This shouldn't always be the case though.
We drive cars because they are better than horses, not because we ran out of horses.
If anything, we had too much horse poop:
The Great Horse Manure Crisis of 1894
It would be nice to be able to have some last words before you die in general.
Like if you step on a snake or get attacked by animals you should be able to let people know the furs you hunted are south.
Maybe with different colors around the text too... green for poison, yellow for animal attack...
Congrats!
Long Live the Pie-ome!
Improve New Player Experience
IDEA: rope + baby = leashed baby
So baby can't get lost/suicide.
Have it stop working once they are a child.
IDEA: basket + rope = back basket
IDEA: rope + thread = Mei Tai (baby carrier)
Wear one on your front! ... wear one your back! ...and one on a leash!
The important part is that it's a living city, with live people in it so the new player can learn how to play from watching others.
Give them a good first experience before the more challenging: Abandoned, Abandoned, Starved, Abandoned, Alone...
Improving New Player Experience
IDEA: How about have new players spawn as Eves in living cities? It would be a great way to get more than one family line going in the same place, while also reducing the risk of starvation and giving them time to see the game in action. Perhaps have this "Spawn In Eden" effect only last until they have eaten 100 carrots or something that shows they participated long enough to learn a few things.
Does your version stand alone like 2HOL, or does it need to be installed & uninstalled for every use?
Download link please?
Thanks!
I think the "no relation" thing is a bug. I know I've been born into a village and had someone very confused that I was showing as "no relation" to them, even though to me they showed as my Aunt.
Hey, isn't it possible to detect if someone was a murderer in life, instead of if they were murdered?
The problem is how does the server know if the person "had it coming" or not? If the person murdered was griefing the town by disrupting crops and hiding valuables then perhaps the murder was warranted. Or how does a town defend itself if they too are then forced to murder the murderer? Dancing on graves doesn't help - if the griefer is successful in killing everyone in town he can dance on everyone's graves. This game has a lot of graves, and people love dancing...
When rung, the bell tower sets itself as the home marker for all people on the server who don't have a home marker set. Great for summoning people to your town if you're out of women.
EDIT: How to build a Bell Tower:

I have seen the random people statues bug in 2HOL, but not OHOL. They have names and change into different people if you leave and come back later.
Don't you find it more of a waste of time to be born into a situation that you don't want to play in? I find it somewhere between boring and frustrating to be abandoned or have to suicide over and over. Being the child to a noob Eve who has no clue what they are doing is torture.
Someone should try to hook zooming into the mouse wheel.
That would be wonderful as part of the official game.
That 45 second view screen could also have some basic gameplay instructions so that new players aren't quite so confused when starting out. Since the game updates so often it would be nice to have a notice about what's new - that would keep it from being boring for veteran players.
I'm not sure where this idea started but it's a good one.
(9 months is 3/4 of a year = 45 seconds is 3/4 of a minute)
A 45 second pregnancy where the Eve is noticeably pregnant, and has those 45 seconds to decide if she wants to have that baby with the option to abort/miscarry without penalty. At the same time the unborn player has those 45 seconds to view the perspective of the Eve and decide if they want to be born into that life, also with the option to abort/miscarry without penalty.
This should help alleviate the baby suicide and abandonment issue.
I *LOVE* this whole server karma ladder idea!
Looking forward to server 8, with seven levels above, and seven levels below...
Results so far of Mistery Mom update/test on 2HOL:
-Dads are pretty good moms...
Is it possible to change the titles to Dad, Grandfather, Brother, Uncle, etc.?
-Eve spawning is almost completely impossible with so many eligible parents...
-City spawns are increased. You are more likely to be born into a thriving society than a random Eve in the wilderness.
Random Adam spawning?
-A single family line took over the entire server at one point (3rd cousin 18 times removed etc).
-That family has since died and nobody has last names now.
and add the ability to name yourself if you have no name? (Default first name Adam for those missing both names.)
-Some people have said this hurts RP. I'm not sure what that means, but I think they meant immersion.
-Some people have said this makes being a man annoying because you can't do projects (welcome to the pain of womanhood)
Welcome to the joys of parenthood!
- No male breastfeeding though, make them feed babies manually.

Actually the birth ratio is 2.5/1 in favour of females. A bit over twice as many
That's without the increase in developed nations because of the hormone change some plastics cause.I liked bio at uni.
Dust wrote:It would be nice if the first time you find rabbit holes, they start as families and not single.
Since out in the wild, that would even make more sense, that they are not hunted down yet.
Right now i'm forced to trigger/walk all over the plains to get the rabbit holes to start making babies, forcing me then to wait 10min until i can start hunting without the fear of rotting out the population.
Inpatient hunters will ignore this and badly hurt your colonie.Amen, same with Cactus please, just give Cactus a chance to spawn in any of its cycles same how you do for Milkweeds.
THIS. 100%. Random start spawn makes the most sense.
Sounds a lot like:
Introducing cursing, religion, magic as a feature in the game would be weird.
We're not always going to be stuck at prehistoric levels of society, and the way the evolution of this game seems to be going, we're going to get robots, new tech, etc. Jason is building a world where occultism definitely won't fit in.
Agreed.
How does this help if the griefer is from your own lineage?
They could take out the whole town and have the added chuckle that everyone is banned from their own village.
Genetics. Males are the focus of improvement, be it nature (he was born physically/mentally better than his peers) or nurture (he worked harder to be more successful than his peers). Women stay safer at home (by the fire tending babies and carrots) - but more realistically she would choose the best male to pass stats on to her children.
If the game had inheritance you would see much more realistic emergence from the game. Stats you could see when mouse-hovering over another player like speed, strength (+/- number of item carry), metabolism (+/- hunger rate) and an economic advantage, say a baby is born with a copy of whatever clothes his father was wearing. Guaranteed having successful males around would suddenly matter when considering which baby to keep.
I also like the idea of the 45 second pregnancy view so that Eve and unborn baby can both decide if this is a match they want.
Press A for abort.
Eves should spawn as children so they have a chance to find a home and set up camp before becoming fertile.
and/or
Eves should be born with a fig leaf chastity belt that decays after a few minutes, but gives them a chance to set up camp before babies appear. Fig trees should supply leaves you can pick and replace as contraceptives later. Maybe make fig fruits increase fertility for those who want that option too.
"The role of males in the game" or "So how can we increase the cost of birth?"
Which is this thread about?
