Another One Hourish Review From Steam

"2.9 hrs last two weeks / 2.9 hrs on record (1.4 hrs at review time)"

"You ever play a game and can't figure out what you're supposed to do? Yeah, that was me with this game.
There's just too much to learn, too fast, and it's not really fun to learn, to me at least. I didn't really get past the tutorial or the survive alone challenge, but I also didn't want to have to endure the embarrassment of being a helpless noob, at the mercy of anyone else who this game clicked with better. Also another big issue I had with this game was the controls. I was constantly pressing the wrong mouse button and doing things I didn't mean to do. I'm not really a fan of games that rely entirely on pointing and clicking to move, things might've been easier on me if there was an option to walk with WASD or arrow keys.
In summary, I didn't play much and only had a few gripes.. Give it a shot if you're curious, I suppose, but if my negatives stand out to you or you think they'd bother you, probably best to try your luck somewhere else. "

Re: Another One Hourish Review From Steam

I agree, first games are terrible in OHOL. No wonder why so many people quit after the first game. Tutorial sucks, I would scrap it entirely. Little sight doesn't make it any better. No built in recipe book - people can't experiment on their own (except that ugly thing at the bottom right, I doubt people use it).

What a waste of $20 for these people, wow.

Jason makes the game unplayable for new people
People buy it and quit it after first game
Jason: wow people, what a waste of money.
... xD

This game is really cool, but only if you can do at least basic things, the more you know the more fun it is IMO.

Mobile version of this game has great tutorial and very good recipe book built in-game. I think you should check it, Jason.

Re: Another One Hourish Review From Steam

Honestly yea i would scrap the tutorial and just make it the solo challenge with tips. Most players just want to jump in and experience the game. The tutorial doesn't *efficiently* teach enough to justify it wasting new players time and even taking the wind out of their sails in regards to the game. It would be cool to have a tutorial server for new players where a lot of stuff is dumbed down. Could be fun for testing balancing as well.

You never once made a mistake with the left and right click Slinky?  Also, didn't you once have to learn which button did what?  I don't doubt that you're more skilled that that person at doing things.  And maybe you have a point, but it seems to me you're being kind of harsh unnecessarily.

Anyways, maybe your day will get better for you if things have been bad lately.

I just think it's VERY silly to complain about controls when there is just 2 buttons. It takes a little getting use to but I think that putting it in their steam review is silly.

I redid my interface in part because of this; even with more buttons I still get them confused. In my own experience it is a valid comment.

Re: Another One Hourish Review From Steam

It might be two buttons but it takes hundreds of hours to get good at using them. Knowing how each object reacts with either left or right click. Many things you can right click on the tile to pick it up, some require you to click the object itself. Some things combine into new objects if you right click some dont. Sometimes you can just right click all over the place sometimes you have to alternate between left and right. To get fast you have to have the sequences memorized. No one with less than 3 hours is going to have mastered those elements and i can remember them being frustrating when i started as well.

Keep in mind this person was likely playing without zoom or any mod support.

Re: Another One Hourish Review From Steam

pick up/use your item/interact with  = left click
drop/swap item  = right click.
Containers (baskets, backpacks) can only be picked up with left click while having empty hands.

have I forgotten anything?

Re: Another One Hourish Review From Steam

How about the fact that bowls can be stacked with right click in their first stack but require you to left click every other stack. If you right click a flat stone with a hot *anything* with tongs you pick up the flat rock, ruining your pace. These elements and many others require getting used to.

Re: Another One Hourish Review From Steam

I ended up with three 'verbs' in my keyboard controls

- use/pick up
- drop
- take/cycle in container

I wrote these to try and be a bit more conceptually consistent, e.g. how they work with stacks of bowls. These are mapped onto two buttons in vanilla, and even three doesn't cover things like a backpack with bow on the ground.  Do you want to:

- take the bow?
- pick up the pack?
- takes something out of the pack?

Over time the interface has gained features - you didn't used to be able to pick up stacks of bowls at all, and now you can even work with stacks of bowls on tables. But as it gained power and subtlety, it also lost clarity.
