You are 100% correct, the biggest killer in civs today isn't griefers (although majority of people in the forum will disagree). It's overpopulation, one fertile female on average spits out 7 kids, and way to many mothers keep 100% of their kids. See it all the time, an eve who hasn't even begun getting even the tools crafted to make a fire (stone axe, fire bow drill etc.) has 4 children running around eating everything in sight. When I'm born I have a quick look at the current situation of my family and if I think myself being alive is going to over populate, I go snake hugging.

Actually I think it's very good situation to be born into.  Especially as as girl.  What I do is grab a basket with carrot as soon as I can and run off 1 or 2 biomes away.  I chill out near berry bushes for couple of minutes and then go back.  Overpopulation problem is already solved via natural means.  And few people that are still alive are all experienced players.  You can have super cool game from then on.  Sometimes you even take smithing lessons in Eve's camp!

Once in a while I have even one or two more people chilling out around the same bushes.  So you can have a chat and it's not boring while you wait for overpopulation problem to solve itself.

I thought like this but actually I had best runs with the kid that spawns right at start together with me.  If you pick them off, name yourself, name them, and immediately start temp running, you are signalling to them that you know what you doing.  If they stay put in your arms for few minutes and don't talk anything until they think spot is good, you know you're gonna be smithing in this lifetime. Once you found the right place, they are old enough to grab a basket and start doing something usefull immediatelly.

There are like 50 people playing:
http://onehouronelife.com/reflector/ser … ion=report

All the towns got wiped out with the decay+milkweed nerfs and finished off by the griefers.  Most people suicide as Eve or Eve's child. So they get born to remaining overpopulated villages.

This is very peacefull place BTW.  Mass murders usually started around 3rd generation:
http://lineage.onehouronelife.com/serve … _id=176733

But this improved significantly, and if you are lucky, you get slaughtered by your second kid, once she is old enough to hold a knife:
http://lineage.onehouronelife.com/serve … _id=195516

I got spawned today as a baby there again. I was curious what really happens, so instead of working my ass off as I usually do, I just run around the place and looked.  And there are 2-3 players forging knifes. And there is room with a door and lock and bunch of closed boxes there where they store knifes, bows, arrows, pies, woolen clothes, etc.  So they can easily go on killing spree whenever they spawn there again. It's like going on safari.

So if you do anything constructive there, you basically just populating slaughterhouse for them.

And that's why we have like 65 people playing out of 14000 that bought the game.

Remember: if you are not killing in this game, you are just a wild game. It's PvP TPS in disguise. The real men let you breed for few generations, and then they come with the guns and wipe your family off.

i like the limits on it, but it should be balanced with spawn rates, if we calculate with carrots, around 100 per person, it needs 20 water a lifetime, for 20 tiles and 3 seed rows 3x7 based on 5 carrot seeding, thats 23 water per person which is kinda 1 pond more or less, sheep dung is serious limitation for calculating with pies, and still a lot of waste product because player skill and grain usage

So what does it mean in practice?  That the largest towns will be able to sustain 10-15 people.  And a newb or two eating carrots and doing nothing else will collapse the whole civilization?

Well, I'm not talking about how long they last.  I'm talking that they suddenly destroy items you put in them.

I think backpacks are still worth it though. A backpack is probably worth it no matter how expensive it is to make.

I really like the way they decay now.  Your grandma gives you precious backpack. Then after two minutes "pufff" and half of your items are gone.  Then after a short while another "pufff" and all your items are gone.  A really convenient way of getting rid of important stuff.  Is is a bug or a feature?

Isn't that a bug though?  Game preloads lots of stuff when you launch it, and then, after you are born, you still don't see anything for like 5-10 seconds.  Happens only on first run - later everything is already in cache.

You can still farm milkweed, it is just crazy expensive. Four soil to make a rope is nuts.

Can you really afford that though?  You need to combat decay all the time.  Backpack is luxury item already.  Haven't seen full set of clothes in long time.

We're already down from 68 generations last week to 18 today:

Do we really need more nerfs?  Decay+milkweed already killed every single town.

I've spawned into something like this 3 times (2 as Eve, 1 as child of Eve).  Quite fun trying to restore it to former glory.  Just run around and gather all knifes.  If not, mass murder starts as soon as second or third gen can hold a knife in hand.

That's a joke, right?  Since recent nerfs (decay+milkweed) that's very rare image. I can have backpack or two as Eve. In towns it takes half a lifetime to make one.

