I don't think more content is the answer. At least, not in a linear fashion of just chucking more stuff on the top of the tech tree. Your core experience thread has some good ideas, so I won't repeat what's been said there, but overall I think it needs a little more variety somehow.

#177 Re: Main Forum » Re: improved lineage ban; bring back bad mother code? » 2018-06-19 01:19:22

I'm curious about this change, Jason. I thought the main intent of the lineage lockout was to reduce baby abandonment/suicide. This change brings that back to the table.

#178 Re: Main Forum » Threads on NeoGaf and Resetera forums » 2018-06-19 00:14:34

Well, after reading about NeoGaf on Wikipedia, I think I'll avoid anything to do with that steaming pile of shit, but I might sign up for ResetEra.

#179 Re: Main Forum » How about having patch notes in game? » 2018-06-19 00:04:41

To be honest, it should just link straight to OneTech on the versions page whenever it updates.

I found this game by quite the fluke. I was sort of in between games and looking for my next hit. I backed the System Shock remaster on kickstarter all those years ago, and there was that massive shitstorm about "oh no, we've run out of money and gone completely off the rails from the initial vision!" and I was looking for an update about that. I checked out Rock, Paper, Shotgun and was scrolling down through some articles and saw a screenshot of OHOL. I actually literally scrolled past it. Then scrolled back up and thought, "hmm, I might check it out." I went to Twitch to see if anyone was playing it. It was freaking launch day. How serrendipitous is that? I found one guy streaming it. I watched it. I decided right then that I would buy it and I've been in love with it ever since.

Sorry, a bit off topic but I've always wanted to share that story.

#181 Re: Main Forum » What's missing from the CORE experience? » 2018-06-18 23:45:07

I once had a bit of a brain dump about what I thought were the problems with the game. It's probably somewhat out of date, but if you're curious/desperate/inundated with spare time: click

Some reasonably fundamental/large scale changes that I think would improve the game:

Trade
At the moment it doesn't exist because it isn't necessary. Every village has the same opportunites. I think there should be a few major industries that can't exist in the same place, most probably because they rely on resources spawned in biomes that do not exist within proximity of each other. At the moment it's pretty easy to find a nice intersection between all the biomes. If there were some biomes that could not exist close enough to each other, then there would be need for trade. I have a couple of ideas for how I think this could work. I'll detail them elsewhere. Click

Industries
This is really just a corollary of trade. At the moment, all tech is the same everywhere. It would add a lot of variety if there was a distinct industry associated with the village that you're born into. "Oh, I'm in a coal mining town this time. Cool, I haven't gone coal mining for a while." Someone tells you the farming village is northwest, the iron mining village is east, etc.

Nations
This would probably be the biggest change, but it's one I want to experiment with as a mod at some point. It's probably completely against the overall vision of your game, but I'm throwing it in here for discussion and to generate ideas. People always bring up the topic of war and it's always noted that there is no such concept without a sense of loyalty/belonging to/owning a small portion of the world. My idea is to choose a nation before being born and you are only born to people within that nation. The Eve distributions are started at some distance from each other, but as the spirals grow, they will eventually overlap, leading to conflict.

Fatherhood
This is a recurring one. I've already done it, so I know it can be done fairly easily.

Low tech anti griefing measures
This is my crusade. Again, I've already done this and I know it can be very easily implemented. Low tech, easily accessible measures for incapacitating individuals, requiring multple people to utilise. Griefing is one of the most fundamental problems driving people away from this game.

Lower food consumption when standing still
This one's not really a huge change, but it would definitely help with communication. If you didn't have to worry so much about starving to death while talking to someone, players would be a lot more capable of teaching others, which would help immensely with fostering co-operation and easing the learning curve.

There is some truth in that. When the game was booming, there was a huge influx of noobs and wankers. Noobs are okay, but it got tiring teaching everyone, and wankers are just wankers. The current player base is nice and comfy.

I'm not active on any kind of social media or forum apart from this forum and the discord for this game, so I can only preach to the choir. I might go and check out those other forum sites though, and see what they're about.

#183 Re: Main Forum » Fathers? » 2018-06-18 20:50:56

I made the mod as an answer to the problem of males being unnecessary. It's not uncommon for players to kill their male babies because of this. I wanted to make an incentive for keeping at least some males around.

The current birth mechanic is nice in that it avoids all issues to do with sex, consent, rape, incest, etc. It's very simple and pure. I wanted to introduce a need for males while disrupting this purity as little as possible. That's why I didn't include any kind of consent or action involved, I just used proximity, up to a minimum distance. Within that distance it makes no difference how close you are.

I then added an Adam spawn since if an Eve spawns in the wilderness and the nearest adult male is nowhere nearby, she won't have any babies, and the server would end up being populated entirely by solo Eves. Then after that I updated the lineage system to track mother and father and calculate relationships from that. In the case of being related to someone through both mother and father, it takes the closest relationship. So yes, incest is a thing, but it isn't portrayed anywhere and doesn't affect anything. If your father is also your uncle, you will just see him as your father, so you would need to ask people how they are related to other people to be able to work out where the incestuous relationship took place.

