The current state of OHOL

Here's a bit of my Story:

I've started OHOL back in August 2018(before it even came out on steam) and instantly fell in love with this game. I took a break from the game during the time of COVID, but in 2024, I saw the game on my desktop and I wondered, how is this game now? I booted it up for the first time in a while I found a fun game to be addicted to again. Building rockets, fishing, learning the new mechanics that I've missed out on. I fell in love with this game once more, and took a small break towards the end of 2024.

Fast forward to May 2025. Summer rolled around and I had too much free time. This time, a person I've met in game asked me to rejoin the discord, so I did. It exposed me to a new side of OHOL which I've never interacted with. It was fresh and entertaining but sadly this play through experience felt different.

This third run through of the game, I've noticed that my presence in both the discord and game was being surveilled. Everyone talked about the website OHOLCurse and tracking accounts which felt odd to me, but I guess that's part of the new meta of gameplay.

Since the end of the Forgive Exploit, I've been reflecting on the current state of the game. The patching of the forgive exploit finally allowed more breathing room to all users since every account could no longer be scraped in real time. The forgive exploit provided a watershed moment in timeline of OHOL in which the OHOL of old no longer exists and brings us what I would like to call NewHOL (There are better names, but I saw this floating on the discord and I like it).

I haven't realized until recently, but NewHOL is not OHOL. They've coated the new methods of tracking accounts with a fresh coat of cheep paint, but over these last couple of months, the paint has been chipping away. OHOL is no longer a the community driven game that it once was. It is now a curated gaming experience and we have to live with that.

Maybe it changes, maybe it doesn't who really knows. We will see in 10 years when we see who ends up running the game...

Hi!
Yes, the days of every life being a new life are long gone. I believe this is more of an issue with the smaller community size. There used to be 100s of players spreadout on multiple servers so it was a lot harder to run into the same players you wronged. But, everything together? 5 year curses, OHOLCURSE, phex chat, more knowledagble players, smaller community, and leadership mechanics. You don't get the same anonymous playstyle anymore and half the time you've already been born to the same mom player dozens of times. As a new player you need to do what the elites tell you or they will soft ban you from the game. The elites do not want conflict, they treat the game as a peaceful farming sim however I do think the real point is more of a society social experiment sim.

Ian, please—just stop. For once in your life, listen to the people around you.
The community is exhausted. We’re genuinely tired of your constant presence, your endless provocations, and the same tired routine you keep repeating. Nobody is impressed, nobody is scared, and nobody finds it clever anymore. We’re simply done.
You seem to believe that throwing around Nazi imagery, slogans, and references is some kind of edgy, hilarious performance art. It isn’t. It’s not subversive, it’s not ironic, it’s not “triggering the libs” in any meaningful way. It’s just sad. Most people see it for exactly what it is: the desperate attention-seeking behavior of someone who has nothing else interesting to offer.
The “I’m just trolling, you’re all mad” defense stopped working years ago. What you’re actually doing is making yourself look like a clown—corny, predictable, and frankly a little pathetic. Every time you type another edgelord comment or post another ironic swastika meme, you’re not owning the room; you’re embarrassing yourself in front of an audience that’s already checked out.
You call yourself a provocateur, but all you’re provoking is second-hand embarrassment and eye-rolls. There’s a difference between being controversial and being terminally online and terminally annoying. You crossed that line a long time ago.
So I’m asking you—calmly, directly, and one last time—for the sake of everyone else in this community: please quit the game. Leave. Log off. Find a new hobby. Touch grass. Get a job. Talk to real people. Do literally anything that doesn’t involve continuing to poison the space for everyone who actually wants to enjoy it.
We don’t want you here. Not because you’re “scary” or “dangerous,” but because you’re exhausting, you’re boring, and you’ve worn out your welcome a hundred times over.
This isn’t a challenge. This isn’t bait. This is a request: go away.

You're very right. I should have quit OHOL a long long time ago. I've done pretty much everything the game can offer, griefing is just the same thing 100s of times over and its generally not that fun anyways. Heck, I should have quit OHOL once the Rift ended and I was apologizing for the Green Hat society stuff in like 2019 or 2020 lol. It is clearly an addiction. Do you have any suggestions for a game to scratch a similar multiplayer niche? Or a game that is low effort enough to listen to music to in the background?
