Yes. With a buffer of 18 instead of the original 12 that the Precious Life update gave us, running out of lives feels closer to the vague threat of donkey town. We're reminded of it regularly, but it never really happens. I think many people feel their lives are still disposable.
It's a difficult number to balance: players can have very mixed reaction to games with permadeath.

I was the last fertile female and 3 babies in a row died in my arms. Same happened with my sisters/aunts. I managed to have 1 child, a girl, and I think she only stayed because she was a new player. I've had multiple other babies die on me in other games. I don't mind it here and there, but when people are just spamming deaths it's a bit disappointing.
At least check and see if the band of people you're born to need you first. Then it's fine to be all "sry" and die IMO.
I mean, I've been Eve exactly once since I started playing again -- creating and passing on a family name that lasts more than a couple generations is all I've ever wanted -- but I don't suicide over and over for it.

You have to pick them up at least once to get your birth cooldown reset. If they don't /die you lose the birth and need to wait until you're off cooldown again.

Some of the time when you get a few in a row it's the same person I think. And some people may come back to the game after a break and not know about the new rules. I haven't seen many more /die babies since the increase to 18.

Yeah, I do plan to ratchet it back down in the future.
I felt like I needed to let the dust settle a little bit first.

Less lives the better imo.

Well, there's a poll about this running right now. We'll see in a few days what people think.

And the results are surprisingly even so far.
