#36 Re: Main Forum » Do you enjoy killing people? » 2019-02-06 10:09:48

I agree with you and I am just trying to name the situation as is so that Jason can be made aware of it and be given the opportunity to change things. I don't think he will and if that ruins the game that is indeed on him, not you or other griefers. That's the main point here for me.

I don't want to become one of you cause I sincerely don't enjoy causing other people discomfort, it's a disgusting feeling, I hate it. The thing that gives you joy makes me feel bad, so no thank you.

#37 Re: Main Forum » Do you enjoy killing people? » 2019-02-06 09:51:09

Lu....so what you are saying is that you and other griefers messed up the player experience so hard that a well meaning player like me cannot enjoy the official servers anymore and need to move to private servers instead. That's pretty fucking sad you know.

#38 Re: Main Forum » Do you enjoy killing people? » 2019-02-06 08:39:29

Actually a few days ago my eve camp got trolled into extinction very subtly over an extended period of time by someone just 'misplacing' bowls and tools over and over and other stuff and it was the worst thing ever. Almost an hour looking to find the perfect spot, then a whole hour spent running back and forth and getting absolutely nothing done because that person was always a step ahead of me. I didn't know for sure what was happening, just that someone had to be screwing with me. When I finally gave up and said I'm gonna die that person came up and said "oh btw I was the troll that fucked your camp". It was so disheartening, realizing that I and everyone else had just collectively wasted hours of game time failing just so this person could be entertained.
So yes, this feeling of people lurking in the shadows is kinda of a real thing to me now and your post just confirmed it.

And I don't wanna prove or disprove to griefers that my will cannot be broken. That is literally not part of the game I play and if that's what this game ends up being about then I'm out.

#39 Re: Main Forum » Do you enjoy killing people? » 2019-02-06 07:22:33

Here's the thing: he enjoys playing this game and he enjoys playing it this way and there is really nothing preventing him from doing so unless Jason changes.....something. Telling him that there are different options which would be more enjoyable for us is pretty meaningless, isn't it? There is nothing forcing him to change so from his perspective he simply doesn't need to.

I gotta be honest, this thread is the most disheartening thing I've seen since I started playing OHOL and I've seen a lot of crap in game and out. Knowing that people like this exist and knowing that we are all now on one server and there is no way of escaping them... it doesn't make me angry or even sad. It's just this numbing feeling of my effort seeming pointless, a sort of apathy creeping over me.
Makes me wonder, do I really want to keep playing, should I really try my hardest if this is what I'm up against? I'd much prefer just getting pointlessly stabbed every other life to this.

Alas, the only one who can change this is Jason. He created this playground and he makes the rules (or lack thereof) we play by. I wish I could share his approach of expecting people to be mature enough to solve issues among themselves but I really don't see it working in the state that the game is in now, sadly.

#40 Re: Main Forum » Good job, Davey Victoria... » 2019-02-05 11:13:26

FYI you can curse someone for like two hours which means you can still curse this person in a later life when you can type it out as long as you remember the name. I know, still frustrating but it's better than nothing.

#41 Re: Main Forum » What do babies want from me? » 2019-02-04 07:20:14

You're never better off listening to somebody that just "likes to eat". Kinda missed the point there....

#42 Re: Main Forum » Hey korean player! r u there? » 2019-02-03 14:05:27

안녕하세요! 네푸묵입니다.

I have played with some Koreans on server 15 before, it was a lot of fun. Nice to see you guys have your own place on Naver. Wish my Korean was better so I could actually interact there. I would love to see some more interaction between communities!

#43 Re: Main Forum » What do babies want from me? » 2019-02-02 06:20:27

Different people like to play in different civs. Many like late civs, I like early civs, some only like playing Eve etc. These people will always suicide when they don't get the (type of) civ they want.

For me when I do find a civ that fits (so for me super early civ) I check a whole number of factors and then decide whether to stay - does Eve have a last name? Does she know what she's doing? Does the camp have water, heat, grassland etc? Are people nice enough or are they all pricks? Are we managing our recources well? Basically, does this place have a future? You can usually see these things at a quick glance.

I tend to go down a checklist and only stay if most my requirements are fulfilled. That might sound selfish but it only makes sure that I play in a place that I actually want to play in and where I am willing to give my everything to the cause.  Nobody is forced to stay anywhere and /die is not a dick move. Expecting players to stay in a place they don't actually enjoy playing in is the bigger dick move imo.

#44 Re: Main Forum » Question About Awbz (Mod) » 2019-02-02 06:07:06

Not an expert on this but basically the dev of AWBZ mod would have to spend several hundred dollars to get the certificate that makes that warning go away and since this is not a commercial product he is not gonna do that. It's safe to download.

#45 Re: Main Forum » Tutorial area breakout? » 2019-01-30 09:09:54

It's a fun challenge and it makes me uncomfortably aware of how much faster my smithing could be smile

#46 Re: Main Forum » More tutorials? » 2019-01-30 07:52:24

I agree that the game could use more tutorials covering numerous topics, it surely would lessen some of the burden of teaching from the more experienced players and give the new players more tools to learn at their own pace.

Glad you found a solution for our Russian comrades in farms

#48 Re: Main Forum » Serious problems on bigserver1, server 1 » 2019-01-28 12:59:41

Playing on bigserver is kinda pointless right now with items constantly disappearing and what not....

#49 Re: Main Forum » Speed family trying to trigger apocalypse. Also servers are screwy aga » 2019-01-28 09:55:19

Damn, this is not what I had in mind when I started these civs lol

#50 Re: Main Forum » Roleplay smiths and roleplay doctors? » 2019-01-24 10:16:24

I think he wouldn't have written half an essay if the issue wasn't dear to him so don't be too quick to dismiss it. People really do these things. Roleplay or not, a lot of (not just) new players opt to put themselves in a very narrow role in terms of what tasks they will and will not do and more often than not it is quite detrimental to the town's productivity and forces everyone else to pick up the slack which is understandably frustrating for the people that actually put in the work.
