I know i've brought this up before, but i'm ceaselessly amazed at the abundance of the wilds near civs that have been there for 10 or 20 generations. Often one can walk for just a couple or few minutes and see new spawn.

it is dangerous in the wilds, and kind of repetitive, but there's also a great deal of material abundance.

Granted, the wilds are rarely truly needed once a civ is developed, and skewers to make home markers become scarce. Still, i remain incredulous at how close unlookedupon land is, especially with the social pressure about iron consumption.

I don't know that i've seen a civilization which truly had too many baskets, though since they decay and tule doesn't regrow, One should be mindful of just wasting them. But in my experience one can do quite a lot for a city making baskets and returning with them full of this or that, yet it seems to be quite an unpopular activity, besides at brand new camps.

Also, I'm still on this permanent civilization thing, so i'm often trying to start new camps, though with how the lineage ban functions, i'm beginning to feel guilty that when kids see me in the wilds starting a new camp and /die they are then not going back to the city either, but tons of babies /die on me in the city as well.

Anyway, so the real question: How much do you go into the wilds, and for which reasons?

I heard that people were using multiple lineages in the same city as a way to keep working on their projects life after life.  This is not good.  That is not the point of the game. The point of the game is passing on what you worked on when you die!  That is pretty much the only point of this game.

I appreciate your vision, as to the point of this game, however, if that is your concern, why in the world did you implement airplanes that transport you to another civ? Especially as unless i'm mistaken, lineage ban is still in effect. So this means, if someone gets in a plane and moves to a new civ, their kids will be banned from both lines, in perpetuity if they stay in that village.

Also, just for an idea of how bad this has gotten. The other day- and I should have screencapped it- lineage server showed THREE Eves who died at 60 at the same second (and, another about a minute behind them). Granted, something could have been screwy, being tested, etc and that's still highly improbable, three people logging in at the same time and being made Eve and living to 60. I didn't check back to see how things looked when their kids died, but what chance did those camps have, if anyone who lived to 30 or /died was banned from all three of them, competing for kids at the exact same time?

Maybe one solution is not only a smaller area ban distance, but lineage ban DOESNT apply if you are a certain distance away. For example, lineage ban doesn't apply to family members over 1000 tiles from your birth location [death location would seem more logical, except then people would just ride a horse 1000 tiles away before death or whatever]. a small number of people have figured out mapping etc, but the great majority of players are unlikely to ever find a civ 1000 tiles from them. I go on iron expeditions all the time and rarely find anyone (though it definitely happens) When I do find people, they're always unaware of my civ's existence.

#103 Re: Main Forum » Open later: Top cap for yum » 2019-03-09 18:11:54

i think the number of people going a long distance for yum chains is quite limited. And 10 isn't that high of a chain in a town that has stew, bread, saurkraut, milk, pies, etc.

i've had yum chains last half a lifetime putting quite little effort into it besides just choosing the order of my food, especially as in a developed town there's 5-10 good options just sitting around.

I'd be annoyed by capping it, as getting a 10 yum chain isn't even that massive. I don't see many people doing obviously stupid/wasteful things for the purpose of yum chaining. Though i don't use zoom mod, so what other players are doing is not that obvious to me.

I was realizing that watching the time lapse, that most of the people so annoyed by other players habits are probably using the zoom mod and can see more of what players are doing. There just isn't that much food scarcity in this game if people actually bother to make food. Even the berry eaters I think are only a problem because most of them aren't even taking care of the fields. [it is really inefficient, but a person who is actually making some compost and firing up the pumps etc could easily create a relatively large food surplus of berries in a lifetime with a tiny use of non-renewable resources. ]

I do majorly want to see food variety increased, so i suppose at a certain point it would get ridiculous, and take food challenges entirely out of the game. But I very much like the concept of there never being an ultimate food, even though that does remain mutton pies, even with the shorn sheep now producing dung. [maybe only shorn sheep should produce dung though, that seems way more balanced...because I don't think lambs producing dung was turned off, i didn't see it in the changes, but i don't know that i've been anywhere with a dung shortage since the change.]

