No Father?

Hello, been enjoying what i can out of this sim. Love the concept, but, why aren't their any fathers? it seems like most civs that gets going are mostly women dominate? Its like a curse to be a man? why can't the women and a men have children together to make baby? it would be nice to have both no?

Re: No Father?

I think think the women do it by themselves just to make everything more streamlined. It would be a lot more complicated if all Eve's had to spawn in a pair with an Eve and a man. Also since people around each other all tend to be in the same family, that would be awkward as well.

While the men don't really advance the linage forward, they can work hard and take care of everyone. With the family tree now, you don't have any children of your own, but you can look at it and know you had an impact and helped everyone else survive. You know you did something. So there is still pride in being a man and advancing civilization, even if you can't pop out a baby and name it.

Re: No Father?

I personally wish there was like a wild herb (mandrakes?), that would let's man or old woman have a kid.

Re: No Father?

its a lot better to be a dude and not have to think about procreating tbh. u get a lot more time to start and finish projects (especially as a hunter) without being expected to feed and raise children. i enjoy being a dude 99% of the time (the 1% is when im the last person alive)

Re: No Father?

Yes i can see the benefit. and yes its nice to grow old a man because its "easier"...crying babies...Bah! But too many times i am born a male and left behind to be told "No Males Srry"... only then to be left behind to die. "Maybe i spawn as a girl now so i can actually play?" Would be nice to see some sort of work around allows you to benefit as being either or maybe? like different buffs for sexes?

Re: No Father?

The main thing to remember with this game is its made by a single dude and evolving over time.
In the future He Who Is (Jason) might update for Adams as well as Eves, but for one person that'll take alot of coding

Re: No Father?

How about something simple. Like when you say the phrase "love you wife x" or "love you husband x" it shows on the family tree as a husband and wife. I think it would be interesting. I know i have had a wife in the game. We were co dependent in our tasks and worked well together, raising kids and making pies and cloths. Tending to the milkweed and running gor carrot carts. Was a fun dynamic to the game that jist clicked.

To add to this, what if I as an uncle want to adopt someone?  What if we could pick the kiddo up and say "I adopt you" - that way the game could say your the adoptive father?

I've played games where I've seen people role-play this but it would be really nice if it could be notated a certain way.  I'm not sure how hard that would be to code...

Right now I think the role of a male is kinda not being recognized?  I get the most projects done as a guy for sure... and I tend to learn the most about the tech trees!  This is awesome if the family doesn't discriminate based on gender.

However, many players recently seem to be only keeping girls.  This makes sense from a end goal kind of playstyle... but I don't agree with it.  I feel like it is shortsighted and leaves out the opportunity for all players.  Too many successful women equals more endless grind, and the greater potential for famine.  Males relieve the pressure of work on the females.  In my experience, my sons are very useful!   I feel as if the random spawning mechanic coupled with 'girl only power gamers' kinda kills the coop mood for me.  I have no choice in the matter if I spawn into a "girls only" camp, I can only just run away when I'm old enough...

It seems that esp. new players in the baby pile around the fire keep saying "where's dad?"... "no father?"...

Then again, the inherent question of incest might not be assuaged by an innocent "I adopt you" kind of thing...Maybe.

What are your thoughts?

Oh I love the adopting thing. I wanna be a gay dad with 7 children

Re: No Father?

I think addoption would be no harder to code then the father thing. Its all up to who writes the code.

Re: No Father?

You know, if code was just added so the first male to pick you up and say, "I am your father" or whatever,  got labeled as your father, that would probably be sufficient and make most people happy. Could also make it so when you click on them in the family tree, it also lists their 'children' if you wanted to be really generous.

It doesn't really effect game play at all, it is just a nice thing that people would enjoy.

Well, we asked for the ability for naming kids - and we eventually got it!

So I am hopeful that this can be implemented somehow.  Hopefully soon?

Maybe there should be limiting factors, like I can't adopt my baby sister/brother but I can adopt my abandoned neice/nephew?

I agree!  It's the simple things sometimes.  There are a lot of possibilities of user interaction with this that could really add to the drama of the game.

I love hearing people's stories here.  That's one of the most engaging things about the community... something like legitimatized fatherhood could really spark some dynamic interest, in my opinion.
