Can't get it to run on Linux - help!

I compiled the source (I'm experienced with compiling source code) and the program runs but the display is... borked. Nothing but empty [        ] and upside-down characters.
I tried to get the Windows version running under Wine but that one crashed immediately.

Help!

Update - I reloaded the source and re-compiled. Now it crashes with the same message I get when I try to run the Windows version under Wine:

OK SOME progress: After a reboot I got it to run under Wine. But I cannot log in! It says "login failed". I checked my email and key - they're correct.