If you let a baby die, that player can't respawn into the family again for like 3 hours or something. So it probably isn't wise to let everyone die in mass, as you may run out players who can spawn in the family. That is why it is better to have a male, than a female who just lets all her children die.

Oh, this problem has been already solved with recent nerfs.  There are no viable towns anymore in the game. Or am I just unlucky? Just looking at the stats for all players:

Recent Elder Deaths:
Eve Hood    60 years old    Generation: 1    Died 65 seconds ago
Eve Yom    60 years old    Generation: 1    Died 2 minutes ago
Eve Lovecchio    60 years old    Generation: 1    Died 4 minutes ago

Kden    16 years old    Generation: 17    Died 21 hours ago

Hmm, all from the same family, wiped out by a griefer:

Askari

Final words: "Im not stabing you"

Jeanette

Oh my god.  You seriously asking for another nerf here?  While I agree that this is not realistic, it's currently the only way I succeed to set up a settlement as Eve.  If this gets nerfed I basically will have to suicide every single time I'm not spawned in the perfect spot.

Well, I repeat.  I never proposed automatic behaviour.  As to the people not being right all the time?  True.  But IRL, even if we cannot catch and sentence every murderer or thief, and sometimes someone innocent is punished, we sill have law and courts and jails.  To deter others from doing that.

i do not know one single game where the killers are being favoured while the victims are being misled into the belief that the game is not about killing

Considering OHOL is meant to be analogous to real life (with artistic interpretation), why don't we see how murder is dealt with in real life:
1. Protection from murder? A robust legal system discouraging it and the ability to arm yourself for self defense
2. Prevention against murder? Its called properly raising your kids to know murdering is bad, or if they still think it is good then medicate them heavily and lock them away (Asylums existed for a reason). Also a legal system that waves consequences in your face.

[...]

Well, IRL you do not respawn.  So if you killed or caught murderer, that's it, you've dealt with the problem.  Current, most severe punishment in OHOL is being teleported to another town, with carte blanche, to do the same. Oh, and if you fucked up, and didn't manage to eradicate the whole lineage, you cannot teleport back to original town to finish it off for 3 hours. But your friend on Discord can...

I immensly enjoy games where the whole purpose is killing you opponents.  But those games have good balance.  If there were proper ways to deal with the griefers in game I wouldn't have any problem with them beeing around.  Complaining about them would be like complaining about rushes in Starcraft.  If you got rushed you just playing it wrong.  Scout, see what is coming, prepare, easily fend off and if the rusher doesn't quit a this point you, with all the advantage in economy, easily kill him in next 2 minutes. Easy win.

In OHOL: griefer is born into your settlement as your child, eats your food, uses you resources to make a bow, lures in a bear, and shoots fleeing people in the back. Any viable defense startegy for that?  It's early settlement.  If I start making bows and arrows for self defence instead of other usefull tools, I most likely starve before griefer shows up.

#697 Re: Main Forum » Check if these numbers make sense » 2018-05-30 22:53:04

This change will also make it necessary to build farm on the swamps.  So you will have naked ppl running in the cold.  They will run through the food four times faster, which is deadly, especially for kids.

If you place farm in more optimal place kids won't be able to help you either - most will starve out running long distance to the wells, as it frequently happens in Eve settlements.

You don't need to keep them all, you have that option. But I agree that it feels bad.  And I usually bring back kid with me, even if born far away from city.

As a boy, if village runs out of fertile women., whatever you do is completely pointless.

Last time I ran an analysis (two months ago, when griefing was at its peak and murder was easy to do without getting caught), about 1% of lives ended in murder.

Not sure what the rate is today.

With this kind of statistics you are seriously underestimating the impact of griefing.  Just one example (don't have a link - can I search somehow for lineages from few days ago?).  In lineage it looks like only two or three people were killed by griefer.  What's the deal, right?  How about others killed by grizzly bear?  It was lured in by the griefer before he started killing himself.  How about those that starved while running from armed greifer?  Those also are his victims.  Kid starved after his mother was killed?  Griefer victim.

I fully agree that people grief sporadically. The problem is that with current game balance griefing is immensly powerfull.  So it's not like you are griefing and then one other person had bad experience.  It's more like one griefer = twenty unhappy people.  One or two greifers on the server and it looks like greifing is everywhere.
