my problem: last 9324790370375 lives as eve/eves only living daughter has led up to all of my kids dying at ages 4-11 and me alone at my farm filled with carrots with no kids at 60
what i do already:
- i tour around the children that seem most helpful and intelligent
- i tell the kids where food is ("go left for food!")
- i warn kids of dangers ("theres a snake to the right. watch out!")
- make most kids baskets and put at least one food in it
- tell the newbs how to do simple things like make sharp stone
- ask if they are good or not before leaving them
why are you all dying? how can i make this childhood experience more survivable for you? what do YOU want from your eve mom as a baby?

Its just lack of basic game mechanics for most players I think (temp running, food consumption planning ahead) I dont think you are doing anything wrong. Think about how many of your children die infront of a carrot basket.

I think those are good things. I got nothing other than always name them.
Even if you don't want them to live you need to name them, so when someone feeds them and they go psycho on you for leaving them to die.. they have a name so you know which blonde guy is the evil one

Get the basic tools going.
As an Eve, keeping all of my kids, alive, I can still manage to get up to basic iron tools.
Know that when you place a child on a balanced temp tile, IF, they stay there then you get about 20 seconds per their pips to go out, gather and come back. I generally only go out for one minute at a time, as I have a, sort of, innate feeling as to what one minute is, but with kids you've given a quick tour already, you can probably make that a minute thirty, or even two minutes.
4 pips = 80 seconds, 00:01:20
5 pips = 100 seconds, 00:01:40
6 pips = 120 seconds, 00:02:00
7 pips = 140 seconds, 00:02:20
Babies are born at age 0 with 4 pips,
The fifth pip comes about a minute into their life.
The sixth comes about 30 seconds after that.
The seventh, and every pip there after comes after about a minute.
The pips do not directly coincide with age, they are staggered by about 30 seconds, from one another, but I use them as general indicator of age.
(from a post I made somewhere else)

I show you all this because it's important that every player know this information, but especially Eve's and mothers that want to be productive. A good, hard working mother, is a sign of a good life for a child; they are inspirational. When I see my mother working, while also keeping me alive by picking me up once every 15 seconds if we are on a grassland, or every minute or two if my temp is balanced and she knows it, it gives *me* the motivation to work hard and stay alive, as well.
If you're working on a farm 2-3 tiles in a desert, you have about 10 seconds per pip.
If you are working on a grassland or swamp without any desert tiles around, you have about 5 seconds per pip.
If you find yourself stopping on a tundra, for any reason, immediately stop when you get 2-3 tiles out of the tundra to give your temp a chance to reset to a warmer temp. Deep tundra, naked, you only have about 2 seconds per pip. Never stop on tundra if you don't have to, and never set off on a long journey from a deep tundra tile.
Build the basic tools near your child, whenever possible. Let them see you make that fire bow drill, stone hatchet, snare and stone hoe. It will instill them with knowledge of it's construction, or at least, some indication of how it was made, but more importantly, perhaps, it will set the tempo for your settlement. Try not to get caught up in words. If a child asks you for a job, as an Eve, try to use as few words as you can, at that stage. "Get rabbits" "Gather carrot seeds" "Get fire going" "Expand the farm". You can then flower things up by saying things like "I want the largest''farm this server''has ever seen." "Bring all the branches''from miles around." "I want a mountain''of fur here,''and a field of skinned''rabbits over here!" You know, things like that can give people that little extra incentive to stick to their work, especially coming from an Eve. And especially from an Eve those childen have seen busting her ass for the last 3 minutes.
Take the time in your first few minutes, and with your first child, to wake up the rabbits, so, ten minutes later they have families. Get those cacti cycling so when the workers are going about their business later in life, they have a reliable place to stop and get food. But, most importantly, make sure your surroundings can support your family x years down the road. Don't go for that nice desert swamp patch if there isn't sufficient food near it, take an extra five minutes with your first child to scout around the grassland, desert, or swamp to find a place with more food within a screen or two's viewing distance. If you can, pull the seeds off carrots and dig them up. Run around for a few seconds with a sharp stone and dig up the burdock, and pull a few seeds from every other milkweed as you pick them.
You are setting a stage for your family to play out their life on and every little sign matters.
It's so easy to stand around on a nice warm tile juggling children like it's meaningful, but we all know it's not as useful as a mother who knows; what temp the tile is that her child has been standing on, the rate that their food meter is dropping, and when to pick them up, all while making tools, building a forge, starting a fire, laying out soil for the carrot farm and just working nonstop while also keeping all children alive.
Set the stage.
Be the kind of player you want your children to be.

