DO NOT use squash or potatoes as a starter

i figured this out as an eve, first with potatoes (which require a shovel to harvest) then with squash which requires a few extra steps (i starved to death before i could figure out how to make a crock).

i think i am just gonna go to carrots, because they have never done me wrong. and when a town gets a stable food supply i can start experimenting more but i love the new vegetables and i want to try them all! however atm that is a bit hard considering most everyone is first generation. yikes

Yes, my uncle discovered the same thing with potatoes. I planted some beans in another game though and my son harvested them with a bowl. Looks like you just eat them out of the bowl like popcorn, but I didn't get a chance to try it.

Beans seem like a good choice early on but you'll need a lot of bowls. The crock is made by combining two wet clay bowls, The stew seems good but it takes a lot to make.

Once it's cooked you get a bunch of bowls worth of the stuff and each bowl has two bites.

Re: DO NOT use squash or potatoes as a starter

I was born to a somewhat well developed village and discovered a few things about the new patch. we tried to get the Berry field up and running again. They needed dirt to stop dying then water then stakes and still it asked for more water. We put over eleven water on one bush and still nothing. I tried to read the crafting notes to no avail. Then i found a potato plant and thought well this might be the new good crop. I planted it then it required 1/4 dirt from a bowl. i did this and then another villager tilled the left over 3/4 dirt. Makes me think you could double your dirt somehow. The potato plants grew and produced five or six potatoes which needed a shovel to dig up. These potatoes couldn't be eaten on their own they needed to be cooked in a hot adobe oven. They gave me six square hunger refill each. I then planted some corn hoping it was still a good choice but i died before they grew.

My Eve grew a bunch of purple cabbages.
Then they couldn't be eaten straight (which doesn't make sense because cabbage).
And then we died.

Yeah that's very strange to me, cabbages are the easiest plants to grow and eat. Feels very unintuitive.

I grow cabbages in my garden all the time, that could be made only with hands.

Re: DO NOT use squash or potatoes as a starter

Is the only way to eat squash in the "Three Sisters Stew"?
Can it be boiled on its own into mashed squash?
Or simply baked?

Yeah I'm a gardener. Greens are easy, esp in coldish weather, and cabbage and kale and spinach should be directly edible.

Re: DO NOT use squash or potatoes as a starter

I think this is quite a good idea!

Let's forget about micro- and macroelements, as there is no nutrition in the game, only calories (and it provides odd cases, like a Scotman who survived IRL with taking only microelements and water an entire year!). With cabbage, one should eat 8 kg a day to provide 2000 calories (sustain average adult).

It does mean, the most basic food should have very limited hunger filling capability, like 1. Yet, current minimum is 3 (2+1 from crafting recipies . I would request about limiting this minimum, as currently elders, to not waste food, need to wait until 1 health bar to not waste food. So impractical!
