I mean these are the basics I've retained from playing previous to the updates. I'm a decently capable player, and can definitely do more than this as an Eve to get my kids started in a good direction.

Someone posted recently that instead of mega-sized berry farms, an Eve we should strive to start several smaller berry patches around camp. This may or may not be a good idea, but that aside I'm looking for these kinds of tips.

For instance, should I strive to start a farm with varied crops? Which ones? Which order is most efficient?

How early is too early to start a sheep pen? Some players, such as pein, think this is essential. Others disagree.

I'm not daunted by the task. I've gotten to forged tools as an Eve a few times. However, I really enjoy exploring and experimenting with other players' strategies.

I haven't had the opportunity to play much during the last three updates. IRL, I'm busy working myself into a new role in the company I work for.

I've been lucky in that the last few times I have played, I am generally born to a larger town. This gives me the opportunity to learn about the new items, recipes, and tech in a less stressful environment.

It got me thinking that I am ill-prepared to take on an Eve role as compared to how comfortable I felt with it a month ago. I could certainly get a small camp going and feed my children, but I'm no longer at the point where I feel I could set up the camp for long term success.

Everything you do as Eve is almost doubly important because you are laying the foundational structure for the village that may eventually grow into.

This leads me to my question. Has anyone written an updated Eve guide? I haven't seen anything nearly current enough here in the forums, only bits and pieces of information I can string together as best as possible.

There have been some great Eve guides in the past. I'd be eternally grateful for an updated one that was focused on long-term sustainability.

I've been wondering about that for a while now. Sheep seem to be at the top of the livestock hierarchy.

Will we ever get cattle?

Meat, milk, leather, cow dung (great for compost!), horns.

Cattle could really be the multi-tasking livestock we are also craving....

Also, I want a burger...

Still can a bear cross a filled hole?

In my mind I was thinking that you would stack the stones outside of the cave (same tile). When you reached the max number of stones, the cave would update to appear blocked or caved in. Bears would not be able to exit the cave.

I think it's important that we be able to reverse a blocked in bear cave, as we do need bear hides for certain things. I think you should be able to dig the cave out with a pickaxe or shovel. Nothing should ever be permanent in the game. Maybe the cave-in would decay similar to other objects?

What about a similar mechanic to well-building? Stack stones in front of it? Reach the required amount and the bear cave is sealed. Maybe this could be undone with a mining pickaxe.

You run the risk of accidentally poking the bear cave while building the wall, but we'll just call that a feature and say it balances the game, heh!

Buwahahaha! So true! (IRL) Used to go camping high up in the mountains past Yosemite with some buddies. One was a retired Corpsman and he brought along all types of emergency medical supplies.

He brought some cauterizing powder (for deep flesh wounds, fast blood loss) in case of a bear attack or something. He was a little too excited to explain the gory details of how it worked, and I think he was just itching for an excuse to use it.

To get a baseline idea of the difficulty of implementing your suggestion:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voder

Not only would this potentially be a nightmare for Jason, it would be incredibly challenging for players to learn and integrate this skill, especially within our short hour-long lives, which are currently over-burdened with menial tasks.

#38 Re: Main Forum » Best One-sentence description of OHOL? » 2018-06-16 17:15:53

Jason,

I've always liked your description of the game as being a "10,000 foot view" of humanity and civilization. I try to work that phrase in when I describe it to friends. This game is very much a minimalist simulation of social relationships.

I think it's important to work in the anonymity of the game as well. I think many new players would expect to play with friends, which is not what the game is about. Additionally, anonymity affects gameplay in a huge way because you never know exactly who you are playing with.

#41 Re: Main Forum » Fruiting trees ? » 2018-06-14 18:41:32

Absolutely! The lack of fruiting trees has puzzled me.

I suppose that berry bushes fulfill this role by being multi-generational food sources with multiple uses.

Different fruiting trees in different biomes. Would be great. Apples in the greenlands, figs in savannah, maybe mangos in the swamp. It would be great to have these options for pies, of course!

Maybe, as a nerf, when planted, they take one or two generations to grow? Wild trees produce much less than domesticated trees. Maybe the domesticated trees need to be watered every generation or so?

I assume nut trees will come down the road at some point, perhaps olives as well. As Jason grows the tech tree we are inevitably going to need sources of natural or edible oils. If I'm understanding his vision of the food system, you might need oil for cooking as well.

Rubber/natural latex also comes from trees.

#42 Re: Main Forum » More murder problem discussion » 2018-06-13 21:20:15

The problems I find prevail with how towns deal with griefers:

1) Complete inaction, based on a lack of communication. Someone tries to alert the townsfolk, but no one pays attention.

2) The townsfolk listen, but do not care or believe that "accuser". It turns into a whole "I saw Goody Proctor with the Devil" situation.

3) The griefer/murderer has a follower/supporter on the inside who uses the distraction to cause more destruction.

pein, seriously, look at the words you wrote which I highlighted in bold for clarity.

You are so quick to put others down while demanding respect for yourself.

You are quick to claim that you deserve something for your "hard work".

You complain about how others play, ruin your projects/plans/game, but turn around and do things that are equally obnoxious and frustrating for other people. Therefore, your entire point, about people being respectful or efficient or useful in game, loses its credibility.

There will always be bad players, new players, and inattentive players. And even experienced players have rough games. I think the best thing to do is treat others with kindness, patience, and compassion. Those games are often my best lives!

I'm starting to notice at least a small correlation in that players who are often complaining about the way other players game seem to also be players who are most concerned with "efficiency". I also seem to notice that those same players are always whining about someone else ruining their "grand" plans or projects. They often play in an isolated style, rarely asking others for help and assistance.

I wish I could feel sorry for you pein, I really do, but I can't. You annoy the shit out of people> And (fair or not) people are much less likely to feel sorry for you if they don't really like you personally.

i dont fucking care about your pity

i dont complain about people to help me, i complain about they  doing stupid stuff, unoptimized and bad intentions
making harder to themselves, and for others

say all you want i am right, and dont take out of context you moron , it was an answer, and yes, you get higher civ level cause of me lot of times

i  can annoy them , i am right they not, if you care about how it looks not how it works, you get a lot of errors, like fences so easy to be griefed accidentally even, grave pens are new meta, as it adds storage i ntop of indestructibility, and it looks cool

1. I surely do not hold any pity for you in my heart, that much you can be sure of.

2. Real life must be a total bitch for you, because there will always be stupid people, inefficient people, and people with bad intentions. You let those idiots control you though, because you have allowed them to get into your head and taint your perception of honest, good, hard-working people.

3. Claiming you are right does not make it true, though I'm not sure where I said you were "wrong" about anything other than your petulant, megalomaniacal, self-pitying attitude.

4. We get high level civs because of you? Just you? You really want to take credit for towns that have existed for generations? This is my MAIN issue with you. You take credit where it is not due. You exhibit a savior complex. You are NOT solely responsible. That is absurd, narcissistic, and demonstrably false.

5. Not everything is a matter of "right vs. wrong". Life is not black-and-white. I know that's a cliché, but as I've entered my thirties (in real life), I see the truth behind these words more and more. There are just some areas where a clear moral right/wrong does not exist.

YOU are not the supreme judge of what is moral, or right, or wrong. That is collective, my friend.

and pein, seriously, I don't even give a flying fuck about the graveyard sheep pen stuff. I really don't. In fact, I commend you for using a game mechanic to your advantage.

Again, my issue with you is your attitude and disruptive nature in-game and in the forums.