#104 Re: Main Forum » The Shovel needs a break - Time for Pitchfork » 2019-03-09 17:20:23

I've had this thought, as i'm an avid composter, and I move manure with a pitchfork, as well as mixing the compost with one.

As far as making things more like real life go, you simply can't mix a compost pile well with a shovel, at least, not nearly as well as with a pitch fork.  I don't want to need to use an iron tool to move bundles of wheat, but it is what a person would use IRL. i don't know if there's a worthwhile way to apply that.

I also use a pitchfork for moving cut rose branches a lot, though there is no need for that function in game.

Something to think about is that pitchfork heads are a bit more difficult to make, and less likely to break than shovel heads. they're made of tempered steel or something. A  cheap pitchfork is still like $40-50, whereas a cheap shovel is $15-20.

You'd want an extra step to make it,, but i guess potentially use a chisel then a file on a shovel head or something.

#105 Re: Main Forum » (Not quite) infinite iron suggestion » 2019-03-09 17:13:18

if you don't want people to tell you to get a job, don't complain to adults about your lack of allowance.

Anyway, i was thinking about this more, and a fun element the newcomen engines bring to mining would be the need to transport fire/make fire there. Really, making something that big out in the badlands away from camp is a huge challenge in general, but iron is also very important, so it's worth it.

On top of just setting up fire making equipment, i still want more uses for kerosene. There could be oil torches a person could carry, which also offered mosquito protection when travelling through the dangerous swamps to reach iron.

still though, people aren't trying that hard to find iron. I've only ever gone on a couple of iron runs where lack of overall availability was concerning, especially if I'm in a horsecart.

#106 Re: Main Forum » Is it good that rope is rare and hard to get? » 2019-03-09 17:03:24

Usually, if you're willing to leave town and go gathering it isn't that picked out even a biome over. But as Tarr said, if you run over somewhere with a bowl, it's pretty easy to make a small milkweed farm.

Besides the stone hoe and stone axe most things that use rope don't get consumed/decay, i mean untipping your horsecart does, but you're generally  in the wilds at that point. I think you get it back from most other uses, or its something permanent. Getting enough milkweed is rarely a major challenge. Though it is some work for sure.

i've definitely also been guilty of accidentally wasting it for string when there is a ball of thread around. I've just started camps so many times I'm used to it being the first thread. [also, if i bring an axe head with me to start a camp, i inevitably forget about it and make a stone hatchet anyway, just because i'm so in the habit of rushing to get fire.]

This doesn't relate to game play balance, but using milkweed as fiber was a weird decision in the first place.

#107 Re: Main Forum » JASON! You need to fix the area ban! » 2019-03-09 16:56:12

it sees there's been way too many Eves and not enough babies in camps since this went into effect. It's very frustrating.

I'm honestly not sure what perceived problem there was with the previous system. Presumably that people don't get born into the same multi-lineage city.

The other thing though is people don't travel that far. I tried to start a camp yesterday, had three boys and two girls, one of whom suicided, only girl died.

Absolutely beautiful spot, never had a food problem, amazing soil and water.

But i couldn't have been more than 250-500 tiles away from my original camp, and the rabbits etc were newly spawning. A great deal of players never go far out of town. In 12 generations in the city I was the first person to travel north, and no farther north than i would have gone on a normal iron run. 2000 tiles [which I believe is the current area ban] is ridiculously excessive. i think the premise is service equally well with fewer problems with a 500 tile max area ban.

#108 Re: Main Forum » (Not quite) infinite iron suggestion » 2019-03-09 04:32:03

firstly, ask your parents if they need work done, or mow your neighbor's lawn or something. If you're a teenager you should be looking for work, not a handout. (god, i sound old, I'm only 31, but I did all sorts of work to buy videogames growing up, and never expected my parents to buy them for me.)