Great post Morti!
Few more things to consider:
- Build first farm on border of desert, so I can help there without getting hungry every 5 seconds.
- Do a quick run around village with me when I'm born, so I can SEE where food is, where water is, where soil is, where rabbits are, where carrot seeds are, where reed/clay is. Later, when something crucial is need, I can B-line there safely, even while I'm still very young.
- Basket+carrot.
- Bring milkweed/threads/ropes home. I probably can start getting rabbits, if they are close, but I can't get enough milkweed for snares on my own yet.
- DON'T ask/expect me to water carrots if ponds are 2-3 screens away and I'm just turned 5. Can't carry food while holding bowl, there is nothing to forage and it's cold there. So it's like a death sentence. From what I've seen, asking/expecting it is almost failproof way to end up with a dead kid. Maybe you even have to actively discourage kid from watering if ponds are not super close.

You can still help a lot. I only try to use little food after about 55, so I bring myself basket of berries and stay in warm place. Maybe, if that's a problem, you are underestimating amout of wild food you have to have around to set up a settlement. 8-12 bushes + some other one-time food in closest biome is like absolute minimum for me.

make your marker before picking up first kid even if you change later
build a baby spot, a stone or wood tile, or just a flatstone to signal it
build a door or/and a box with lid to let them have fun
tell babies to touch items so they dance
once mom got us a goose skull and a dead lamb to play with
tour is nice, tel lthem about temperature and moving constantly without stops, and to return same spot
tell about needs, they are listening generally
as for me personally , give me your backpack and kill your other kids

Old ladies are helpful. If you care enough to consider dying for the tribe you probably can probably pull your weight.

With the changes to wells I've been very picky about settlements. I've also been pretty damn unlucky with land generation. Overlapping with a snow biome? No. Only a few ponds? No. Not much reed? No. So massive and so barren or completely tree covered? Moving along. I hate this well change as societies are tied even more tightly to swamps. Before outward expansion was possible once shovels and digging wells became possible. Now camps will be all the more huddled and condensed around whatever few lucky ponds your eve happened to find. As if clutter wasn't getting bad enough with the past few updates.
All morning my eve lives have been making firetools, and explaining how to kids, plus other recipes and mechanics, and then dying and starting over - I've had some nice children to teach in some very fertile greenlands, tons of berries/burdocks, and was able to explain a lot to a receptive few but, most of these teaching sessions end with "and I wish I could've showed you instead of told you". Because too often I've made tools, maybe even a basket for a child, but the only swamp around for miles only has a few reeds and no pond or something. Perhaps no clay. So we eat berries and die.

Which makes me wonder. At which generation you can reach ultra advanced technology of making baskets? You need to have composting cycle running full steam to be able to afford them now. I haven't seen yet a place that could make 10+ baskets from wheat.

Compost is 8 now not 4 so is plenty of production for spare wheat straw <3

True, but it still takes 30 years to make a basket when you need it.

One thing to keep in mind is that the game can take 5-10 seconds to load for some people. So they might not see anything you say or do within that period of time.

Which is a bug and should be fixed. Game already preloads a lot of things at launch, so it's probably a simple update to preload missing/newer stuff.
