Honestly phex is the worst thing to ever happen to this game. All it does is promote elitism, bullying, exclusion, and general cheese mechanics. If you want to play this game normally or without that feature you're at a disadvantage. Most phex user wont even talk to you unless you're using phex. Most town vaults are all run by phex users while any vanilla user is kept on the outside. It promotes a disgusting dynamic. I respect the developers who made it but neither have been show the respect they deserve from the community and their creation has been corrupted by it. Anonymity used to be a beautiful feature of this game, and it doesn't exist due to phex/hetuw. ily whatever, ily shadow, i know you put a lot of love and work into this feature, but seriously consider removing it.

Maybe I just don't play at the wrong times or play enough anymore but I haven't really seen any of the stuff you've talked about? I do sometimes accidentally ignore non-phex users but it's usually because either I'm doing something repetitive or that requires my entire focus or people have been talking so much around me that I don't notice their text bubble because I assume they are talking to other people. Honestly, anonymity is still there unless you're griefing or talking to friends. All I've ever seen phex users doing that puts others at a disadvantage is being able to call others for help saving a town or getting a craving I can't count the number of times I've seen phex users saving towns and it's amazing how fast I can get help getting cravings or fertile people when I ask for help. Phex for me has been an amazing tool I get help tracking griefers, saving my family, getting food, getting race locked items, communicating with other families, being taught recipes, and tons of other stuff, and in return I help others with the same things. Phex kept me from quitting the game because it gave me more of a sense of community and help with the steep learning curve. That's just my take on it though and I'm sure other people feel differently. :)

Honestly i respect that aureolin. But i do challenge you to try to accomplish those elements without it. Even with hetuw with phex disabled or just awbz. Key binding is fair game and zoom is a must tbh. But just cut phex and see what this game truly is without it. If you're brave it you'll work towards what it means to grind the metal of this game. The stuff new players deal with. Except they deal with it without zoom, no coord, internal chat, definite locations, item searches, and just a million things that actually enable you hetuw noobs. I wish they would have dropped you when you all shit on them like the self centered zoomer that you are.

I could live without hetuw and phex but I don't enjoy the game without it hetuw solves the steep learning curve and makes it so the game is what I want in a game that I haven't been able to really find anywhere else. I've played countless lives when the player count was low without phex since there wasn't anyone on with phex and it was fine. Hetuw users aren't noobs we've just found something that improves the game and lets us focus on bigger objectives than searching for items and spending ages trying to find other families. I always try to tell new players about hetuw just like I try to tell them about the discord. Games aren't fun to me if it's an endless grind that feels more like chores so hetuw helps me with that I get to focus on fun tasks (or at least did when towns were larger and fully functioning) like building libraries, becoming a chef, learning to make engines, learning oil, becoming a traveling tattoo artist, trying to beat my yum score, running a winery, being a sheep keeper, making a casino, marrying people, making houses, doing stuff I enjoy rather than repeating the same tasks and living as an eve constantly. In my opinion, the game is the best when we have long lines in well-established towns it enables everyone to live the life they want. People will inevitably take on the needed roles that make sure the town stays functional and others will create things to keep us entertained. Hetuw and phex help us get to those points and ensure we do our best to stay there. Trying to push people to do nothing but grind pushes people away especially new players. If I would have joined and played for a couple of hours in an eve town I probably would have just uninstalled. My first life (at least that I can remember) I was in the incredibly old Red fam when we had the crossroads. The town's needs were well taken care of by others and it gave my mom a chance to teach me to make pickles and feed sheep. I enjoyed that life so much that I came back every life to ensure the town and family stayed safe and that gave me my name Joe Earnest the sheep keeper. Everyone else had taken care of the grinding parts and got us to a point where we really didn't have to grind so I was able to learn at my own pace and stick to what I enjoyed instead of getting frustrated trying to figure out how to do anything with no help because everyone else was busy. Anyway, my point is hetuw and phex enable people to enjoy the game and help towns get further which makes the game more enjoyable for everyone. If you really want to grind that much there are other servers you can connect to and live as an eve but I'm going to continue trying to make the game enjoyable for everyone. You play how you want and I'll play how I want.

