It's for digging up the bush. Note: If you stake a bush you aren't going to grow any berries on it until the stakes have been removed.

Onetech doesn't show that you can use shovel on it. Is it incomplete?

The reason people put stakes is that the gooseberry bush does not decay if you need soil

its just for keeping safe until you get soil for it
now is same as carrot , and cant even get soil back with worms, so berry is for sheep food and compost, you cant really feed people with it long term

I'm glad you asked that question!
I kept watering the bushes and waiting for some kind of signal from the berry goddess to remove the stakes. I had thought you had to stake a failing bush, water it, then unstake it when it was healthier. Literally did this a few times... Nothing happened... I mean, the water went away. People around me didn't really explain much, too busy running around.
