ohol is a fun game

theres a lot of threads in this forum about how ohol sucks now b/c of this and that change and that all the newbs suck and they should read all the manuals before proceeding etc etc so this is to get a lil break from that negativity.

heres a list of what makes ohol fun for me:

-roleplay. i love raising children and pouring all my heart and resources into them to be shot later (i mean it! i think being murdered is funny) it feels like a collaborative effort in writing a short backstory for our "characters". i love being adopted by my aunt and calling her mom instead. or helping out my abandoned brothers and building a bond with them. or marrying a dude cos he had one shoe on and i had the other

-positive reinforcement. dying surrounded by your children who all say "ily" is THE BEST. i always tell my kids ily and when it pays off its really the greatest feeling. this is basically my #1 motivation in playing this game. i love helping people out and seeing my civ grow is very fulfilling

-helping new players. i love being able to teach someone new the ropes. whenever i see a new player succeed (even with something small like making a rope or sharp rock) it makes me very happy. helping them live to old age is also a great feeling

feel free to add on with what makes you keep returning to ohol

'Experinced' players are going to get really triggered by the fact that you enjoy roleplaying, lmao.

Na, jk.

I think what i love best is the juxtaposition between being subjected to Jason's weekly game tweaking experiments, while I spent whiff after whiff of life, with total strangers acting like family while we balance our survival skills at breakneck speeds to create not just a functional present, but a functional future for those who've yet to inherit the constructs we leave behind. It's especially thrilling to be the Eve in that role, spending almost half my life just finding the stage to set the future in, but it's no less rewarding being the child of an Eve, or near descendant, and establishing a vital part of a burgeoning establishment.

Pulling out of a downward spiral 5 to 10 generations in is also a lot of fun.

Really, whats not to love about this game?

If it were any harder, I'd love the challenge that much more; were it easier, I might just say a few more words each life to my family, and maybe get to know some of you for the real people you are, but there is plenty of time for that in lives yet to come. In this hour, this life, we have to make every action matter most, for all those who've yet to come.

Oh shush! Life isn’t all about that grind! It’s also about a healthy dose of roleplaying chaos

Personally, I take the view that as long as you put in more than you take, you can do whatever you want. You can easily spend a third to half your life goofing off in game and still contribute more than you take, so people hanging out and chatting isn't a big issue to me.

Re: ohol is a fun game

i played a lot, especially when it came out, like my 3 free days and most of my sleep time on working days for like 3 weeks
it gets a bit repetitive but i love the randomness, the occasional selfless acts, even being the bad guy or dealing with one,  beign the cranky granny who does a lot of stuff, and complains on youngsters, or just doing weird buildings people cant understand at first, making something nice then return there and continue, finding optimal cheap solutions like the thrash pit pen and the game still has potential

Playing OHOL optimally is like cosplaying a cactus: stand still and don't waste the water.

You were all the lights of mine, for the last 3 years. You were the stars in my sky and the planets in my orbit.
It was, and always will be, a pleasure to be one of yours.
Even when I struggle to maintain my own gravity.
