How long will we keep using stones and stick for everything?

As well as clay bowls to store everything.

We already have this with the flint chip - knife relation.

One of the major reason why is; all these basic multipurpose items will eventually dissapear and get stolen. In a kitchen the lead cook will have to selfishly hide those tools least they get stolen or converted into something else that's unusable, The smith will laways groan when his flat rock is used for egg cooking or roadbuilding as well. And no, the solution isn't fencing.
It's better workspace tools that could be used to fate tech advancement and have all subsequent higher tech built off of those instead of sticks and stones.

A mortar and pestle could easily replace the round stone in the kitchen. A meat grinder or any kind of blender as well.
Flour could perhaps just require a millstone instead to be processed in large quantities.
A frying pan to use for cooking instead of a flat rock. (a stove should eventualyl replace the oven as well) An anvil to smith on instead of flat stones. Generally any item specialised for a location that has only use in that branch of development, and if it works as a gating mechanism for higher end tech, even better.

We also have glass that can be made into bottles, we could store liquids like vinegar and ketchup in bottles instead instead of the bowls. Maybe capacity should be 4 to increase desire to use it. So there can also be storage alternatives tha tare way better (sacks for seeds, sand and flour)

Will we be forever using clay bowls, round stones, sharp stones while building robots?

Re: How long will we keep using stones and stick for everything?

There is little motivation for having redundancy in the game, because people will simply go for the easiest thing. I suppose a good way to motivate higher tech is to have lower tech spoil like baskets do, and have higher tech be permanent. Basically clay bowls and plates could crumble after a few hours, while some porcelain alternative lasts forever. Another thing which I suggested is adding hunger costs or time costs to using primitive tools, to incentivize the use of specialized higher tier tools.

I agree with everything here. Essentially we'd need this very controversial "From Riches to Rags 2.0" update to smooth out the progression through the ages feel for the game by adding decay and higher tech alternatives to a bunch more objects:

-Clay pottery to porcelain;
-Clay crok to steel cooking pot;
-Round stone to building hammer/mortar and pestle;
-Flat rock to anvil;
-Adobe oven to stove;
-Adobe kiln/forge to stone variants;
-Wooden tongs to metal tongs;
-Wooden buckets to metal buckets;
And so on

Re: How long will we keep using stones and stick for everything?

Here are some simple ideas for implementation:

-make it possible to put up to 6 bowls of flour OR up to 6 bowls of wheat in a stone crock as storage. At the same time make piles of wheat left on the ground decay.

-make it possible to shovel up to 10 poops in to a wooden box, transforming it in to a manure bin. The manure bin would not be able to be moved or made in to a cart.

-add an all wood tool "wooden shovel" for moving poop only (to avoid iron being used up cleaning up poop)

-address the issue where it isn't possible to put some items in to boxes such as bowls of seeds so that those items could be moved and cleaned up more easily.

-add a morter and pestle for grinding 3 wheat at once, using a round stone isn't ideal and is not efficient.

-add a "large clay bowl" for big batches of dough, for pies and bread.

The conversation of efficient storage will laways be present in nay kind of discussion. It really shows how much we need storage, we need clutter free workspaces, we need breathable workspaces, we need better, less cluttery alternatives, we need tools that 'belong' and cannot be taken away to be used by something else.

Yes to everything stated above! There's so much clutter everywhere and it's really stressful. I find myself using whole lives to stack wood, carry of a thousand needles, set up graveyards, evenly distribute bowls and plates etc. Not fun

Perhaps anvil creates "Refined" steel tools. And they have half the chance of deteriorating with each use compared to standard steel tools made with flat rock. Makes sense, hammering steel on a less than perfectly smooth surface sounds like recipe for weaker steel tool.

Just need maybe upront of 3-5? Steel ingots to make one.
But it's saving steel in the long run.

Stoves can be used straight away after lighting and lasts longer since the burn is controlled.

Simple upgrade, stick a steel pipe into a bucket to make watering can, no need to have so many bowls near a field anymore since only fertilizer left now needing bowls

Pestle and mortar seems difficult to justify, I think I'm willing to let sharp stone and clay bow continue as the pestle and mortar

Bigger storage vessels for graisn, flour, beans , sauces would be awesome.

On an unrelated note, IMHO, Jason needs to stop worrying about the garden of Eden scenario we achieve of everything is too "easy" . Humans will create new problems themselves. Look at us now! We have smartphones more powerful than a computer that used to fill an entire room in our pockets and the world has never been more depressed.

If someone wants to not have a garden of Eden, he can just run away from town to be a settler 500 tiles away, the world is huge afterall
I never understood people who want to keep /die Ing so to become an eve. Why not go and make a new settlement for the town.

Probably the novelty of making up your own surname is what makes people wanna eve, not the experience.

Bleh, that's just a lottery crap shoot. If you make it up there in the deep roots, you just have awesome descendents

But yeah, I guess you are right.
Still I have yet to meet a family that habitually travels outward to start new settlements. Sometimes there are towns that start a satellite town but that's about it

Yeah, satellite towns start due the ease of setting it up since hauling resources takes a long while.
If we had better transport, we could travel further with more people with enough rations to sustain the trip.

Carts with tires are not bad though, and probably wise to travel in a small group than alone.
Someday might try this with a bunch of others if i get born in an endgame town.

But i suck at eve-ing and i feel anxious if i mess up around people, just thinking about it makes me feel ...

Oh god i need my panic paperbag *BREATH*
