As long as a sufficient amount of new people are buying the game weekly, churn rate doesn't matter. Jason said so himself.
Doesn't matter if the forum is dead. Doesn't matter that the maladjusted players organized. Doesn't matter if anyone is actually playing for that matter.
I keep watching the Steam reviews to see when the big bump of positive reviews actually drops off. I was expecting for them to already be gone but they linger, which makes me think something is fishy with valve's rating system.

this mindset is really depressing for me, when i first saw the trailer for OHOL i thought it would be a passionate project that was headed to be "the best game ever", not one that was conformed to sell enough to just make a living and call it a day.
OHOL could be so much more but i dont think its going to get very far. i think we are heading for the same fate that Castle Doctrine had and thats just sad.
I curse griefers. Killing them just gives them to another village.
Sending them to another village adds more chances of that griefer getting cursed.
That seems a win to me. (also me not having to deal with him anymore too)
Pork tacos should be an alternate way to provide yum chain around your village, not the only edible recipe from pork.
So you're complaining about these missing 4 items (which are clearly way way way future tech), but ignoring the 1000+ new things that have been added since that trailer was made? Really? And you feel somehow ripped off?
i mean, those 1000+ ítems are mostly parts or items that have only one use (say pork) or without not real practical use (say Morse radio)
Also don't get me wrong on this because it is not my intent to offend but advertising future content (say robots) on a game that is way far from it (and if I recall correctly there is no disclaimer of it in the trailer) I believe the consumer should have the right to complain or feel that they were promised something that there is not in the game (saying that it will be in the future it's not enough)
What fences still need:
- "MY FAMILY OWNS THIS" gives ownership to the gate to your whole family, if a new player gets born to your family, he/she will automatically have access to the gate.
"MY FAMILY OWNS THIS" should only apply if the original owner decides to make it public since i can see that be easily griefed

As I interpret it the game is about having experiences.
I need to kind of disagree here, since the game is about contributing your part to rebuild civilization and having diverse experiences within each life (or at least thats what i understand by "A multiplayer survival game of parenting and civilization building") Playing for progressing the civilization should not be "playing the game wrong"
And i do have the same concerns that the op has, since the game feels almost the same on every town no matter how advanced or primitive it is on a gameplay or civilization perspective, it should be taken in account that the tech tree is very lacking for the time being, i do hope that when jason is done with the fixes (which might take a month to do ((hopefully..)) to reach a more clean state where we can start going forward again. (Give me more uses for oil, goddamit!)

