How to deal with decay

I thought, I would make a topic where we could collect suggestions how to deal with the current state of decay. These are NOT suggestions how to make it better programming wise, that's another topic. I want to hear your tipps how to play best right now.

As an Eve or a close relative of an Eve:
I'd say, decay affects Eves the least, since most of the stuff will last at least half her life. I'd say, play as usual, but also have a big value on making things that do not decay at all or can be maintained, like:
- Milkweed Farms
- Berry Farms
- Water Pouches
- Adobe Oven, Kiln, Forge
- Clay Bowls and plates
- Tools that decay with use rather than time
- Storage boxes and sledges with only a few carts for easy transport

Don't bother with clothes or backpacks, only if you have an abundance of fur. You should always prioritize pouches over everything else, because they last forever (if they are not lost, that is). If your civilization dies out, make sure to take everything out of baskets and place it on the ground. Leave the soil tilled and seeded - but not watered!! That way, the next people finding the place will have the best starting boost.

As a child in a civilization:
One of your tasks should always be maintanance. Like digging a pit and expose of trash like broken baskets and whatnot. If you have no shovel, make one or transport everything by hand out of town. As soon as you can look for yourself, go make one or two new baskets. Renew after your hair gets grey. If you want to build houses, use stone rather than adobe. Have a smith in your village who renews tools, especially hoes. Try to make and maintain a sheep farm and a berry farm for compost. Bake pies and store them in boxes or sledges. Make horse-drawn-carts if you can, since the do not decay and are super useful! And don't ring the bell unless you are dying out.

Do you have something to add or correct? I would like to hear your strategies of survival. smile

Re: How to deal with decay

its still worth crafting clothes just decays, but you use less food. seal jackets or nothing, 4 furs are too much for chest, reed skirt doesnt decay? so skirt instead of loin cloth, if not much furs
dont make clothes for others, leave as fur, they can decide if they want and timer goes later
also this helps on filtering nabs in clothes, farmers dont need backpack, scouts do

explore swamp cut all reed, make baskets, when regrows, again, everything
pick out all branches and use sharp stone to make it short shaft/curved shaft, bring to forge  with basket
yew cannot be carried this way
first burn the curved ones, short ones need for tools, also straight ones need fr tool/fence
cut out swamp trees and pine only!

setup milkweed further away near soil and water, pick all out, 15 planted takes enough time you can harvest right after
plant berry bushes for each kid, or dont make kids
give them something to identify, skirt, half shoe one leg or another, this way you know who died
make outposts with some carrot, leave it dry when not needed

place wells further, track number of uses or dont use them, use cisterns, one near farm one between ponds, place a fence 2 tiles away, this allows waterboys get a cart of water, same near farm, one tile from farm cistern, fence two tile away, empty space, cart, horse on fence

sheep pen with diagonal entrance and filled thrash pit
setup as soon as you got tools, can be small, but 3x3 recommended, extend the pen one direction then use shovel to take out fences

keep knifes hidden but give someone who you trust, put in backpack as last item

i been fixing a sheep pen and naked bitch stab me today, near sheep, maybe wanted stab sheep, dunno but either was bad, was the last escaped sheep and i made most work there, my daughter starved near me, fricking jelous idiots
if you wanna kill people, kill nakeds, nobody miss them, if you kill a fully clothed person, you kill its project, which would make the city more liveable

help forger, one can use kiln to make 6 bowls/plates, or more, and seal before goes off, this gives charcoal
if you got enough flatstones, one can place iron on it, other hit with hammer, third take it off, this way you use fire better
need extra hoes , axes and adze, shovel, try forge at least two each

dunno if shears are fixed, and if wool clothing decays or not, if its fixed then wool is superior
try to make one thing in mass production rather running around doing everything

once tools are made prepare for getting a horse, make a single fence, then start sheep pen.
later place single fences to other biomes edge, should be easy to see, near something, like more soil, edge of iron biome, etc, this makes scav runs much easier, keep empty cart/ cart with bowls/ cart with baskets near the fence where the horse goes, also some food, this way, is faster to load/unload. 8 fences placed this way extends town range, also helps not to get lost or eves wandering in, which can be bad too

as baby/kid stay longer in fire, two minutes, ask questions
as adult, preferably not the moms, tell where thigns are: water, emergency wild food, wood, iron, bunnies

assign task to occupy them, this makes them less prone to get bored and kill you
tell babies if unwanted, "sorry no food", they wont grief you next life, keep fertile females count on 2-3 and tell guys to go explore, leave marks

Be wary, things in baskets that decay are destroyed, this includes pouches afaik. Clothes are super important for keeping down food needs long term.

Re: How to deal with decay

Fences near patches of ponds are KEY. Having Men to send out with the carts to grab tons and tons of
maple branches also is super super strong strat (men have no babies so no worries about slow walking
horse cart home.

MOST forge tools don't need string just irons and maple branches, if your black smith has ingredients
and a little fuel and room to work it is EASY to make tools en mass. Having Men to forage makes your
forage game MUCH stronger, don't be one of those retards who kills all the Men and ends up griefing their
babies..

Horse cart is NOT good to use with baskets as the time it takes to bring stuff in and out of lvled storage
is long enough for horse to bolt on you slowing you down a ton. It is better to just bring home 4 items,
like irons and trees and rocks etc.

You are gonna need a lot of tilling equipment, cut skewers when you see em, they don't decay with time
and they reswawn on a timer. Pick all branches you can and leave em by the tree if you don't need em,
they don't rot and they regrow only if picked.

Domestic berries do NOT rot while wild ones do, pick your domestic bushes and then water them so they
start to regrow right away. This will also save you from having new peeps pick em and not water them.

With the decaying baskets killing your pouches you want to probably invest in some cisterns near your
farms so you can dump off water and go fetch more. If you use horse to rock hunt you can make them
really fast, especially if you have backpacks to hold some pies etc.

Mutton is super food, you get 4 muttons from one bowl of berry+carror just have to feed babi sheps. I
don't know if you can shear em before you kill em? would be cool to double dip big_smile!

Also Babies are fucking FAM people don't dump on people for trying to log in and JOIN YOUR TEAM one
dude did a great post on that https://onehouronelife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=1287

Once you know what you are up to and you have a few other people working on your side decay isn't so
bad. If you talk with your babies about what you are trying to do etc. what you need they can be more
useful when adults. If you only have one babi and you are gonna babysit it anyways pick it up take it on
a tour, show it the water the farm the bakery the forge. Ask it questions based on what you need "Can
you sew?" "Can you Hunt? "You know how to farm?" "We need smith can you do that?" If they don't know
how to do shit teach em to farm, bout the seeds. When you build a bond with people they link up with
you, both your times are likely to be more enjoyable and it is ok to do this on purpose <3.

As the Mom it is your job to know more about your camp than your kids do, you need to know what you
need in order to lead them. You have to give your kids jobs, don't just tell them "You farm" ask them
"will you be farmer?".  Try to make it so they have tools for their job, help em get rolling. Some of your
kids will be repeats and have something in mind, you gotta be able to roll with that too the Mom isn't
the boss you are just marshaling the new people into your group, repeats know the camp/group already.

Don't leave people out into the cold if you want someone to be on your side help them out, we are building
tribes and clans here... not just farms and forges.

Re: How to deal with decay

Yes, decaying basket spit out items, but only, if there is room around it, as far as I noticed. So yeah, don't store things in baskets, they might dissapear on you.
I like the suggestion with the domestic berries. You really need someone, who maintains the berry farm once in his life. Like harvest a bunch of berry bowls, harvest the rest in baskets, so that your people can eat them, and water them all. Repeat next generation.