#184 Re: Main Forum » Fathers? » 2018-06-18 03:39:17

Mums and dads. It changes the check for an eligible mother to take into account the proximity to an adult male. If there are none around, you have very little chance of having a baby. If there is a guy around, he will be correctly identied as "YOUR FATHER" and all family relationships are traced through mother and father.

Every Eve gets an Adam so that she can have a family.

#185 Re: Main Forum » Fathers? » 2018-06-18 03:34:39

I have made a mod that adds fatherhood to the game, but it isn't hosted anywhere yet. It can be though.

#186 Re: Main Forum » Drawing Contest » 2018-06-17 09:57:58

After a bit more thought, my first draft of a coracle recipe would be about a dozen cut saplings woven together and tied with rope to form the frame, then a bear skin or maybe two to form the skin of it, then an oar fashioned out of a straight shaft and a worked wooden plank.

But really, I'm just looking for any kind of boat to start with, just to show what the mod can do.

#187 Re: Main Forum » Drawing Contest » 2018-06-17 00:58:15

Awesome, thanks!

Some more context: I've made a water mod that introduces a water biome, streams and a new object property of being able to be placed on water or not. Objects can be rideable and go on water, i.e. boats. I made a quick recipe for a raft made out of straight shafts, but the problem I have is a visual one. When a player is riding something, the legs are not rendered. The idea is that the player is meant to be inside something. It's kind of a shortcut since legs change length etc. as the player ages, so it's just easier to not draw the legs.

So my raft, which was supposed to be stood on, looks totally wrong now. So a coracle would make more sense as it's something you sit inside of.

A coracle is basically a round boat made of wicker or short branches as a frame and then covered with something water tight on the outside. Animal hide is the most common. Then it is propelled with an oar.

So ill leave it up to you guys to draw what you think looks best and then I'll use it to showcase my mod.

Thanks in advance!

Can someone draw me a coracle?

#191 Re: Main Forum » More murder problem discussion » 2018-06-14 20:33:10

I keep saying it and I'll keep saying it. The only advantage that good players have is teamwork. We need ways to stop griefers that require teamwork.

#192 Re: Main Forum » Getting map data out of recordedGame files » 2018-06-14 04:46:05

Bear in mind that every recorded game will start at 0,0 so you won't easily be able to combine map information from different game recordings.

#193 Re: Main Forum » Let's make a OHOL drinking game! » 2018-06-14 04:12:52

#57 there is a new forum thread complaining about griefing

#194 Re: Main Forum » More murder problem discussion » 2018-06-13 21:10:07

You can't solve griefing one on one. By definition. Because anything available to the hermit is available to the griefer. This isn't a game meant to be played solo anyway, so why would you consider that important? The only advantage that good players have over grifers, just as the only advantage that good citizens have over criminals, is numbers. This is the ONLY thing that can be exploited to the advantage of the good players.

#195 Re: Main Forum » More murder problem discussion » 2018-06-13 20:55:04

It can be lethal, but doesn't have to be. One person smacks someone else with a stone and nothing happens. But if two people do it, then that person is incapacitated for a short time and drops what they're holding. Voila, griefer subdued. THEN, they can either kill them with a weapon (probbaly the one they dropped, if they had one) or let them recover, or keep bashing them with a stone to keep them down until they starve, or give them time to talk and argue their innocence or whatever.

#196 Re: Main Forum » More murder problem discussion » 2018-06-13 20:48:36

Please, please, please, Jason, please implement something that requires MORE THAN ONE PERSON to non-lethally disarm a griefer. I've suggested this for months, I've done it myself: https://github.com/UncleGus/OneLife.git (restrain branch) and it works. PLEASE try it.

#198 Re: Main Forum » Bye all - griefers won » 2018-06-13 03:59:14

I don't think anything should carry over into another life. Even the lineage ban is a necessariy evil in my eyes. I think griefing needs to be handled within the context of a lifetime. My proposal that I voiced months ago was to be able to use simple items to incapacitate an individual, but only in such a way that it takes more than one person to do it. This way the majority (good players) has the advantage of numbers over the griefers, who predominantly work alone.

Well, I've since gone and coded this myself, and it works a treat. If one player hits another player with a stone, nothing happens. But if a different player then hits them within a set timeframe, that player can't move, can't eat, can't use items for the same amount of time. And once they are incapacitated, it only takes one person to keep whacking them with a stone to keep them still until they starve, so the good guys can take care of themselves and get rid of the griefer as well.

#199 Re: Main Forum » [PRIVATE SERVERS] A LIST OF CUSTOM SERVERS (SIGN UP YOUR SERVER HERE) » 2018-06-12 22:24:33

I'm not running my modded server any more since the useChance update. I might recycle the content into a new mod at some stage but for now it's not running.

#200 Re: Main Forum » There will be a mobile version of OHOL soon... » 2018-06-12 22:02:59

In the immortal words of Jerold Dwight Ellis III and Garrick Demond Husbands, "I've got five on it." That is to say, I would be willing to pay five American dollars for the mobile app.