All in all Jason works hard to make the best game and he listens to feedback (reasonable feedback) to improve his game and fix issues that come along with every game changing update.
Making the best game is impossible since there will never be a "best game ever" and honestly it doesnt fit what jason tries to accomplish here.
Jason doesnt take feedback in general unless he is totally clueless on how to fix a problem. If he truly cared for feedback we would be on a better state right now (with rift included, because it CAN work, but it was implemented horribly as every new gimmick that jason adds)
It doesnt help that most of the time the fixes to these types of updates are made via trial and error which makes things more frustating for the players. (going on vacation while leaving an unfinished balanced game-changing update live is not a smart decision to make; he should have reverted the changes from the start of the vacation)
to further flesh out the idea, as scarcity starts to creep up, there will be pressure for peaceful and cooperative interactions like trade. No wild milkweed left? Then a milkweed farm becomes very valuable. You're not just going to give your hard-earned milkweed away to some other village. But if they bring you a cart full of iron, maybe you can work something out. This is interesting. There's "time for it," because there's no other way. There's no milkweed left.
Even if resources were super low trade wouldnt take place because is not encouraged. It is far easier to just break your way in to a village and raid the whole thing to bring the sweet loot to your family.
Trade is high-risk and low-reward and it isnt consistent since the moral profile of every town changes per generation. So if in a world where the first to growl wins why would you risk going to a village with your cart of goodies to try make a deal when you could be shot or stabbed in a single click? (plus shift)
Going back to a different broken state that players complained about for 15 months isn't exactly a "positive change."
In this case it is a positive change, the actual state of the game with the rift is not enjoyable with the current size and the available griefing that can be done within the rift.
I do know that you said you are currently "working on that" but the more time you take to do that the longer the playerbase is tanking this whole experience which is bad in the long run, just watch what happened to tarr or morti.
The rift was A BIG CHANGE that was made without not vision whatsoever, so there was a lot of stuff that wasnt taken into acount (like how there can only be 3 nosajs in the map making manual apocalypse impossible or the high numbers on bear caves or the lack of feathers in the map) making it the hell cage that everyone has been complaining about.
I am pretty confident that if you made a poll asking what was better the vast majority would say that pre-rift was better. Not because it was a bad concept or a bad design but because it was a poor implementation and execution of it.
I am not saying that you were lazy or just cheap on just putting invisible walls on it, but all that i try to say is that you cant just make these big changes without taking in consideration how many mechanics will be broken because of it. (Taking a vacation in the middle of the development on the rift was a terrible idea, i am not saying that you shouldnt take vacations but that you should have reverted these changes until you were back from it)
I believe that the rift itself was a good idea, its just that it was implemented badly and now most of the playerbase has a horrible impression of it because of this behavior.
Seems like it was a store room from a town and they just waited until everyone was dead to put stuff in and lock it out.
It amazes me how jason hasnt done anything with this issue, the total awarness that it can give you it too much to even call it "somewhat fair" hopefully he does something about it soon since we are now trapped in a cage with them
You have the tools to protect an diesel mine shaft and "lock" it yourself, correct?
These tools are unreliable, you never know where a key will end up once you give it to someone else and can be used to lock valuables items from anyone else like in at least the last arc. And with fences you run the constant risk of a griefer eventually gaining access to it to grief it anyway.
What is exactly your thought process to use these tools correctly?
We are still pretty much on the stone age, having oil and steel tolls and call it another type of age is just a lie when gameplay doesnt really changes for anyone involved, no matter how advanced is your town you are still bounded to use branches to extract wheat, use straight branches to transport fire around and limited to only use steel for tools while making the same chores as any other town in the map.
It doesnt matter if the lore says that these people are from the future, if you dont follow a certain order (stone age, bronze age, iron age) you will end up with a mess of a tech tree with "futuristic" additions that add too little to the game due to their lack of practical use on the current age when you could spent more time on developing further the state of civilizations.
I totally agree with this, i watched the trailer yesterday while waiting to recover some tokens to play and it totally felt like a different game
Now that we have a limited world (rift) and limited towns (property fences) AND the constant threats of raids we should have more tools to organizate ourselves instead of just running around doing our own thing until the town silently runs out of any resources.
What if we had a bell that instead of calling everyone on the map just calls your family to a single spot? in that way families could have their own meetings to discuss certain events (raiders approaching? water running low? non-related family in town?) or make choices on how to improve the town.

I think it would be pretty cool to make the the map a big island if it is that we are going trought the whole box idea, i think there would be a lot of potential for more technological development and could make towns that are on the border more unique or more focused on a single industry (the fish and sea exploration industry)
It is true that it would be a pain on the butt to make this actual happen, jason himself has said several times that it would take a long time to code it into the game but i believe it would be worth the wait *in my opinion*

Yeah, the existing rift is just place-holder to test the idea. It might be water or something in the future.
And there might be ways to cross it in the future.
It would be neat if it was an ocean that can be only crossed with boats with the promise of small islands rich in resources.
I believe it would feel like the space race.... but with water.

when jason first introduced polls i was quite happy to see he was willing to take (or atleast listen to) player feedback in a more organized way but seems i was wrong.

Unfortunately I don't think so as of last I heard.
Makes me wonder what would happen if an official port to pc were to came out...
