Maybe not the best imaginable, but, it's something to consider, that this 40x40 meter grid we live on, is, the remnants of any particular stretch of the American landscape, once inhabited by people.
Jason clarified that the game is not on Earth. The world is too big even if he hadn't said so.
Also Morti, and anyone else, like I think we all learned (shovel + well site) = well either from reading update notes, someone who told us, or watching, or something like this. I'd rather imagine a scenario like this. Suppose that some apocalyptic thing hit our real world civilization. We all died quickly, or were so busy with real world things that there wasn't time for any game. By the time people start playing games again, there's no meta knowledge about the game. The game basically has whatever comes along in the default client. Players can understand the English language. But, no one's got any clue about strategy for this game.
Suppose a fair number of people start playing the game. Now, my question consists of, how does such a group of entirely new players do?

Na, I'm sure we'd do as good as we've done...
...but also similarly as bad.
As we have only ever run the real thing, once, and we're doing great for some and horrendous for others.

Are those pictures from after the pump overhaul in May of 2019 Morti?

I know it's something we shouldn't be encouraging, but I liked the times where Jason turned the dial to 11, and things just fell apart in generations.
Those seemed like fruitful lessons; about the game, and us, and our reluctance to buckle at times, but willingness to bend in others.

The time of the 500x500 Arc.
We neglected milkweed, and all died.
Prior to that I was working on ideas for garden layouts... that's how laid back we were ... then you see how pissed I got because of the "ONE HUNDRED NEW CRAFTABLE OBJECTS ADDED EVERY WEEK" screenshot I used to chime in with people complaining.
Ahh, good times.