Thats probably my main issue with the mods. I do love them and i respect the devs a lot, but we rely on them too much and it serves as a crutch for the vanilla development of this game. We need to fail, there needs to be holes, problems, and deficits. Every time someone artificially backs up the status quo using a mod the fewer reasons jason has to adjust things. Vanilla users are suffering, there is a reason its hell for them. We dont make it easier by bolstering a broken system and making it seem like it works by using artificial means.

Oh please. That's not a problem with the mods. It is a problem being solved by the mods.
How long have we asked Jason to improve the vanilla view distance? Without zoom, this game is unbearable. You can't even see more than a few tiles in either direction. Most buildings are not fully viewable at vanilla zoom. It makes it very challenging to locate what you need in the average village and close to impossible to navigate long distances without getting lost. Can you manage to do it, if you have no other choice? Sure. Is it an enjoyable way for me to play the game? Hell no.
This issue has been reported countless times and ignored every time because the dev likes the way his art looks close up. We could all stop using mods and it would mean nothing to Jason. He doesn't care. He expects us to suffer for his art.
This whole game is designed around the idea that experienced players hard-carry the rest of the player-base. Don't pretend that things would be so much better without mods to fill in these gaps. The gaps have been there for a long, long time and they are going nowhere. This game needs better ways for vanilla players to communicate and learn about the state of the world. You should be able to know how old you are. If you are the last surviving member of your family or the last girl. You should have ways to contact other villages when you run out of important supplies, so an exchange can be coordinated. You should be able to see enough tiles so you don't die to a random pig every time you walk into the swamp. This game could really use a proper map. All of this is already known to Jason. None of it is going to get fixed any time soon.
We have proven over and over that we CAN play this game without mods. Not all veterans use zoom or PHEX or wondible's map or OneTech or any of the other aides that exist beyond the basic client. Like you, some prefer to extra challenge of playing mod-free and pure vanilla. No special help. No "cheating".
But playing like that is a real grind. It is intentionally playing with a handicap. And not everyone wants to play games to suffer and fail. I prefer to enjoy the time I invest in OHOL. I want to experience progress and challenges that can be overcome. Not impossibly long distances and inevitable collapses and the same tired grind over and over.
I want to make burritos, not oil rigs.

I must have played my first 500 hours without even knowing zoom existed. All I can tell is that there is nothing you experience in vanilla than is not improved with a zoom mod, nothing. At the same time, there is basically nothing you can do in zoom you cannot do in vanilla, with enough time. And that's the issue. The mods save time, a lot of it, which is important in a game where you only have one hour to do whatever project you have in mind.
Back in the day, when there were no grids or location stones, I could locate all villages and identify all their needs using only vanilla... but it would take me no less than four hours.
The only other option was to get very good at the game and play several hours at a time, to the point you could locate a lost town buy looking which places had baby rabbits and which ponds had eggs. It was a lot of running around aimlessly and wasting a lot of time (which made you develop a crazy memory and sense of orientation lol). But yeah, everything the mods and wondible map do is basically save time. But the biggest reason I started using zoom was because of griffers. It is hard to know what's going on around town with vanilla. A vet griffer was a pain to deal with, get twins griffers and the town was screwed. With hetuw you can immediatelly zoom out to see who the problem is and get the name without being immediatelly killed by the griffer for trying to stop it. And I know that with enough experience you can tell who the griffer is with a single look, by just noticing the way the sprite moves, but that doesn't to really apply to experienced griffers.
Over time, with the changes Jason implemented, a lot of memorable gameplay has been lost. But the mods are not at fault. Traveling families, secondary towns, being the last female of a town and praying to the gods your next child would be a girl, naming her hope, they are not common nowadays. The game is so repetitive right now even I am missing the war update, and it was horrible. At the end, it is possible, not even hard, to do everything with just vanilla if you have enough experience, but it is a LOT of wasted time that can be better used to interact with the fam.