Secondly, we totally should be able to build a newcomon engine over an iron vein and get more iron out of it.

#110 Re: Main Forum » Meckstroth family broken? » 2019-03-08 19:58:28

but disconnects are just starving. I also want to know what causes this, because it's somewhat common to see 60 year old deaths where it says "parent still living"

#112 Re: Main Forum » Was there an Update? » 2019-03-07 18:23:53

he's been saying there was a surprise the whole time, and it wasn't the accidental infinite carrots.

My understanding is that onetech automatically updates from gamecode, so it's not clear to me how he could add something that wouldn't show up as a new object.

I'm doing IVF right now and this is fucking me up.

Don't wait till you are 38 to have kids, young ones.

My wife just entered the third trimester with our first child- a daughter!- i'm 31 and she's 28. Though it's funny, part of me keeps thinking of life matrilineally [sp, spellcheck won't find it], because of this game. "She's a girl, she can carry on my family line!"

Anyway, who were you in that family?

I was the last woman

http://lineage.onehouronelife.com/serve … id=3709682

I was all proud of myself for getting sauerkraut going, but no one to enjoy it!

Also, good luck with the IVF, i'm rooting for you!

Edit: I should add, I had three daughter in a row /die, who were then of course lineage banned, so it's not just the fault of the temp, it's players who /die for no apparent reason.

though maybe they saw where the forge was and gave up right away lol

Infertility comes from short-run declines in player population (i.e. people logging off for the night), not long-run declines (i.e. fewer people playing this week than last week). In the long run birth rates stay the same no matter how many or few players there are. What changes is the number of towns alive at any one time.

Maybe what you're seeing is because of the temperature changes. If you're not keeping as warm as other people, you'll see a big drop in your own birth rate.

I had that problem today, and I realized too late, there was even a note on the ground about how the smith needed to be moved from being on the edge of a desert biome, so I had yum chained somewhat but I'm sure my temperature was just terrible, should have spent more time inside by the fire. It turned out my fertility mattered more than someone manning the forge.

#115 Re: Main Forum » Are We Having A Player Decline? » 2019-03-06 23:35:17

I don't know but the families have not been surviving long the last two days, both families i was a female in died out today and they were only get 10 or 11

#116 Re: Main Forum » [Idea] Anti Starve » 2019-03-06 17:41:21

i don't think there needs to be more of an indicator, i do agree, however, that it's confounding how many small children die of starvation around camp. Especially as toddlers should be doing the berry bush maintenance

The hunger bar is not really different from watching a power bar or health bar in other games. People who play videogames, in general, can be expected to already be used to paying attention to such things. I mean, yum and temperature are more complicated, but not letting the hunger bar get to zero is a very basic concept.

#117 Re: Main Forum » I recorded a stationary timelapse » 2019-03-06 17:36:53

OMG, I had an interaction yesterday I felt guilty about, and you caught it on the time lapse! I'm the one who accused the kid of stealing, and I can see from this video he was in fact delivering pies around camp (Though, unnecessary use of the horse cart)

I'm usually really peaceful and not accusatory, but would have probably stabbed him if I had a knife, I didn't believe him at all but decided if no one cared to not mess around. Then realized later he was probably telling the truth. Putting 12 pies in a horsecart and then reloading them as i was putting them back seemed so sketchy. Ironically, i think food delivery is an underrated job.

I had only looked at this briefly, then realize I was one of the moms when the woman said to have abortions.

I think in this life i got killed by a boar at 42 and barely made it back to camp, but I didn't see that happen happen to notice this.

This is the Cannon family right?

Thanks for doing this, i don't know how I didn't notice/remember when we were playing. This was actually quite useful to see, in terms of understanding how these cities function.

#118 Re: Main Forum » Squash seeds question: are there finite squash seeds in a given region » 2019-03-05 18:02:26

yeah and my memory is the leaves despawn pretty fast as well, and seeds have to be stored in a bowl, which of course then can't be put back in a basket.

