So you use 2 soil for 60 food. That's basically 30 food per soil, which is worse than everything except green beans. So why bother making potatoes? I mean practically, not for novelty.
Believe you're right, but don't believe you can't be wrong.

If they didn't cost water that could be so great. Nomad life could take new turn, villages living morr in place where there is not much water.

i really think we should be able to cut a burdock into 3 with flint and replant it with sharp stones, takes epoch to be ready, no water or soil.
Well, that's actually not how burdock works as a plant, but the premise works for the game.

1. Make suggestion on reddit
2. Put it in the signature.
3. I will upvote it
You see, I use this procedure with my propositions, it does not hurt. Of course, I also make a little SPAM about them, as I believe many problems discussed on this forum may be helped with my proposition

But potatoes make 60 food for only 1 water. That's more food per unit water than any other crop. And they are portable, more portable food density than any other single-ingredient food.
Also, water is the thing that's really running out, long-term. You can make more soil...

Well, water is infninite (with high number of wells and for low values of infinite ) and makes itself. Making soil is full time job. And stealing shovels, picking up all berries, eating all carrots, cutting all wheat or killing all sheep halts production for at least 1 gen. If you do two of the things from this list, it takes a lifetime to restart composting.

I think that another reason that nobody is using poatoes is that they are too high tier for such simple food. You cannot have them early on (I actually starved the first game when I've tried to use them - I've learnt the hard way that shovel is necessary near the end). You actually can have much more space efficient berry/rabbit pies way earlier. No point in using something much worse space wise (I have only 4 slots in backpack!) and additionally requiring higher tech to make.

Burdock cutted in three, grow for no water. Best suggestion ever, I really want to life off settlements or villages

Ahhh, so that was your reasoning. I suppose that makes sense. I see the portable food density, but I feel like by the time you can reasonably cultivate and use potatoes, you'd already have wheat and pies (and if not, it wouldn't be far off). If potatoes were slightly easier, maybe not requiring a shovel, I could see them working as an easier, but less efficient, replacement for pies. I guess we'll see. If water becomes more scarce, I could see potatoes rising in value; but I still think there's just too many downsides to argue saving one water.

Potatoes also use 5 shovel uses per harvest...

Yeah, the 5 shovel uses is why I wouldn't bother with them. That's a lot of iron used up for the food it gives.... Pies end up just being better for transported food (and stew better for more stationary food). If you didn't need to dig them up, then they'd be far better.

I agree, maybe just have it require a single shovel use, then it can be picked up by hand. The way things currently are with the graves and whatnot, if you wanted to farm potatoes you'd also need to have the smith make shovels full time...

Single shovel use sounds like a good idea. Maybe also allow hoes besides shovel, but then require 5 uses?

Shoveling potatoes seems to not use it up. There is an transition to shovel with potato on crafting recipes without -1 modifier

We do run out of water, but it takes a lot of generations. And I think it is a good compromise, this way we still have to move to another location but can also build houses while we still have water.

cause your nerfs ever fixed anything
you take composting as a sure thing
most colonies without plenty of water never get to the stage of composting
and is easier to make a water run than making a new shovel
after that, potatoes can be a thing
but is no such thing as most portable single sourced portable food
there is only most portable compact, which are pies
now i could imagine that if you introduce wool backpack, i personally fill with potatoes for babies
but making the game harder, you only make 200 of us working harder for the other few thousand people
which is tedious, and not fun at all
high tech stuff should be simple
low tech stuff should be tedious, lot of process steps, so babies are distracted with it while grownups can advance in tech undisturbed and make it easier to make new foodtypes

How to fix plentiful water:
1. Give people new amazing stuff, like entering mines, seas for ships, long distance communication (horns, pigeons, letters), more war options, predators attached to villages, sexual reproduction, karma system. It will drain people from agticulture.
2. Nerf wells
Simple, make game more fun, or more tedious. Wanna bet what will happen?

This.
In larger town water quickly becomes a resource you do run out of. I've had some towns where I ended up making a couple wells and turning more into deep wells because the town was dried out after 10+ generations.
To me pies are just a better option atm because you need wheat for more baskets, composts, etc, and so all that can turn into pies with the mutton you get from sheep as well, which you also need for compost.
Does the shovel not get used by digging up potatoes? I always thought it was, which was another reason against it for me. If it didn't, it wouldn't be a bad option then, but because of how important compost is you'll always have a ton of wheat and mutton that pies benefit from.

Plz jason, stop making us suffer.
I play only hardcore games but OLOH isn't hardcore as you can see, you can do almost everything in one life time, tasks are just tedious, people chilling are considered griefers atm. Obligate peope to work never success well, they will work but have less motivation.