I've had times where finding squash is near impossible, even in a new village, and other times where there are massive amounts. In my experience, people who harvest it know to replant it.

However, there is no real reason that volume, or age, should be a limiting factor. One winter squash produces a ton of seeds, and they remain viable a very long time.

Though, speaking of this, squash were originally grown just for seeds and the flesh was improved over time.

Now that we've had this convo, IMO bowl of squash seeds should be infinite planting like wheat and can be cooked over fire like popcorn. Especially with how hostile some people are to wasting any resources on yum, it would be nice to have a little byproduct of a more efficient food for yum bonus.

There's no real world reason for this limitation, anyone who has carved a pumpkin knows you could plant 20 pumpkins the next year and still have seeds to eat.

#120 Re: Main Forum » Seasons! for farming. » 2019-03-05 17:52:39

that's way, way too complicated. Though I wouldn't mind seeing a small amount of weather with a limited impact, like slightly changing biome temperature or potentially minerals or a prairie food appears only a short amount of time after rain. I'd say, "or the ability to collect rainwater", but thinking about it, that's obviously the premise of the ponds refilling.

Even basic weather is probably far past the point of diminishing returns for added complexity compared to potential enjoyment, especially as it would fundamentally change the game.

I'm for sure down with Roman numerals. How often do you need a number bigger than XVI in this game? That's a cart, IV full baskets, and a full backpack not carrying food, so in reality, a full load of most things is XIV or XV

I suppose tiles, but even so, you have L, C, D, M if you're looking at tile distance, though fewer people know those off the top of their heads (I just looked it)

#122 Re: Main Forum » Current state of fertility variables. » 2019-03-04 17:19:06

I didn't realize it was _that_ important, i assumed there was a base probability of having kids regardless, though one spends a limited amount of time in the extreme cold, so realistically a person is still usually at like .1

still, this gives me far more control than i realized, which is good for making my often failed new camps survive.

#123 Re: Main Forum » "if it gets taken make one" » 2019-03-04 17:15:21

i'm with destiny on the knife rule. and also, i try to give it to someone before I die. The other day I saw a boy making stew and was like "Kid, you seem responsible" and he said, "I am", and i said, "I don't think any kid making stew has bad intentions"

What is unfortunate is while the knife can do some things, if you're in the wilds you still generally need a sharp stone, so it is another thing in the pack.

Another thing I always do is start the damn fire when there aren't baked pies but are like 4 baskets of unbaked pies.

Some people are worried about kindling costs, but if there are no pies it can rapidly be a matter of life or death.

as far as replacing things that get taken, I suppose you have a good point, i often do have to take peoples sharp stones or bowls or whatever to do what i'm doing then get annoyed when the same is done to me.

I should probably start stone gathering more in general, as they do become short later in the life of a civ, but you never have to travel so far to find them. That's something i almost never do, unless i'm walking back anyway with basket space. But someone's doing it, cause wells get built [strangely i never seem to see people gathering stones, they just end up there.]

If there's no compost, of course that's one to do, though if an advanced civ is out of compost and isn't even set up to make compost i usually decide it's more stress than it's worth and run off with a bowl to start a new camp. [I mean, watering planted carrots or growing some wheat, sure, but if i'm running out to gather soil for new fields, seeds, etc i usually figure the place is a disaster where no one cares.]

#124 Re: Main Forum » New clothing vs hunger? » 2019-03-04 17:05:50

yeah I've found in general in an early village a person can easily gather 4 or 5 seal skins quickly without taking much food from camp, if they're nearby it's totally worth bopping them on the head and bringing back some insulation for the family.

I usually only make reed skirts if i'm in the wilds, if you have a basket with sharp stone and a piece of food, and see four milkweeds together, why not?

i was thinking about it and i realize i didn't think about timezones really. i'm on the westcoast, when i play in the early afternoon it does kind of suck. i didn't think about it being eastcoast people, I just figured it was people without jobs who suck lol
